These are two songs that are always played back to back on classic rock radio, like Queen's "We Will Rock You" and "We Are the Champions". From the first album with Perry in '78, so it was a tansiition to a more mainstream sound. They did a total of three albums with Perry and Gregg Rolie in the band together.

Infinity was Journey at their absolute peak, with the Santana influence brought by Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon combined with the more mainstream stylings of Steve Perry. They may have had bigger albums afterwards, but musically and creatively this was them at their best! I was so blessed to have grown up in the Bay Area during this time period with so many magical local bands.

From Journeys 4th album, Infinity, from 1978. This is the first album with Steve Perry on vocals and the last with Anysley Dunbar as the drummer. There is a irresistible effort of the instruments, coupled with the excellent multiple harmonies to produce this great experience. From the a Cappella opening with the blended harmonies you are captured within seconds. Great reaction Harri. Thanks Harri and Neal. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada 🇨🇦

It WAS incredible !! When you heard the first note of Feeling That Way on the radio, your happy vibe would tick up a notch immediately. You knew what was coming, and you prepared yourself for back-to-back air guitar sessions, anticipating Anytime to be played right after Feeling That Way . 70's radio was musical utopia, especially when looking back at it now. These reaction channels have validated every 70's rocker who has been telling everyone -- including their kids -- how great 70's music was. The explosion of talented musicians then is unprecedented. And then you add in the rapidly improving technology that improved the recording quality of albums ... Recordings from 70's music sound as powerful as recordings do today. Now THAT is incredible! But the main thing I think about today when reflecting on 70's music is simply how that there were countless good songs written. Songs that sounded wonderful as far as melody was concerned. Whatever genre -- it was one great song after another. The 80's was great, too. No doubt about that. The gifted songwriters continued producing great music. But the 70's rules the day as far as the best decade of music goes. That is incontrovertible, and the reaction of the youth as seen on these Reaction Videos Channels is further confirmation of it. It is not a contest, of course. I guess it simply comes down to the evolution of music over the last century and a half. By the time the 70's arrived, music had reached an apex, and more people were involved in the music industry. More focus was given to music as each decade arrived since around 1900. Classical music was amazing, needless to say. But it was limited in it's reach to the mainstream population. But as the 20th century rolled along, music rocked on with it. 😊 Everyone had a radio. Then albums. More people took on music as an occupation. And us regular less-gifted folk reaped the rewards of those who were blessed with musical gifts. I think this musical climb reached it's summit in the 70's -- and I, for one, ain't complaining.

The first singer coming in is Gregg Rolie, as I've noted people mentioning. He, Neal, and Santana's road manager, Herbie Herbert, formed Journey...ALL from Santana. Gregg was the singer for Black Magic Woman, while Neal played guitar at only 15 years of age. Journey is sort of a spin-off of Santana. They started Journey in '73. Journey started out as mostly an instrumental progressive rock band. Perry came on board in '77 and he and Gregg shared vocals on several songs in order to assimilate Perry into the band. Many people don't like the Perry era because they think it's too commercial. They also seem to think that he took Gregg's place, when in fact if Gregg had wanted more of a singing role, he had ample opportunity to do so on any of the albums before Perry. Gregg preferred taking a back seat to singing, BUT he also preferred a more instrumental type band. Perry's arrival countered that. Not Perry's fault though. He just did what he does, which is sing. He was a drummer for another band, but Journey already had a drummer. Herbie was Journey's manager and Herbie hired Steve. Say what you will, Journey is who they are because of Steve Perry. If not for him, none of the band would have seen the success they've seen. I still say it's Neal's band, because he's the only remaining original member, but it's very possible there wouldn't be a band 50 years later if not for Steve Perry.

About those vocal harmonies...The album that these tracks are from, Infinity, was produced by famed producer Roy Thomas Baker. He's also well known for producing Queen and The Cars, and those incredibly dense, layered harmonies are one of his trademarks. He would literally record dozens of takes of backing vocals and it creates an amazing sound.

Southern Rock? Nah, man. Journey was formed in San Fransisco. They're as West Coast as you can get. Glad you played and reacted to these great songs. Greg Rolie was Journey's lead singer, but after Steve Perry assumed lead vocals he still sang a few songs where he harmonized beautifully with Steve. This pair of songs were their best together. Rolie left the band in 1980 citing burnout, and that he wanted to settle down and start a family. He'd previously sung lead for Carlos Santana's band, and upon joining Journey, he became their lead singer. And even though Greg has a great voice, none of Journey's first three albums charted well. Once Steve Perry joined the band, and his vocals helped Infinity go 3x platinum, Rolie was relegated to backup vocals. Even though he had stated that he left Journey in 1980 due to burnout, he also said in interviews that he didn't think Perry liked him singing anymore. This pair of songs features great harmony between Steve and Greg. They balance each other so well. Greg left the band right when they broke into the stratosphere and became one fo the biggest bands in the world. His legacy is secure, though. He was an excellent keyboardist and singer.

