Just out of curiosity, I tried the glide step they do. It’s not easy, especially with the step count, the length of steps, the pivots. Holy crap that alone demands a ton of mental focus. On top of that, they’re all on the watch for the inevitable moment when one of the visitors breaks decorum or steps where they shouldn’t. Tons of respect for the sentinels

What is it that they do with the rifle at the beginning? When they like check it and spin it around and stuff? What is the significance of that? (Sorry if it's a "dumb" or disrespectful question. I've just learned of this today and I'm super curious and full of questions!! lol)

reality bytes it is a part of the ceremony where the Sgt of the Guard inspects the oncoming guards weapon. If it doesn’t pass they will be sent back to quarters.
@Sonnabend006 жыл бұрын
The chamber is checked to make sure the weapon is unloaded (safety always). The inspection is whats called a "white glove", to ensure the rifle is pristine clean, also checked to make sure there arent any loose pieces. The drill is also to ensure that in honouring the Unknowns, their weapon is as their uniform, perfect, unmarred. To guard the Tomb is the highest of honours, requiring the highest of standards. Notice that the soldiers uniform is inspected minutely, even the tiniest of flaws will be noticed. In their own words "Never will I falter".

@timprescott46343 жыл бұрын
Not dumb or disrespectful in the least. It is simply a VERY detailed inspection of the oncoming Sentinel’s rifle. You’ll notice the outgoing Sentinel does not get his inspected. He simply faces the Guard of Honor and clears his weapon (ensures there isn’t a round chambered, which there NEVER is).
