Joshy's Opinion on Mario Kart 8 Direct

I like Baby Rosalina. I just don't understand the metal Mario and Peach things. It's literally just putting a shader in the place of a texture set. They could have it as an unlockable skin for every character in the game... Hell, they could even go as far as letting you tint the metal with RGB sliders, and it still wouldn't be a big task. Actually planning and implementing the triggers, as well as a skin selection in the menus would be more difficult than actually making the shaders for all the characters. I'm hoping it is just a skin option, and not a whole separate character. That really doesn't make any sense.

Pink Gold Peach was added because Nintendo wanted characters with similar appearances (there pretty much the same person) to have different weight classes

I am really excited for this game. I thought the Mario Kart 8 Nintendo Direct was done very well. Nintendo is really bumping up the production value and having fun, which I greatly appreciate. I guess I seem to be the minority in regards to Pink Gold Peach. I immediately was excited that Peach is getting some attention to combat Mario. I do not see Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach as being a lazy approach to new character additions. In this form they are heavy characters which changes them up enough to feel special. Also with the HD graphics and lighting, they are going to look stunning. Baby Rosalina could be taken as a heavy hint that a new Mario Galaxy game is in the works. I mean seriously, how many games feature Rosalina lately? SM3DW, Mario Golf World Tour and a baby version in MK8? Seems a little fishy and I don't mind the smell! Lol.

I think the Rosalina love is just in response to... well, the Rosalina love from fans. She's an all-time favorite character post Galaxy. I agree with you on Pink Gold Peach. I think it'll be a character that's fun, but I still think it's humorous, especially after the people complaining about Metal Mario. : D

I can maybe agree on Pink Gold Peach seeming lazy, but I actually don't mind her. It seems pretty cool to me, both Mario and Peach having a shiny, metalloid version of themselves. Besides, everybody appears to look down at them and see them as just a different skin, to which you are right, but you can also look at them as seperate characters that have different personalities. I don't recall people complaining about Dry Bowser or Dry Bones, despite being different versions of the original characters. Also, it's your standard Mario and Peach characters, but with different attributes such as weight class, so that's pretty neat and we shouldn't forget that aspect of it. And who knows, maybe there's more to Pink Gold Peach than what we can merely observe from her confirmation. Maybe she's hinting at something. Maybe we'll get a Mario game that makes a return of the metal cap, and so Peach turns into Pink Gold Peach or something :P I mean, it is pretty random and unexpected tbh.. Humans say they like surprises, but in actuality they (unknowingly) don't. They only like surprises they want :D so I guess PG Peach didn't really resonate well for that matter. Oh well ;) Baby Rosalina, similar thing, seems a bit uncreative and quite frankly the obvious thing to do from Nintendo's part, but we need to think of other people that enjoy Mario Kart, not just ourselves, you know -"me, me and me". Maybe somebody likes the baby characters, as well as Rosalina, so having Baby Rosalina is win for them. I know, many of us are macho and want the cool characters, I know I won't pick any of the baby characters (at least the female ones), but I won't complain, my mains are already in the roster and most likely always will be in the series, so who knows, there are people out there that are going to pick the characters others downplay, and more power to them. We shouldn't be so selfish, spoiled and just demand a roster full of *our* fav Mario characters, especially when we have a bunch of cool racers on there that we most likely use all the time anyway. In the end, I find it kinda neat that you can possibly (hopefully) set up a race with only baby characters. It's like having all the main Mario characters playing in the past :D so hopefully we get more ..and we get Bowser Jr. too :P Personally, I was never fond of unfitting characters like ones that have no arms or legs. I mean, sure, it's whacky, it's funny, but kinda odd and out of place to me. So PG Peach and Baby Rosalina don't seem as unnecessary to me as King Boo for example. I just hope Diddy makes a return though, he was a fun character to use that I often picked. As for the battle stages, that may be my main disappointment. I was a MK64 kid, and to this day, I can safely say that that kind of battle set-up is the best. So for one, I'm glad they're going back to the roots in regards of the ballon / hit system. Having just 3 hits is intense and anything could happen, plus the comebacks are ever so sweet, when you have one ballon and your opponent has all 3 :D hehe. But from the looks of it, I'm definitely not fond of the stages and that they're basic circuits. I dunno, such an idea has never crossed my mind for battle, so who knows, it might work quite well, since I haven't tried it out yet, nor have I seen it in real action. I still do hope we get arenas and symmetrical stages like Block Fort, one of my all time fav. I also really like Wuhu Town from MK7. So all in all, I think there's is a lot more to MK8 than what people make it out to be. We like to jump to conslusion, and I've learned that, with Nintendo you can never let your guard down. Just look at the progression of SM 3D World last year, and how the first trailer got people concerned :D haha, then slowly we got a second and a thrid trailer and everybody was all over that like GotY / best Wii U game... :P lol

