Whenever I get a new ball I automatically change the surface to replicate box so I know I can match it again if I want. The cosmos I polished before rolling it and now I’m going to change it back to 4K to have it read a smidge earlier.

To answer your question, it does come down to how well the ball performs for a bowler and, I agree, a bowler should start with box finish and then adjust from there. I remember the Lights Out and that many bowlers weren't fond of it because it tended to be skid/flippy (the ball had a 1500 polished surface). I experienced the same thing, so I took off the polish and gave the ball a 2000 surface and the ball had a much more controllable down lane reaction. This ball ended up being one of the best balls I ever owned. The Wolverine Dark Moss may end up being the same kind of ball for most league bowlers, only it's starting with a matte finish (4000 fast), so just start with box finish and adjust from there. If you need more down lane pop, adjust surface have it polished. I hope this comment helps.

Bowled 7 games with 4K was not liking the motion I saw at the back end, low rev speed matched player. I chose to try a compound on it and BAM ! Now holds its line consistently and continues thru the pin deck rolling about 5 feet longer for me. Highly recommend you try it JUNGO ! I like it a little more than the OG but with the compound.

I just got the Wolverine Dark Moss and used it as is out of the box. First 2 games were on house shot and thought it looked good. Bowled 3rd game of sport shot (Dragon) with it as well. I think if it were polished, I wouldn't have been able to use it the 3rd game. I think I'll keep 4K Fast for a while and give it a good try.

I have a dark moss waiting to be drilled. Gonna try the 4k fast and see how it goes before giving it a polish. Will be my 1st 4k fast ball since the change

I bought the 900 Global Dark Moss on Super Bowl weekend and try it on 4K Fast and Iiked it when the ball transitioned. I may keep it for now and see how it goes.

I usually like to use it box finished so I polish it and then throw it with surface once I see no hook down there in lane

I always keep things at box finish first because that is the finish I based my purchase from. I give it a few games and then decide if I want to adjust the surface.

Jungo, Great comparison blue vs Dark Moss. I would try 4K fast out of the box for several games before deciding to polish. Thanks! Tony

I always try a ball as it comes first it would be foolish not to you could miss out on the best the ball has to offer, but i'm not shy on changing things if i don't like what i see.

On polished balls I usually throw them for a few shots then end up knocking some of the polish off of them to get them to read the lane better for me.

What i don’t understand everyone said it was the 1500 polish that was giving a soft reading why didn’t it effect other balls with the 1500 polish like the zen and the dark code etc

I throw my stuff out of box and see what it does. I did the opposite on my dark code I got one that was still the 1500 polish. So I hit it on the spinner up to as close as fast 4k as I could

@Jungo: Do you know anything about the Spectre Sapphire yet as far as release date and if it is going to be a stateside release? Regarding this comparison, my only gripe is that you took a ball designed for shorter to medium conditions and compared them on a longer pattern. I would be curious to see what the comparison is on a pattern like Mercury (40 feet). I get that the cover and core are the same on both but they do say apparently that color does play a role (which is up in the air for debate).

@@ryanbutler2339 it’s a really great ball, super long and snappy asym. I use my reality before it simply because i hooks earlier when the oil is heavy and a nuclear cell to control the backend once the lanes burn up

I don't do any polish. Don't believe in having gloss on a ball, makes the coverstock less true to what it really should be. I usually keep clean stuff at a shiny 4K though. Just don't want extra barriers from the lane. I don't exactly have a ton of revs

Got 3 balls with 4K. 2 Reality Checks & a HyRoad Pearl. Personally I'm glad Storm is doing this 4K cause I normally take the cover down on my polished balls. So far I've liked the reaction of the 4K balls & had no need to modify the covers.

Trying to find something to replace spectre reaction what would be your suggestion? I have rstx2 but it is a lot stronger, and I got the spectre for late in the day. Was looking at the dark moss but not sure if it’s going to be too weak and zen seems to roll like my trend.

From what I remember, I had a talk with Chad McLean and he said darker colors (blues, blacks, purples) for the most part tend to be more smoother than the brighter colors (yellows, whites, pinks). Hence why balls like the IQ tour and pitch black are the colors there are. A black like the Code Black was a pearl, if it was white would have later and more snappy because of the color
@Xcel

Well what does adding a little yellow to the blue do other than making it green? Brunswick said they tested colors years ago and the biggest difference between two colors was less than a board, imperceptible without computer tracking.

If you were comparing the original Wolverine at 1500/polished to the new Wolverine at 4000fast/polished, it's not a direct 1:1 comparison.

I have the blue , it slid too much so I had the finish sanded, its still slides too much for me.. the pro shop I went to, arent really pros, he didnt explain the difference in finishes to me, and I didnt know the difference in bowling lingo until recently, even though Ive been bowling for more than 20 years lol.. oops, now I can tell I need solid finish, not pearl.... Im tired of the ugly swirl colors though, that was one reason I got the blue one, the color is better. the swirls look like a bunch of different play dough colors being mixed together

So if you could just polish a legal ball to react just like the illegal ball then the original wolverines surface and get its same reaction then it seems like the hardness of the original ball wasn't that big of a deal. I'm no pro just what I reasoned.
