I was told by a co worker that she had been abused by her 5 brothers while growing up. When they tried to get her to "date" their "friends" she went to her parents and threw a royal screaming fit and demanded all this had to stop. She got a job and left home and stayed with her employer until she graduated high school. She never allowed her family to visit with her abusive family.

As the oldest son in the Duggar cult, Josh was the golden child. The family name and posterity is carried on through his gene pool first. Think King of England... As the mother of a SA victim who was abused by my husband for 1.5 years, I can tell you - it ABSOLUTELY can go on in your house, under your roof, and you never even know. I was never suspected of having knowledge nor of failing to protect my kids. This might be because I am the one that turned him in, I’m the one that got the confession from him, and I beat him in the face with a Dr Pepper can after he confessed (I taped him, we were alone.) The state we lived in was a 2 party consent state when it came to taped recordings, so I then went directly to the state police and they had me make a recorded call in which he admitted it again. When he fled the state, I tricked him into returning and called the police to have him arrested. All of that to say, yes - I handled things differently, but trust me when I say that though I had no idea what was going on, I still fight guilt/anxiety/depression because I didn’t know. Don’t assume the mothers always know. Some of us simply do not and when we find out our instinct is to protect our children above all else.

Think we should all also take a moment to acknowledge the bravery of Bobye , the elder's wife who testified about what Josh told her. She really showed her commitment to the Truth and provided a much finer example of righteous behaviour than her church "leaders", and I believe that the jury was impacted by her testimony. My daughter is a survivor of SA by my second husband. I had to FIGHT to get him convicted, and it was a female judge that finally made him accountable. My daughter has never been the same, but she is better than she was. RAINN, the local resources available for victims in my area, and good therapists saved us.

I’ve seen no evidence that it’s any better or worse with Christians, except that for many there’s a motivation to hide the truth because of how bad behavior might affect “The reputation of Christ”. Now the laws need to be changed so that someone who has these images and is found guilty should be brought up for one count per child/image found. It's bs that he only faces one count knowing that there were so many different children on the videos and images found. I believe that is the law per state law in some cases. When that actor from glee was caught he was liable to pay each victim a certain amount. If the victims are located by law enforcement, the money goes directly to them.

That's why you see people getting charged sometimes with literally hundreds of counts of CP, because each individual video = a count of possession of CP. But in other cases, like with this one, it seems that multiple CSAM videos were discovered and only charged as one count.

I usually don't blame the parents for their kid's crime, especially when their kids are adults. But in this situation, I do blame the parents (Jim Bom and Michele) on some level for Josh's behavior. They knew their son had problems when he was a kid (molesting four sisters and a babysitter is obvious that he had problems) and they did not get him any real help with a real therapist.

If every person that said (or thinks) there should be no statute of limitations on CSAM, and that punishments need to be harsher were to start writing to their elected representatives at the state and federal level, things could begin to change. Posting online or signing petitions is not enough. Legislators are not watching KZbin to see how their constituents feel on topics. They pay attention only when they receive direct communication from those they represent. If you do not know who your state representation is, a browser search will get you to a page that will walk you through how to identify those folks.

I agree that the best thing would be they aren’t taken from their mother, especially the youngest ones. I know working for CPS is hard and stressful so I really do have so much for respect for you. I have family who adopted out of the foster care system. While they got the youngest as a newborn, the oldest was 4 and one of 6. He was separated from all his siblings though one lady did have him and his younger brother at one point. I think the problem with them was they suffered severe malnourishment and neglect to the point that the younger children were eating paint off the walls. The paint had lead in it. So the lead poisoning gave them permanent issues.

I’ve been on a couple different juries, and even when we believed we were at a unanimous decision early on, we felt we needed to be thorough and look through all the evidence before we said we were ready to announce the verdict. This also helps Josh from coming back and saying that the jury didn’t take enough time to think about the evidence when he’s asking for an appeal.

I think this jury took it seriously. The evidence was laid out in a way that was in logical, systematic, and scientific. The defense had a terrible expert who doesn't have the education or experience to do a very good job. The defense tried to cast doubt by blaming others some of who didn't live in the state. Even the command option was blown out of the water because the partition cannot be added remotely. The prosecution provided scientific evidence by people with the education and experience. JB's and the family giving interviews also shot Josh in the foot because he admitted to what he did when he was a kid. JB made things worse by lying and trying to control how the court was run. He thought he could actually tell the judge what to do. He lives in a dream world that is now crashing and burning. His lying exposed himself to his children. It was a gong show. The Prosecution was just better. They were more professional and knew what they were talking about. The defense didn't understand the technology and did a poor job trying to present what they did. They made a bad decision on their expert. No comparison.

You know that doesn’t sound crazy to me because I grew up with a narcissistic father who embraced Bill Gothard teachings. It took me many decades but I broke away, became a LPCC who specializes in trauma. It has taken years for me to heal from the damage. I and another sibling have also become the “enemy” and our family imploded also though I have siblings that still embrace this toxic family dynamic. The teachings about women are extremely damaging. I stayed in an abusive marriage for a long time until I realized that I needed to protect my children and divorce this “Christian” man. When you are taught that if you don’t follow this teachings as a woman you will be out of God’s protective “umbrella” and bad things will happen to you. It took all courage I had to go against it all to protect my children. I think that this cult is very enticing to narcissistic men.

I'd have to say so too, on the narcissism bit. In 1997, in a church I was going to at the time, there was a family in that church who tried to get me to join the IBLP. I thought some of their views were a bit extreme and couldn't see the point of them. Not to mention, I was a single guy at the time, so why would I want to join? Well, that family, given the southern gospel beat of my specials I'd sing in church, I learned that the father of that family was concerned that I would cause his daughters, who were 2, 5, 8, and 9 at the time, to become promiscuous and pregnant. I was like "what the...?" But now that I look back on it, I would not be the least bit surprised if P. H. (his initials -- I won't state his name on here just in case I'm wrong on this) was projecting and had sexually abused his own daughters.