Metal Peach isn't lazy. People love Peach and this gives them a cool heavyweight version of her to play as. I think it's a cool, unexpected choice. Baby Rosalina might not be for everyone but Kids will love it and imagine a Babies only online race. That could be fun!

It's lazy on technical and design standpoint. Changing the textures is not hard at all (that kind of texture itself is the 101 of texture work), and the character itself, is hardly deep or interesting at all. They could have given all of the characters a metal form, or let people to choose the weight of your character. It's lazy to call Metal Peach as a new character, it's like painting an apple with blue paint, and calling it completely different apple. What's next? Mario Kart 10 will only introduce new metal characters. Where's my light Bowser, or light Wario?

So by that reasoning Metal Mario is worthless too? You have to think about the female characters. Peach, Daisy and Rosalina. They are all very similar. It's a good alternative to having a heavyweight female character. You have to agree there is a lot of choice when it comes to male character weights.

TTstudioFilms Peach, Daisy, and Rosalina are nothing alike, don't try to put them in the same boat. They may be princesses but they aren't alike. Daisy is outgoing, energetic, fun, and an AWESOME tomboy. Rosalina is practically the ruler of the cosmos and her knowledge of all things is vast like the universe itself! Peach is a kind-hearted princess who cares for all of her subjects but she can't seem to defend herself against Bowser since she seems to enjoy getting kidnapped!

I'm still wondering how much I'll like playing Battle with the classic rules while Online. They work perfect for Local play, but I'm not convinced that setup will work online. I don't like the idea of ghost players being able to get items and do harm to players who are still active. I'm not sure I will enjoy waiting around for a match to end stuck as a ghost either. We'll see though.

I don't really like the Metal Mario and Pink Gold Peach additions, but now that I've had time to think about it, it's not really a deal-breaker, or even something that annoys me. From what I heard in the direct, they're both Heavy class characters, instead of Medium, so it's an interesting way to still play as Mario or Peach, while getting the extra weight and power. That said, They could have gone all the way and given each character a metallic skin option to get that heavy class! :/

I can't believe how awful the character roster is. Not only did they drop Diddy Kong, Dry Bones, King Boo, and Bowser Jr, but they added Metal Peach and Baby Rosalina, and brought back Metal Mario, Baby Daisy, and Baby Peach. None of these characters should be in the game. There are so many cool characters that COULD have gotten in. What about E. Gad? Nabbit? Toadsworth? Those are three really awesome characters right there. Hell I'd take a generic Pianta over what they've added.

I'm actually kind of excited for the new battle concept of using tracks. Instead of a seemingly random skill-less chaos it'll create more hunting and effectively using items instead of, say, just shooting a red shell and it goes and hits someone. And I'm not concerned with the character roster since I use my Mii anyway. I JUST WANT TO PLAY THE GAME!!! This next month will make me nuts!

lol it is Pink Gold Peach. And, although I am not a fan of the character, they gave the Metal Characters new animations and voice overs, which included dialogue. So they were not complete clones EDIT: and Pink Gold wasn't out of nowhere, it is a used color.

First of all, how dare you? Pink gold is a thing, it does exist and is the most precious thing lol :P. I'm exited to see if Nintendo use pink gold peach in another game, that would be awesome. And any Peach form is more than welcome. As for Rosalina, I would have preferred as a kid as in the story from Galaxy instead of another baby but still she looks so cute. The only way that Pink Gold Peach could be of any interest is if she is like some kind of end-game content that represents your progress in the form of a trophy. Like, if you have to earn a three star ranking on all Grand Prix cups in every motor category to unlock her, then she could be like some sort of trophy to represent your achievement. That way, online, you could play as her as a way of showing that you are a Mario Kart 8 master! Otherwise, if that's not the case, her inclusion is just a way of Nintendo saying "Sorry! We ran out of memory space on the disk and needed to fill this extra character slot with a clone with one texture."

