Like in South America, people can say "American" to include everyone and also have words for people from each country, including people living in the US. We don't have that in the US. We would need to create another word and would be great if it's equal or less syllables lol. Is there a word that you would like to offer that might make sense to use? "United State citizen" actually feels like it excludes a lot of Americans in the US. Not every one is a citizen yet and that doesn't mean they are "less American". Not saying all immigrants are illegal but it takes time to become an actual US citizen. And I don't think you need to be a citizen to be an "American living in the US", you are an "American living in the US" if you live here, regardless of immigration or legal status. I'm not sure why we would need to know someone's race with every use of the word. The US has a lot of different races and cultures, everyone is still an "American living in the US" aka American (in our use of language). If someone wants to explain their race/ethnicity further, they could specify that like you say in your comment