Produced by Roy Baker. In addition to Journey, he produced Queen and The Cars. RB is known for harmonies and recording at different distances. The recordings style is different than that of Mutt Lange. The Cars 🚗 were produced by him much later, in 1984. Greg Rolie is the 1st singer. He, bass guitarist Ross Valory and lead guitarist Neal Schon quit Santana and founded Journey. Prairie Prince was on drums 🥁. But he quit and returned to The Tubes. Ansyley Dunbar on drums 🥁here. He quit and joined Jefferson Starship. Steve Smith took his spot in Journey. Greg Rolie sang less often once Steve Perry joined and stuck to keyboards. 🎹 Like Journey, I am a San Francisco native 🌁. I remember this song when I was a boy 👦. Greg Rolie retired in 1980, replaced by Jonathan Cain, who was a free agent because his band, The Babys, broke up. The retirement lasted until 1991, when Journey was already broken up. He, Ross Valory and drummer Steve Smith founded The Storm. Suggested videos 📹: 1 Journey performs Only the Young. Live in 1986. 2 Bad English performs Straight to Your Heart 3 The Storm performs I've Got a Lot to Learn about Love.n

The great Gregg Rolie on lead vocals / keyboards and with new member Steve Perry A really good bridge between both sides of the band’s evolution. One of my biggest influences of drummers Aynsley Dunbar , so incredible. Always played for the song but unfortunately didn’t get along or agree with Mr Perry’s direction
@nancywyatt821

Mr. Perry had nothing to do with it. He was the new guy, Herbie hired him, and Herbie fired Aynsley. He had a variety of reasons, including excessive drinking, having sex with underaged girls, not keeping to the tight new sound they were going for, and, last but not least, telling people it was HIS band, and he could do what he liked.

Yes , you are correct But they have both spoke of them not getting along and Mr Perry pushing for a new drummer. Aynsley’s style was to drive the band but the new direction was for him to play back in the pocket more and that caused friction. Never the less Mr Perry is an incredible singer , no doubt one of the best and Aynsley was a huge drum influence Both things can be true. Have a fantastic week

Steve had a horrible habit of firing world class drummers...first Ainsley (top 20 of all time..played with Zappa, Whitesnake, and many others), and then Steve Smith, to get a drummer that sounded like a drum machine...Raised on Radio sucked as a result.

@@nancywyatt821No, he did not! Ainsley insulted Perry and the musical direction of the band, and Perry lobbied until Ainsley was fired.

When Steve jumps in, it just moves the song in another direction. Besides the tempo change, his voice dominates.

This is what was known as a "double A side." On 45 vinyl singles, one side was A and the other B. The single was on the "A" side, and the B side was an album track. Sometimes, record companies would release "double A sides" -- two for one, if you will. Other popular "double A sides" are We Will Rock You/We Are the Champions by Queen and Cupid/I've Loved You for a Long Time by The Spinners.

They are from San Francisco, not really southern rock. This band opened for ELO when I went to see them in 1977. I was amazed. I think Steve Parry's vocals are amazing.

Neal Schon quit school at 15, left home at 15, and was so good at playing guitar that he had Eric Clapton and Carlos Santana fighting over him….Carlos won out and Neal and Gregg Rollie split off to form Journey. Not bad for a 45 year old song…..

Neal wanted to stay in the Bay Area and Clapton wanted him to move to London, so he chose Santana, and was already friends with Rolie, so that helped.

IMO, Perry's voice has more impact when Rolie is also singing lead in parts. The high vocals can become way overdone

Hey Harri! It's been a while..Anytime I hear anything off this album it brings me back to this guy I met in Miami Beach from California while visiting my Grandparents. He wouldn't stop about this band "JOURNEY" that played at fairs by him. Then this album was released. He was so right.

At this point Journey had 2 lead singers. Gregg was keyboards and vocals but Herbie Herbert wanted a more vocal forward sound and had just hired Steve...the superstar. Gregg was getting burned out and left shortly thereafter.

Steve was making chicken coups for his step dad in Hanford when Journey hired him...he was not a superstar yet. He did take full advantage of the opportunity, and Neal Schon was the catslyst...saw an interview where Perry said Neal's playing spoke to his soul. Neal is every bit the virtuoso that Steve is, and has played with the biggest artists in the business!

Live at the 1983 US Festival blows away the Halifax performance..one of the greatest sets ever recorded, and Rik's voice and guitar playing are both virtuoso...vocals every bit as good as Perry's vocals..although different styles...Rik is more Rock, Perry more blues/R&B...both great, and Steve commented on Rik's vocals when Triumph opened for Journey at the Rose Bowl around 1982 or so.

Love Journey (with Steve Perry)! 💖💖💖 Try Journey's song "Mother, Father" from the 1981 Escape Tour. Steve Perry hits some angelic high notes in it. And "Why Can't This Night Go On Forever" the Official Video from 1987. It is a great song. And a great song and video "When You Love A Woman" (1996 - Official Video).

My favorite lineup of the band. I wish they could have convinced Gregg Rolie to stay. Loved the sound of his and Steve's voices together. Would rather have seen Neal Schon go. He caused/s way too much drama. The guy they have singing for them now undoubtedly has a great voice, but they've been nothing but a cover band for years. Thanks for revisiting these classics. 😊

Are you kidding? You are a moron..Neal was as much of their sound as Perry ever was...instantly recognizable guitar tone from Neal. They would have sucked without Schon, and went south after Rolie left...pure 15 year old bubble gum drivel.

Greg Rolie and Neal Schon left Santana to form Journey... there were three fantastic "musicians" albums, that were prog/jazz fusion/space rock...then they added Perry on vocals and went more mainstream blues/rock. Neal Schon is a virtuoso!