I think it's fairly obvious that Nintendo haven't paced this game as well as they could have. I'm not saying that parts of it seem rushed, but parts of it seem rushed. Personally I'm not disappointed about battle mode being the way it is, as I was never a huge fan of it in the first place. But of course I, along with everyone else didn't want the weird Peach clone. Although I'd rather this, than than Nintendo putting MK8 out 2 months later. I've had enough of waiting. I think we should cut them slack, they've obviously worked their asses off to get the game to where it is now, so far its looking damn near perfect.

I can totally see why they added Pink Gold Peach to the game. Firstly, pink gold is an actual thing, google it. Secondly, there isn't a single heavy female-type character at all in Mario Kart 8 (I don't know about Wendy, but she looks small.) In Mario Kart 7, Metal Mario was way more heavier than normal Mario, so it makes sense for the addition of Pink Gold Peach, so there's a female heavy character.

I'm not a fan of metal characters, but I can see why they might have wanted to add Pink Gold Peach. There aren't too many female heavyweight characters. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe Rosalina is the only one? I do know several girls who like to play as heavyweight characters, but don't necessarily want to play as a male character because they identify with the females. While it might seem like a cop-out to just throw a different texture on Peach and make her heavier, I think it's nice to see more females represented in the game! Males more often than not outnumber female characters, so I appreciate that Nintendo added more this time around (even if there are six male Koopalings but at least we're getting somewhere).

Ok so, this is Nintendo's logic in my opinion: They're trying to put more variety in Mario Kart, so naturally, they also want HEAVY female characters. Everybody hated ugly Honey Queen (me as well) and Wiggler so they replaced it with Gold Pink Peach and brought back Metal Mario instead because Mario and Peach are likable. I agree with Baby Rosalina; however, I believe having a child (NOT BABY) version of Rosalina would have been more acceptable, since in Mario Galaxy we see a younger version of her in her story. So, you could say a child version would be medium class. Rosalina is of course a HEAVY character and some people like her, but prefer lighter classes so that's why they have Baby Rosalina. Also, why Bowser Jr. didn't return-- Koopalings replaced him.

Mario Kart 8 looks really promising to me. The tracks look really interesting with the integration of non gravity. Karts look amazing, best I've seen in the series so far. The items look very good, although I hope that the boomerang isn't too overpowered (blue shell nerf I hope). The Characters though I think coulda been better. They should have brought back King Boo, Petey, I wish they woulda brought Fake Mario from Mario Sunshine instead of Metal Mario. But either than that, Mario Kart 8 looks pretty damn great and can't wait to play it!!

Am I the only person that is happy with battle mode being on the tracks? Have none of you played Muppets racemania? That was how the battle mode worked on there and I loved it, I played it more than the races. And it means this time we get 32 choices for battle mode, instead of only ~10. Yeah it's kind of sad not having dedicated layouts, but seriously, most of them were tiny and kinda bland. Although if they bought back the pipe level and luigis mansion battle stages that would have been brilliant to have it be multi-tiered. Also I agree with the new racers, where are all the weird ones like Birdo, Honey Queen and Dry Bones? Hopefully we start with the 30 revelealed and there are more to unlock. Will leave a pretty huge roster then.

I am a little surprised with how expensive Mario Kart 8 will be, but I suppose it does come with a free game. But is it really free? Also, I really don't like any of the new characters announced. Where's Nabbit, or Ninji? Instead, we get Metal Peach? I would rather play as Honey Queen as opposed to her. The items are fantastic, and a lot of the retro courses are wonderful. Plus I like the approach they took with Mario Kart 8's Rainbow Road - mixing in a futuristic vibe.

I completely agree! It's like Nintendo is kind of stumbling at the finish line! This game is ultimately impressive but the quirks and screw ups are adding up and becoming a tad depressing. Not to mention the fact that they unveiled this game entirely too soon! I hope DLC becomes avaliable because if there aren't any "secret" characters, that'd kind of suck. Anyways, I guess I'm just a complaining fanboy haha!

