For those who are unfamiliar with gen 1 mechanics, in gen 1 crits ignore all stat changes including stat buffs to your Pokémon. Thankfully, in gen 2 and onward crits stack on your Pokémon's stat buffs and ignores their debuffs which makes crits more viable for solo runs in later gens
@kevinjustus63412 жыл бұрын
Gen1 Focus Energy (which makes crits nigh impossible due to a coding error) would have been helpful with Sword Dance strategies.
@djkates19162 жыл бұрын
Theoretically, yes, but that does run into two issues. One, it makes setup take an extra turn. Since Scyther's bulk is just on the low side of OK by Gen 1 standards (base 70 HP, 80 Defense, 55 Special), that could get dangerous. Two, it takes up a move slot. Even with how barren Scyther's move pool is, dedicating a move slot to Focus Energy is potentially a problem.
@gamingwhilebroken23552 жыл бұрын
@@djkates1916 Even worse, you can’t use slash with it. Slash without the speed boosting badge is a coin flip and with it (and badge boosting) it overpowers focus energy and start critting all the time. Which means he has to give slash for swift, which is very bad.

Not seeing Jrose keep Focus Energy on Scyther hurt my soul lol. It's basically a one-way toggle for when Scyther needs to shift from abusing crits to abusing Swords Dance and badge boost mid-fight. @ziocarlone2 жыл бұрын
Nice idea, but Jrose prefers playing avoiding abusing glitches that are not the beloved badge boost glitch, so I think he wouldn't have used Focus Energy anyway. :P
@waynerisner49742 жыл бұрын
What is the mechanic behind focus energy? How does it compliment swords dance?
@ziocarlone2 жыл бұрын
@@waynerisner4974 basically Focus Energy should multiply by four times the probability of hitting a critical strike; in 1st gen it instead divides it by four times. Since critical strikes ignore statistic increases, after 3 Sword Dances a critical strike hits for less damage than a normal strike.

@@CalaveraSancho Slash was still worth to keep just for the champion's Pidgeot; one Swords Dance + Swift doesn't OHKO the Pidgeot, so you're taking three turns to KO it vs. the two that just Slash takes, and you can't afford to give Pidgeot that extra turn as it is doing decent damage with Wing Attack, or could go for Sky Attack turn 1 and then OHKO you on turn 2. Also against Agatha you don't got a good time to setup against her, as the ghosts can confuse or put you to sleep, while Swords Dance + Swift obviously doesn't help at all against them, and the Golbat can confuse, also do decent damage with Wing Attack, or eliminate your Swords Dance and badge boosts with Haze, better to have Slash to OHKO the Golbat and Arbok without any setup to lessen the amount of luck needed in an already very luck dependent fight.

It's gonna be funny when the Charmeleon/Charizard run comes, they learn Swords Dance, Body Slam, Dig and they are fast enough that their Slashes will always crit, so Flamethrower, their signature attack on the anime and others is arguably their worst move since there aren't many Pokémon weak to Fire past Erika.
@OmegaTyrant2 жыл бұрын
Flamethrower/Fire Blast is going to be better to have than Slash, they're still stronger immediate moves for Zard than Slash even with its auto-crit (142/180 power vs. 140) and keeps Zard's access to a special move against targets with much worse Special than Defense (e.g. Cloyster), while Slash doesn't really offer much unique utility that is going to help it in any matchup more than Swords Dance + Dig/Earthquake or Body Slam.
@Igorcastrochucre2 жыл бұрын
@@OmegaTyrant The thing about jrose's runs is that the Pokémon has to win battles quickly and a Charizard using Slash has about the same impact a Swords Dance + Body Slam combo, which take two turns. Charizard also is gonna have to rely on Dig, which is always 2 turns, so jrose will have to find ways to save time.
@OmegaTyrant2 жыл бұрын
@@Igorcastrochucre Important trainers have more than one pokemon and Swords Dance + Body Slam/Dig/Earthquake is hitting KO benchmarks that Slash alone doesn't (Zard also learns Earthquake so Dig is irrelevant in the later game), while if you need immediate power, like I said Flamethrower/Fire Blast are still stronger than Slash while offering unique utility. Another thing I forgot to mention, crits ignore your badge boost, so Zard's fire moves are also getting that 12.5% badge boost once Blaine is beaten while Slash gets none, making the gap between them larger.

I can't believe it has been two years or so and still my favourite Gen 1 Pokemon hasn't been done yet! One day Mohawk Fox, one day. :D Amazing work with your engaging banter and explanations by the way, really makes the videos shine!

So Civilian Surge has been promoted to recruit Surge. Or Captain Surge considering he won 7 times. From civilian to recruit, to assistant manager, to giftshop owner to private, to ensign to Lieutenant to Captain.

