I lost everything when I was 42, divorce (no misconduct on my part except that I never could be enough for my wife), job, everything. However I had written a history book and some folks really wanted me to come to their town some 200 miles from where I lived so I would participate in their living history hobby. They recommended me to a District Attorney and he hired me. My second life started, from there and led to a career that gave me a retirement and I had more fun after that than I ever had in my younger years. I never remarried and eventually won back my kids, not through the law but through love. The history book was a niche book and barely paid back my expenses in writing,,,,but it laid the groundwork for me getting a new career.

@Luke Farrugia Yes I agree. He did have luck indeed. But as we often see (but not always) with luck.... -> Luck is when Preparation meets Opportunity. Also, he made part of his luck: He didn't have to travel 200 miles and participate in that event, but he did. He also must have been polished or charismatic enough to be referred to the DA and then get hired. Those things don't just happen at the snap of the fingers.

This is ridiculous. Everything is made by creative people. That’s literally what the word means. products and the packaging of those products are all done by creative people. Engineers , architects, photographers etc. Advertising agencies and public relations firms figure out ways to market those products. So I think when he says creative he means people who make paintings for Art galleries. A moderately successful fine artist who is going to be making couple of million dollars a year if they are productive. So the trick is to treat creativity has the business that it actually is. I’m not even sure what the hell Peterson is talking about. But that negative attitude stops a lot of creative people from actually being successful.

Agree with most of this, except for the part that if you are missing most of the pillars at age 40 you're screwed. Yes it's true, it takes a lifetime to develop really strong pillars, but middle age is often when people get a reality check that the life they've been living up until then is completely wrong for them and they go through (sometimes catastrophic) restructuring. I'm a creative, open person and the "dominance hierarchy" approach doesn't work for me. I've lived in monasteries as an ascetic, a so-called outcast: no friends, family, job, money, career, aspirations, etc. Then flipped it around later and got "all the things" that the dominance hierarchy says you should have. I recently read a Harvard paper on the function of introverted outcasts and they serve as an evolutionary niche that preserves the species when the group-oriented people all follow a similar path and face destruction. We need to stop devaluing people who don't play the game. Yes it's true, some of those people suffer terribly and don't want to. Others choose not to play the game and they're fine the way they are. I question of the hierarchical model is really seeing these people clearly. My uncle was a recluse for 25 years, same low level job, no friends, didn't talk to family, no intimate relationships. No substance abuse problems though. Anyway, he was found dead in his home by a neighbour which was tragic, but his home was filled with self-made art and other projects he never told anyone about. He was a nobody on the dominance hierarchy -- non-existent. But he led a life that was meaningful to him. There are real, modern hermits in the world who don't want anything to do with anything. They might still hold a job and have a basic outward survival structure but that's it.

