04/27/21 UPDATE: Mariah Carey referenced this performance by saying, "I didn't do so great on that - I need to watch it again, you guys." It appears, Mariah *did* watch this video again, later admitting on 𝕏 (formerly Twitter) “Okaaaay.. I guess it’s not so bad!” That would be an understatement! Thank you to the "Lambily" for all the views and comments on this video throughout the years!

The thing that separates MC from the countless list of other singers who use melisma is the insane musicianship. Her melismas always seem to fit perfectly with the melody and tempo of the song, to the point where you don't even realise just how much riffing she's actually doing. It virtually never comes across as excessive, to me at least. It always seems to add meaning and expression without being done for the sake of it or to show off. Too many singers often get carried away with showing off fancy runs that display great skill and technique but little to no musicality. That for me is why MC is one of the GOATs.

That moment when a singer's live performance during her "vocal decline" is still better than any pre-recorded vocal performance on the radio in the past decade...
@ashm79224 жыл бұрын
It isn't a vocal "decline" even. She has the same range, same technique, just more protrusive nodules, so she's singing around rasp. Some would argue that this is better than her prime, because many critics dubbed her as emotionless at that time, but her performance her clearly raps soul into every note and run she does.
@qwerty13_incognito3 жыл бұрын
This isn't even a vocal decline but rather another transition period (just like what happened during her Emotions, Music box, Merry Christmas, and Daydream eras) as her nodules become bigger that doesn't suit to her high key 1990s records. The real vocal decline happened in 2015. If you'll compare 1997 to 2014, Mariah has an intact 5 octave range 2015 was the year her octaves become lower having a solid 3.3 octaves.
@qwerty13_incognito3 жыл бұрын
The reason why people think that her 1997 Butterfly Era was her vocal decline as her light tone shifted to more rasp darker tone. Experimenting her range once again.
@riyu77103 жыл бұрын
coz the true decline is in rainbiw era wbk
@qwerty13_incognito3 жыл бұрын
@@riyu7710 the real decline happened in 2015. What she had during 1997-2014 were the result of her growing nodules, alcohol problem, fatigue, and lack of rest and recovery(as she often perform early in the morning or while she's sick). 2015 was the year when she can't access her full 5octaves and 3 seminotes range leaving her about 3 octaves in total.

But in a sense it seems like some of her own songs irritate the hell out of her to sing buttttt they are fan favorites and she cares about the songs and fans. I remember reading something in an article about famous artists who dislike to perform certain songs of theirs that are fan favorites. Madonna: Like A Virgin and Vogue, MJ: Beat It, Mariah:Hero, Celine: My Heart Will Go On, Brittany: Hit Me Baby, Gloria Estefan and a few of her songs and the list goes on. I remember in 2018 when my dad and I were talking at the table and this was playing on the tv in the back and he started shouting and cheering her on. He used to sing and produce and write so he really appreciated her skills. It was really cool to see how he cheered her on like he was watching football

It’s a performance that really shows her vocal athleticism. The runs, riffs & overall arrangement is not easy for any singer to perform!

Kinda random, but the emotion and passion i see in her face is how i can tell the difference between her live and lip synced performances...no shade..just facts! it slays tho!

+linkhare7 Gotta agree, lol

You can definitely tell when she's lip-syncing; when she's actually singing you can really see the emotion whereas when she's lipping, she just tried to look pretty lol