I'd love to see a Seadra video! Just finished a solo run of Seadra in Emerald while watching this (starting as Horsea). Hard walled in the beginning with only bubble to attack... but smokescreen spam made it work! Seadra then effortlessly swept the whole game up until Wallace and got walled again. Dragon dance and return while holding the silk scarf got me through with only four resets!
@mauser56802 жыл бұрын
Not even a quarter through the video and this is already a pretty interesting run. I'm curious if you'd consider doing a run with Cradily, maybe in Gen 5 or Gen 6 where it gets Storm Drain as an ability. I feel like it'd be a pretty cool run.

Those generations kinda blow…. I’m not sure if Jrose is interested if it’s later than gen 3. Idk he could sometimes play later generations

@@jameswagoner1460 If those generation are bad, what is gen 1? Turbo-bad? Gen 5 is leagues above the buggy and unbalanced mess gen 1 was.

@@giulioceresini1435 jank is fun. Gen 1 is Jank city and is specilhically interesting for solo runs because a lot of mechanichs and glitches just aren't there in later games. The games after gen 1 fixed enought Jank to not be as funny, but also did not fix enought to ne legitimately good. Gen 2 feel 100 times worse to play than gen 1 if you ask me.

Personal prediction before watching. Scyther will probably struggle with the Elite Four. Limited movepool. It does get SD though, which should help. Would love to see Porygon. Will be like a much worse Staryu.
@tomc.57042 жыл бұрын
Porygon will be fun I'm personally waiting for Farfetch'd and Marowak, because I think they have a chance of dethroning Onix as the worst fully-evolved pokemon

@@tomc.5704 Farfetch'd gets SD and Agility though, which could be potentially quite handy for both badge boosts and just generally sweeping. Agatha would be an issue for Farfetch'd though for sure.

As soon as you mentioned the move pool and the only attacks causing damage being Normal Moves. My first thoughts was Ghost Tower and Agatha. This is going to hurt.

Technically Struggle is classified as Normal Type in every Generation. It's just that from Gen. 2 onwards it deals typeless damage.

AWWWW YEAAA!!!! I WAS WAITING FOR THIS ONE!!!! I did solo scyther on Leaf Green and it was very nice! Brock (needed lvl 15 and pursuit), Blane (omfg i still remember those fire blasts...) and Lorellei (i hate that dewgong!!! hahahaha)... They were my 3 nightmares but i was able to find a way to the victory. The Rival's Pidgeot gave me some trouble too (R5 and R6 with those featherdances and wing attacks) but not that much. I beated the champion at lvl65 (starting at 61 vs Lorellei) and i didin't have to use any rare candies along the run. Agatha was easy and Lance used only dragon rage with his Gyarados, giving me time to set the swords dance, just enought to win. The move Swords Dance totally saved my run! I beated Rival 5 with only 1 HP but 1-shoting everything. xD Final move pool against the elite 4 and champion: Slash ~ Aerial Ace (this one never miss xD) ~ Swords Dance ~ Steel Wing (for the hiker, i mean.. bruno... and against Lance's aerodactyl). I equipped some berries but i could do it without them.

In my opinion, banning double team for being the most effictive method is unfortunate. It reminds me of Karl Jobst's video on Goldeneye 007 Nintendo 64 speedrunning history, wherein runners discovered that the fastest way to complete the game is to stare at the floor the whole time for lag reduction. Is it boring? Of course. But it's technically the fastest. And that an unintended feature like badge boost glitch would be utilized while an intended strategy is disallowed on the grounds that it's very effective is like... darn. You know?
@shanescarfeo58212 жыл бұрын
It's different because Goldeneye is a competitive speed game so going faster than everyone else is the primary objective. Here Jrose wants to go fast of course but he's not competing against anyone else. It's a self imposed rule set that he wants to use for these runs to test his own strategies not just spam double team.

Hi Jrose, my name is Micky and after watching your videos for quite a long time without commentating, so I just wanted to leave you a comment. I found your channel because I was searching for a "Magicarp only Pokémon challenge" and was fascinated from the first Minute. Over the time I watched more and more of your videos with partially impossible challenges like beating Pokémon Red and Blue by only using Ditto, Abra, Zubat or beating the elite 4 with only level 5 Pokémon. Stuff I thought is impossible until I watched your video. Therefore I wanted to thank you for your great content. Your persistency, the funny and compelling way you comment and the always great and astounding challenges you master. Thank you very much Jrose and please keep devastating Pokémon, I can't wait for the next: WAN! TOOH! TRIII! HAHAHA! Videos on your channel. :) Greetings from Germany