My uncle was a hermit who never had anyone over to his home. We would see him for Christmas and maybe once more in the year, but that was it. When we visited his home after he died, it was filled with fine art type stuff. He learned how to sculpt, quite well I might add; also did a lot of intricate paintings. There were musical instruments there as well, and none of us knew he could play any music. Why would someone with these talents not showcase them? We can only guess. Maybe they were for his private hermitage only? Maybe he had low self-esteem. Maybe he just didn't care. I think of Tibetan monks who spend days, sometimes weeks making sand mandalas only to brush it away later. Not everything in the world is about productivity and advancing one's position on the hierarchy. I agree with Peterson in a general sense. There are a lot of drop outs who don't live intentional lifestyles, and just sort of devolve to the lowest common denominator. This is true. I just feel that it's worth parsing that out a little bit more clearly if you're going to give what is tantamount to a gospel about reclaiming one's place in the dominance hierarchy. I myself am not a hermit, but have lived a cloistered lifestyle many times in my past. I am also connected to hermits through online communities. Modern hermits are redefined. Many live in cities and maintain basic survival functions, but otherwise cloister themselves in an intentional way. Some are spiritual and devotional. Some just prefer their own company. How does their human value factor into the dominance hierarchy? Sure, they go to work and pay taxes I guess... but they are not exactly advancing the human race, are they? Peterson is a big fan of Jung, and Jung himself said that human archetypes play out over and over throughout all time. Those archetypes include the hermit, the recluse, the outcast, the ascetic, the secret priest(ess). I would love to hear Peterson expound on this a little more. I am not a psychologist so perhaps I am wrong, but I suspect that I am observing a pitfall of psychology here. Modern psychology is utilitarian in that it tries to mend dysfunction so that a person can rejoin the world. Whether it's psychoanalysis, CBT, or other modalities, it all involves discursive analysis of internal narratives through therapeutic discourse. Those narratives get reframed, and then the person joins the world. It's the hero's journey to becoming a warrior, and then they rejoin the world. There is so little attention paid to the story of the pilgrim on a spiritual journey to enlightenment. That's probably because enlightenment gives you absolutely nothing materially, and its finality is abstract. Yet there are individuals who are compelled to take that path. I feel that modern psychology is ill equipped to address this, and it's the reason why I ended up living in monasteries after abandoning "therapy". Western discourse on personal integration doesn't seem to give much attention to spiritual matters because unfortunately it is still too rooted in Enlightenment principles. I may be wrong and welcome disagreement. Peterson's view seems to be about balancing the sovereignty of the individual with the moral duty to society, and for most people that's probably a worthwhile pursuit; but some humans have no meaningful moral duty to society, and not all of them are "antisocial". P.S. I write a lot but I type fast. Plus I find this interesting.

Get a big stupid white board and if there is nobody at home to argue about decor, put it up and start identifying one or three things as goals, or identify what you value to help determine what goals you might enjoy or be valuable to you. Then just start identifying things necessary to accomplish them, starting with small tasks is required. You have an idea what the best version of you would do given any choice. If you can get closer to that on at least some of your choices, you're on a path that will bend more toward success.

I find the ability to make art as a product to also be a valuable thing. I spent days worth of time perfecting a base in a video game (Minecraft), simply for the joy of creating. I'm also an artist who works online and makes OK money doing it as a hobby. I must say that marrying the ability to create just for the joy of it and creating a product that people actually want is an entirely different skill which is extremely valuable.

Extending that analogy, the Balrog’s whip can’t be “feminism” because that's just ONE head of a MANY HEADED dragon of postmodernism. Postmodernism’s attack on the very notion of logic, science, and competence. Its postmodernism's outright attack on Christianity, and to the idea that “being” (despite its inherent suffering) is good, if we live properly. The Balrog’s whip is probably the plot against Western Civilization and humanity. “3rd wave Feminism” is certainly one of this dragon’s many (active) heads, but let’s not confuse correlation with causation

The six pillars 1 Do you have friends, loved ones, an intimate relationship, basically does anyone care about you? 2 How is the relationship with your family? 3 Do you have a job? 4 Are you as educated as you are intelligent? 5 Do you have room for advancement? 6 Do you do anything interesting outside of work? The more “NO”s the more unbalanced or susceptible you are to life’s chaos. Also if you add some destructive behaviour like drugs or alcohol then you could be in real trouble. He notes that this is not depression. If you have a lot of “NO”s plus alcohol you have real troubles. The order of operations is to address the pillars, probably in the order listed. Stop destructive behaviour as soon as you can. Likely by pillar 2 by changing friends. Then consider happiness. You can’t address existential happiness or depression if the state of your 6 pillars is poor.

