Uighur Dilemma (2009): Ever since the violence between Muslim Uighurs and Han Chinese, a fear of fanaticism has taken hold. Is the government's decision to demolish the Uighur area Kashgar really due to an earthquake threat?

Kashgar is a cultural icon. Parts of the city have stood for 2000 years and within its labyrinth, Uighur traditions are unchanged. 'We live as we did in the old times' says Tursun, a 6 generation pot thrower. But times are changing. Beijing's deputy mayor has announced that destruction of the old town is the only way to prepare for an earthquake threat. 'I spent my whole childhood in this place. If they destroy it, we can't continue our business' cries one of Kashgar's many blacksmiths. Many Uighur's are convinced that the authorities 'never tell the truth'. Yet some are happy to be rehoused in government buildings, admitting that their homes are dangerous. Kashgar is of great strategic value for China - if small separatist groups here link with Taliban insurgents across the border, there could be a full-scale armed conflict in Western China. 'If a handful of religious extremists, or international terrorists appear, we will crack down on them immediately' says Beijing's deputy mayor. His plan could rebuild a sour relationship. Or give the Uighurs a new reason to throw off Chinese occupation of their homeland.

Uighurs were originally from further north in central Asia, closer to China's northern border. They migrated to China's northwest Xingjiang in the 9th century and became Muslims in the 10th century. They always made troubles for China in the border region. On the other hand, the other Muslim ethnic group, Hui, originally from Middle East around 7th century, is well assimilated in China. Some Uighurs wants to make the Chinese region Xingjiang an independent Islamic state. The East Turkistan Islamic Movement group has been active at least since 1930's. In the past decade, their tatics have turned violent. Their members had been trained by Al-qaeda and detained at Guantanamo. It's incorrect to say Uighurs are under religious persecution. It's more accurate to say their liberty is affected by the social unrest and by the fight against extremism.

Well it’s 12yrs later. Many of these people are either dead or living in concentration camps. Their places of worship demolished. The CCP kept a few as museums for tourists. The old man in this video should have been listened too. They have stripped away everything from these people. It’s became a police state. Their native language is gone, and now they are forced to pray to the CCP. It’s sad, heartbreaking and shocking that there’s video evidence of this out there, yet, many governments still do business with China. It's true. They could have just relocate people and allow the ancient buildings on its own. Make it as Heritage site. They need to assimilate ppl through education. Make Chinese/Mandarin as 1st language and theirs as 2nd language. To make them modernised, to make sure that the have education and skills of the modern society. Like engineers, doctors, nurses, etc. It also do not mean that they have to change their culture. They could get Hui Muslims and other PRCs to stay in Xinjiang and slowly assimilate into work force.

Yes!!!! Kashgar has several earthquakes last year(2017)!!!!!! It's really necessary!!! In a small city near Kashgar 8 people were killed and 20+ people injured. All of those old houses(more than 200 houses) there like that in this movie collapsed. But, during the earthquakes no flat collapsed and no one were killed or injured in Kashgar. I can understand the feeling about leaving the old house, where include our memory. However, It's time to change. Ps. Is it really strange that the report do not check the local earthquake report, isn't it?

I don't understand why so many Uighurs said their religion, YSL, is forbidden in China. Coming from a small town with 50 thousand people in Hubei, middle of China. The only two religion places in hometown, one is Mosque, another one is Taoism temple. And almost every major cities has Mosques, you can see people at there pray, even in Beijing.

what exactly is the purpose of this video? It doesn't provide any constructive advice on how to improve the relation between the Han and Uighurs, nor does it promote harmony and peace in the region. It completely dismissed the fact that most of the victims during the "protest" was of Han ethnicity, and it was a clear reflection of the hatred SOME Uighurs have towards the Han Chinese. I have been to Xinjiang quite a few times, I have experienced both the friendliness and hostility at times. It is understandable that there is local resistance and dissatisfaction with the Han migration and the lifestyle changes, but it gives people no excuse to cause trouble and start killing innocents. Maybe you should spend a bit more time condemning such behaviour and less time trying to find excuses for terrorists. It is difficult enough for both the Han and Uighur people to integrate due to the cultural and language barrier, and you coming here with your bigotry, pretending to care about the locals, when the truth is that you don't know FUCK ALL about the situation and not trying to do any good. Excuse my language there, but I often find the constant China bashing in the western media frustrating. China too is suffering from religious radical extremism, and Xinjiang is the frontline of this battle. No government shall show any mercy when it comes to terrorism, and everyone should condemn terrorists, not sympathise with them, a question like "are there a lot of separatists sympathisers in the old town?" is absolutely misleading and ridiculous. Honestly, I've lived in China for almost 20 years... demolishing old buildings and moving people into new building projects is happening all over China and is not specifically targeted at any ethnicity. If you go to the capital Beijing, you'll find that the exact same thing happened to the Hutongs there. They restore some old living quarters for cultural and historical value, and as tourist attractions, but most have been torn down and people have been moved to apartment blocks. For me this is why I don't trust western media reporting on China, it's always biased and lacks context.

The Chinese government shoud treat everyone 100% equally, Uighur and Han, and other minorities. We should support minorities financially and educationally, but no more political preferential treatment. We have to push minorites to learn Chinese and get better education, beside they learn their mother tongue. As I know lots of Uighur don't speak Mandarin. Even Canandian and British try to teach their kids Chinese nowadays. How could minorities have a advanced life in China without speaking Chinese? Language barrier stop people getting better education. It is ture all over the world. I wanted to have better education so I learnt English and German. Learning Chinese as a Chinese citizen in China benefit themsleves. BTW, as Chinese government is quite rich. We should invest more money in education.

If Chinese would really want to help, then, help rebuild these traditional homes. China has experienced earthquakes, as well as other countries, and somehow, traditional homes are rebuilt. I am watching this video precisely five years after the 2009 Urumqi riots, and clearly things in Xinjiang have not improved since. If the Chinese government is so concerned about Islamic terrorists harming China, their best course of action is to leave the Uyghers alone. Give the Uyghurs real autonomy over the land they have lived in for the past 2000 years, the same land that has known peace & prosperity among the natives before the Qing dynasty intruded upon it.