I guess people don't realize that we don't have alot of heavy weight characters. The reason Pink Gold Peach exists is because Nintendo wanted more female heavy weight characters. And honestly, I think she's better than the Honey Queen. and Pink Gold is actual thing btw.

I agree with the battle mode track thing and the gold pink peach. But I don't mind baby rosalina. ut I hop that bowser Jr., Birdo, Diddy Kong, Boo/King Boo & Dry Bones Return. And maybe Nabbit & Kamek as new racers?

I agree with the roster, Metal Mario was pushing it too far and also half of the characters are the 7 koopalings. Also you can still get a free game with the standard edition of MK8.

I actually do think Pink Gold Peach is cool. Lazy? Yes. But that doesn't mean that I don't like the character and the idea. I also love the inclusion of the Koopalings. That being said, that doesn't mean that I'm not disappointed that these characters, at this point, seem to be replacing things like Dry Bones and Petey Piranha. I'm really hoping that there's a slew of unlockable characters that we just haven't seen yet. Even if not, I'm content with the roster, just noticeably disappointed.

Right when you said that there were some bad thing, I started to sharpen my teeth, and I was ready to pounce. Except you are completely right. Baby Rosalina doesn't even exist; baby DK would have made more sense. Also, what even is pink golden... That's not even... It's Metal Peach, which is lame. They could've brought back King Boo or Funky Kong, but I guess Metal Peach is superior. The Battle courses was also a very strange decision. I'll have to see how they play before I can complain, but it's not looking good. I sort of like the Battle courses from MKWii, and this is just using tracks from racing. I feel like they'll play very awkwardly, but again we'll wait and see. I don't think those are game breakers at all, though. So I feel like it might be nit-picking a bit.

Pink Gold is actually a thing (it's more often called Rose Gold and it's nice looking imo) but yeah, there was really no reason for it. It's kinda hilarious though.. her name is 3 colors back to back, "Pink" "Gold" "Peach" lol, and it's funny how they couldn't even make her metal, like nope IM TOO GIRLY FOR METAL I GOTTA BE PINK GOLD. I find I'm actually in pretty much full agreement for once. A rare feeling, indeed. Anyway, I am definitely very much disappointed in the character roster shown here, mostly due to the fact that a lot of these "new" characters are nothing more than a texture-swap of already existing ones. Really, I thought we dropped that behaviour back in the SNES-era! 5 babies that look exactly the same save for their colour, and now this "pink gold" stuff. It's actually sort of become a mockery in the fandom now, with people predicting Baby Metal Mario will be the next reveal or something. It's kind of funny, really. Mario Golf: World Tour's roster is far more diverse despite having half the cast and without having to resort to "original" designs. This coming from Camelot, who started the trend of brand new characters for spin-offs with Waluigi. (Seriously, where's our Nabbit in Mario Kart 8? Will he be DLC here too?) Battle Mode is also disappointing for basically what you said as well. Looping around an existing track just doesn't seem as exciting as hiding out in places like Block Fort and Double Deck. But at least it is back to "last man standing" like it is supposed to be. Rest of the Direct was pretty much fine, though. It was stupid, but a fun kind of stupid that I hope continues. Seeing the Online stuff and the Super Horn had me really pumped, personally.

I agree with you on the characters! Bit disappointing, the new characters are a bit lazy, I feel like there should have been at least 40 characters to balance out the 7 koopalings. I do agree Pink Gold Peach and Baby Rosalina suck though. Nintendo needs to learn how to pick characters that people actually want to play as. On the battle mode though, don't fully agree. I kinda like the idea of battling on tracks. Maybe it's just me. I'm sure they'll have some actual arenas but I don't find that to be a huge loss. But I think this battle mode will be much less sucky that the atrocity of Wii/7's battlemode! Good vid though!

I'll get this game as soon as I can, I love the 2x1 they have, I'll finally be able to get Wind Waker HD!:D This game is a console seller, for sure! The Wii U seems to finally be getting what it needs to sell better, and just imagine when SSB comes out! About the new characters Baby Rosalina and Pink Gold Peach... I was a little bit disappointed because they could have better characters like the fan favorite Prof. E. Gadd, King Boo or Petey Piranha, but we get what they make, it's not like the game is bad because of some filler characters.