That Jung story made me cry of relief. I've had a diagnosis only for anxiety for over 15 years and no one, nto one therapist or anyone has questioned it. Now after a year of useless therapy (not angry at the therapist) I've found myself reading and learning everything I've found about HSP, Empath and C-PTSD and the best and most helpful stories have been Jungian and understanding that being an empath is just another term for being stuck mentally as a child. I can now discern between "empathy" which i now regognize just as people pleasing, my ten year career in retail was just fulfilling a persona people seemed to like as well as including a party animal and social butterfly when in reality I'm a bit snappy introvert catperson who just had a shitty childhood with kids for parents. It's empowering after years of wrong turns and deadends not to mention idiotic choices that stemmed from not knowing enough and having that childish ego, to find information that both reflects as well as seems to heal. It's worth pointing out that almost anything can be creative. You don't have to be 'good at' something. For me, walking in nature is creative, because I feel most alive, spontaneous, free. Some of my best thoughts and moments of pure awareness happen when I'm in nature. Creativity is a state of mind that sees good in something, or sees things in a new, refreshing or useful way. Then if you practise having a creative state of mind in one area of your life, it transfers more easily to other areas where you need help (from yourself).

I really don't like to wear self-proclaimed titles, but this one I can relate to. A big issue of being competent and at the bottom of a hierarchy is needing to assert boundaries with people, otherwise you become a tool for people. You may be able to move mountains in your craft, but don't give all the benefits of your efforts away for the sake of acceptance from your peers who don't care. Either turn some benefits inward for your betterment or bargain with your competency, seek promotions and bonuses for your skills, don't do anything for free. It's good to be generous, but don't forget to cash in some favors for your own benefit in exchange

So being given money will never be the answer, but figuring out how to be beneficial to the world around you, so much so that they compensate you-and that means everything to you, if you’re extremely high in openness. ✌🏾 Edit: typo

I'm creative. I started out as a banker and then owned my own franchise insurance branch. I was miserable, felt like I didn't belong, it was difficult to connect with my colleagues. Sure we connected well at work, but the whole time I was living a persona, one that society (for lack of a better description) built for me. I was not forced to do what I do, however growing up in the 80's and 90's, I came out of it as, success was a suit, tie and 9 to 5. But... I was miserable. I had one escape. Hiking and documenting it. Essentially I was a landscape photographer and did not even know it. I was simply doing what I enjoyed and got pretty good at it too. Growing up I was always told how creative I was and it wasn't in the "everyone gets a trophy sense." It was real, it was genuine, and I do know the difference. Lord knows people told me what I wanted to hear when after a few years in finance I began being recruited by other employers. Giving me a false sense of confidence that I was on the right path. I may have been listening to logic, but I was ignoring my heart. My passion is behind a lens and it took me 20 years in the business world to realize it. I found my place after failing not once, not twice, but 4 or 5 times. The thing is, it was there all along. In my free time after work and on lunch, I would create. It was a release from the psychopathic approach that in my opinion greater than 90% of the sales "leaders" I encountered. I "" the word leaders because I have lead teams am a leader in my local network, industry, and community. I can say leadership has advanced over the past 20 years, we are still coming out of the damaging tactics that were formed in business around the 50's and 60's. However in the past 20 years values have shifted in a meaningful way. Take for instance corporations and businesses finally recognizing the importance of emotional intelligence. Not all but of the better companies I have worked for, leaders who recognize the importance of emotional intelligence, like Elon Musk for example, experience a greater level of fulfillment, following, and success. The majority of "leaders" I experienced, had no clue how they were perceived and mostly ruled with an iron fist. Which simply doesn't work these days. These "leaders" had no clue how they were perceived and had no clue on how to identify the strengths and skills of their team. Had they known how to genuinely recognize strengths and weaknesses, I would not have wasted so much time on false promises and may have discovered where I belong a lot sooner. Now that I am a professional photographer, I am working with clients I would have died to have the opportunity to pitch to as a sales person. Byron Scott of the LA Lakers, 5 time Emmy award winner Tracy Smith, and a huge Nickelodean star who crossed over to CBS recently (I sincerely can't remember his name, it was past my time and age group). I can be myself and still be respected. Where as in finance and insurance, I had to take on this old school, very serious, very old soul, persona. And as an optimist it really went against my personality to try to scare people into buying insurance. I am about hope and dreams, not death and dismemberment. That's just part one was identifying my strengths and I cannot blame the "leaders" of my life. I blame my own complacency and closed mindedness. And the kicker is, I thought then I was open minded and I wasn't even close to it. The second part to that is order. To be disciplined doing something you hate, is extremely difficult. To be disciplined doing something you love, is extremely rewarding and helps you perform at your greatest potential. But why? You'd think creative minds would work better as more of a free spirit hippie type, but really applying some of the discipline and order can really benefit you. Order will assist you in saving your willpower. If you are just being pulled left and right, not taking control of your day, it will deplete your daily finite amount of willpower. You will feel lazy and not know why. Automating tasks and organizing your day, always yields greater results with regards to producing content. As such, I have discovered that some of the habits I developed in the banking world, really transmit well and gave me an advantage starting my own photography business. It's a terrifying thing walking away from comfort and a paycheck. To venture out and have the confidence that you can secure enough business throughout the year to survive and provide. If you are reading this and any of it is sounding like you. You have to take a risk. And to reduce that risk you must first identify your strengths, build your confidence and approach it in an orderly, systematic way. I wrote this in hopes of reaching someone who is struggling. To let you know you are not alone. Most of us do not fit in a box and if attempting to do so is making you miserable, you need to break out of the mold. Focus on what you love and try to find a way to make money doing it. The only problem is after your passion becomes a job, you will need a new hobby. Take care J

