Dovetail Jig Video • Make this Dovetail Jig...
My 2nd Channel / jonpetersartchannel
For this woodworking project I show you how to make a step stool using dovetail joints, which is a great project to build, if you want to practice your dovetail joinery. I made this step stool to be used in our kitchen, and I’m sure it’s going to get a lot of heavy use over the years. I used an old solid cherry cabinet top that had been hanging around the shop to build this dovetail step stoop. I think the stool looks great made with cherry, but would also look great made of white oak, walnut or even pine, all great woods to use with this project build.
If you make this project, please post it on Instagram and tag me so I can see it.
Thanks for Watching. Jon

All KZbinrs need to watch your videos for how to make a great KZbin video because you are straight to the point, no rambling about this or that, your videos are filmed in the best way, all your directions are concise and clear and you are full of a lot of helpful information to help any kind of artist. Thank you for your channel. I am a canvas artist who is wanting to up my production and that means my framing needs are greater and I just watched your video from 6 years ago. Very helpful! Thanks!

I like how you approach this more as a conversation, how you approached it, and making decisions along the way. That's how many of us work, too. I like the 5 degree taper, but not the overhang. Loved the dovetails. I would have mortised the lateral support into through tenons in the sides and made a central slot in the top to fit a hand vs. two teeny finger holes. The cherry was gorgeous. I think I'll go make a stool. Thanks for the motivation, Jon!

The stool turned out beautiful...especially for such a utility project. Love that you were about to repurpose that cherry. I've not used the combo of sapele and cherry before...I like it!

Beautiful little project and i have to say, some of the reasons I like your videos are... 1. Direct communication, not a lot of fluff. 2. If there's a mistake, you share it for us to learn 3. Part of the enjoyment of building, creating, making is doing it as you think about it in real-world time. Not everything has to be from exact planning. Thanks for all you do.

Looks like a great practice piece. I just watched your jig build as well. I've tried a router jig, but I got too much blowout when using plywood. This method should work fine with plywood. I'll give it a go, I'll use my scroll saw until I get a bandsaw. Why would anyone make dovetails in plywood? Well, why not practice making dovetails when building essential shop furniture? Also I was very surprised that I can get Bloxygen here in Australia, and it's not expensive! I'm definitely going to give it a go. I've had problems with varnish and Danish oil forming a skin. It should also save PVC cement from setting hard in the container! It seems to me it will save me both money and time.

Thank you, Jon! I don't like using a metal router dovetail jig (tried two or three brands), and don't always have the motivation for handsaw and chisel, so I should give your method a try. Isn't woodworking all about dealing with little goofs along the way? As always, a very inspiring session in your shop!

Love seeing a project build! Very nice results. I was curious if you are worried about the top overhang splitting off along the grain direction under foot? I was thinking that some dowels or pegs sunk perpendicular to the grain direction along the face could add some insurance. Also, with some contrasting woods could add a style element.