I know that he discussed the problems alcohol. I wonder what his thoughts are on Marijuana? I have been known to not smoke it for a year at a time, however I feel that the effect on me has been profound. He spoke of antidepressants being positive for some. I more of a holistic guy and found that marijuana was a great stress buffer.... Let me clarify what type of stress. Traffic, my a hole boss yelling at me for his mistakes, and basically all the stress that you could really do without. Instead of lying awake half the night still trying to get out of the flight or fight response triggered by stress. I could smoke a few hits after dinner (better before haha) feel my shoulders instantly relax, turn on a good show and once tired, I'd lay down and fall asleep in minutes. There is another kind of stress that I never felt like smoking when real stuff would occur. A death, a breakup, or anything really bad. I am fortunate to live in California. But I do recognize everyone is different, this just worked for me.

Hey Justin, came across your comment and I must say that there is benefit in trying to do creative work during lunch and after work, and although I cannot admit I'm a professional photographer just yet, but I do admit I am a photographer and found myself being the most creative person in times that allow me. Thank you for your words that enlightened me. Only 22 years old, being wandering around with a camera creating things that have not yet made me any money, I knew that I only need to apply discipline and order into creating things instead of just randomly doing things most of the time. You shine a light on that. Will try to do better from now on and be serious with the creative "work" outside of normal job.

i don't think he meant screwed forever though. he did say antidepressants help and if someone is in that deep, they probably have a severe chemical imbalance that won't let them escape the well they have fallen into. they just continue to exist in a deep dark mental cycle that won't let them figure out how to escape. SOMETHING has to clear the fog. *TLDR: I absolutely believe someone who is screwed CAN save themselves...I've done it myself a few times.. they just have to identify the problems, find ways to fix them and make the necessary sacrifices to get it done. I'm proud of you that you were able to do this for yourself. Not many people can save themselves or even admit they want to be saved. that takes a lot of guts and determination.* Now for the long part (i wont feel bad if you don't read it lol) When he started listing those questions it actually described someone i recently met. he's a neighbor i just HAPPENED randomly to speak to, who just HAPPENED to volunteer himself to help me make some repairs on my farm. i assumed he was being nice, and he really was. but after that first day I realized the guy is a total drunk AND a felon who should NOT be operating heavy machinery. That evening after work was done he called and told me he was going to rewrite his will and leave me his whole estate because his family doesn't care about him anymore. His son hasn't talked to him in years etc. I was NOT excited about this news. He was absolutely out of his mind drunk(didn't even remember the conversation later). This was one of many red flags. My instincts were screaming at me to make this guy GO AWAY. I thanked him for his help, even returned the favor by taking care of his dog when he got himself arrested last week. the thing is, I'm NOT the person you go to when you have problems because I am not going to tolerate your lame excuses. I am NOT the kind of person you go to if you're needy and clingy and require validation and reassurance or like to whine about your problems with no desire to fix them. and i told him that person. I've survived several hells, saved myself and quite frankly don't have time for petty excuses and self destruction. His family absolutely cut him off for good reason. he was mad at another neighbor for "setting him up" and getting him arrested ...i told him no one set him up. HE was drunk. he agreed sheepishly. When he was in jail last week we tried to get in touch with his friends, and every single one of them had an excuse for why they couldnt or wouldn't pay his bail... if they even answered the phone at all (he left his phone with us....along with his wallet, prescription meds(he's diabetic and smoker), credit card, EBT, and all the pin numbers. AND access to his house.) the guy has only known me maybe two weeks tops. and he just threw everything he owned into my lap....... because he literally has no one who cares about him. But after talking to a mutual acquaintance..... she informed me that he's a really nice guy...... he's just an irredeemable drunk and everyone he knows is fed up with him. She went on to say his parents created the mess by favoring his brother. All three are dead now. its just him and his dog. It's pretty sad. he's the kind of guy you read about in the news who is found dead in his home months later. I feel like he's drowning and grasping for anything or anyone, and it just happens to be me and my family this week. unfortunately in the past he has set himself up to be used and thrown away, he's that desperate for someone to care about him. The only good thing about this situation is I have no desire to use anyone. i'm all set in life. And I absolutely intend to be a rock he can cling to in the storm. I'm not heartless. I'm not going anywhere...... but if he lets go (goes back to drinking, driving without a license, picking fights in public etc)..... well... I can't fix that for him. I won't be dragged down with him.

I always have a problem with dominance here. It implies that you have to carve out and defend your territory. What if you approached this with the view that there is no ground to gain. What if you just let people get involved with their meaningless and neurotic battles whilst you just get on with life as a creative finding beauty and meaning with the simple things in life. What if you cease comparing yourself with others and find your own values that give meaning and structure to your life. What if you just don't buy into it. Well maybe you will gain a freedom that those trapped in the hierarchy will never know.

I feel this. I take anti-depressant/anxiety meds, but I know I'm not truly depressed. It's that my situation causes me to feel that way. Being outside/below the dominance hierarchy I thought was fine when I was younger since I never cared about looking cool, or watching sports, or whatever else, but not having a group of people really takes its toll. It also means less opportunities to meet the opposite sex, which has really negatively effected me. Not sure if its a characteristic of being an ENFP, but I also tried to avoid having a typical career working an office job, which ultimately led me to doing menial jobs and being very transient. Partly intentional, partly a symptom of a lack of good pillars. I'm getting closer to 30 now, and still struggle to step forward most days consistently. It's a very cyclical existence.

@phuzz82 I totally agree but to help people understand that mentality you have to go a little deeper, so here's a quick summary: before you can fail you must be willing to take risk which requires you to take action, simply having a dream board and hoping they will materialize does not work. So unfortunately many have brilliant ideas but are too scared to take the risk or come up with a game plan to take action, or lack the resources to start, even when there is willingness to take action. But I would encourage those to still try, since sometimes those needed resources appear miraculously after setting things in motion. After acting there are 2 possible outcomes, success or failure. Some fail even if they prepared, worked hard, followed a game plan because it wasn't the right time for a product or service, ahead of it's time or market is not interested in the technology at the current time. So now, if one fails the importance of learning from the experience to improve or tweek it slightly is one mindset, but getting discouraged and giving up is another mindset. So one must decide which mindset to follow in advance when the time arrives if failure occurs otherwise your efforts will be in vain.

Welcome to the growth mindset!! This is when you see mistakes as essential components for learning. It is also when you decide to define yourself by the wisdom you gain from the mistake instead of by the mistake itself. It's a tought thing to learn, but gets easier when you practice it. We ask ourselves, "what did it learn today?" as opposed to, "what mistake did I make?" Opportunities come and go, but wisdom comes but once.

As a creative and entrepreneur, I agree with what Peterson is saying here. I had holistic injuries and abuse as a child growing up. It took an immense amount of time, energy, and support to heal those wounds, and for the past decade through RADIANCE, have helped countless wounded souls on their journey of healing. Thank you for sharing this.

@George Bush I'm so completely known as an anti small-hat-wearer that it really doesn't matter anymore.😎 But I think in this case, your reply being a year and a half after my original comment was most likely the culprit. But the censorship is really bad. Cheers

It is the first time I hear about this link between high openness and "compulsive creativity"... and the misery you feel if you have this personality traits and are not creating something...

Guys, having a productive intimate relationship with yourself is certainly more important than with any other human... don’t think for a second that you need to be with someone to achieve anything in your life.

Truth.. that's what's irritating about when people hacked my phone cameras and harassed me telling me i "need to get laid" or "go find a girl" and all this dumb shit.. I've been married before and dated around. I'm fine by myself. I just want my health fixed. I do not give a shit about women. I would rather play with myself and read, tbh..

"Are you as educated as you are intelligent?" - damn. That's a deep question. You really can be clever, but not know about much. The best thing is to totally dominate one subject.

"You're being ground down by the world." Yes I know. That's why Im watching. But let me send a message to my highly creative /low status brethren. The issues go deeper, as well as the solutions. Going deep into the mind is key. The way it perceives the world. The way it perceives the self. And the story the inner mind is creating. You are at daily war with your constant fears of the worst case scenarios, held static and imobile even when inspired, by limiting beliefs. Does that ring a bell? The world is not fair, or good enough, or sane, or righteous, but it IS malleable. Malleable to your will. Because you are malleable to your own perception and will and therefore the world around you is as well. What I see holding this type back often is a injured faith in the world. An injury to the self because of the imbalance, illogic, and vanity. But the sooner you can stop expecting anything good to be innate, the sooner you can stop lamenting the broken world, and stop reflecting it with a broken self. The sooner then you can adapt and let go of all pre conceived fantasies about success, ideals, and right and wrong. If you must steal goodness from the world then so be it. Sneak every bit of good thing that is kept from you. Milk the moments you have for the richness that is robbed from you by default. Re-empowering the self to be anything you want and do whatever you want is key. Diversify means don't get caught up in the preconceived idea that you are limited to a certain thing, or certain way, you can change, change now, change later, and do whatever works. The emotional side of this is a big thing as well. The emotions of creative people run deep and without adequate creation time, and isolation from stress in the broken world, these emotions will build up with no outlet. But one crutch is that many times the creative side is the only outlet. To really master the emotional depths and set oneself free from the ocean of pain, one must deal with their emotions in more direct ways. Instead of venting and purging them through creativity and other indirect behaviors it is essential to deal with them head on. Alone, or with a friend, talking it out writing it out. Plotting it out if necessary. But following it through until you are not running from anything anymore but facing every uncomfortable thought head on. Until you have bored of bad thinking and developed the path to resolution. Never accept The present or past as the final chapter. Write "and then" to everything. Because the "and then what" is what sets us free to be in control going forward. What we need is.... More money, no stress, more time, self esteem?, love?, and focus to follow through perhaps. But all of those things are very tangible things that can be manipulated and sculpted by the creative man. Living a double life may be necessity. Being just normal enough to make the money, stay social, stay healthy, so the creative work can be supported and empowered. Whatever it is you reaally want to do. If all else fails just purge your emotions, let go of expectations, and follow your heart. Do what you really want to do and just stay in your truth. Or whatever works for you. Maybe this is all just me rambling about myself here. Lol Take care!
