Overall an excellent season. 10-3-1, the best offense by points and fourth ranked among the defenses (on the NFL side that is). Eight all pro players, great team stats vs their competition, and the franchise’s first ever winning season and playoff appearance. They didn’t win it all of course, but certainly a very good year.

12 years old at the time. Went to every game in the old Cotton Bowl from 66 to 69 before they moved to Texas Stadium. What a time to be alive. I cried everytime they lost.

These were the most exciting days to be a Cowboy fan and the Cotton Bowl was truly representative of what society looked like as the fans were from every walk of life. My parents had season tickets for four to every home game from 1965-1970 and I saw many many great pivotal games from this era of the team coming into their own. It was a magical time to be a kid growing up and spending Sundays in the Fall and Winter at the Cotton Bowl especially when our State Fair of Texas going on in the month of October. Great memories of truly great times.

I ironically have two ties to these players. My best friend (rip) dad is Dave Manders #51 and I worked for Dave. And my best friend living today dated Dandy Don during the ole cotton bowl days. She's 78 and still looks good.

Unique they were. Constant shifting in and out of formations before the snap. A defense that read plays instead of just attacking the ball. Much of what they did is now basic strategy for all teams today. And yes it was indeed 1966 was the beginning of an incredible run. 20 straight winning seasons, Only missing the playoffs twice in that span. All while winning 13 division titles, 18 playoff games, 5 NFC titles, and 2 Super Bowl Victories. Not to mention becoming the one and ONLY America's Team. How Bout Them Cowboys

Pete Gent later authored a book entitled 'North Dallas Forty'. Dick Nolan and Dan Reeves later became head coaches in the NFL. "Dandy Don" Meredith would become one of the announcers on Monday Night Football. Bob Hayes is the only man to win an Olympic Gold Medal and a Super Bowl ring. Chuck Howley is the only man to be named Super Bowl MVP from a losing team.

Pete Gent (Michigan State) was one of at least two undrafted players on the '66 Cowboys who had signed despite having only played basketball and not tackle football in college. Another was Cornell Green (Utah State). Both were selected by the same franchise in the NBA Draft but two years apart - Green by the Chicago Zephyrs in 1962, Gent by the Baltimore Bullets in 1964.

The 1966 Dallas Cowboys had their first winning record and the first divisional championship. The girls shown in the halftime routine weren't yet the Dallas Cowboys Cheerleaders, but rather the Cowbelles.

Including their most lopsided victory in franchise history. A very nice 56-7 blasting of the Eagles. How nice is that picture. And now there is a strong feeling that America's Team is about to rise again. And finally with a coaching staff capable of putting it all together. And Earl Thomas may be on the way. @@jstube36 Whether the Cowboys will rise this season, or while Jerry Jones is owner and general manager is problematical. The original braintrust running the Dallas Cowboys-Clint Murchison,Jr.,Tom Landry and Texas Schramm-had this franchise going between 1966-85. Yes, Dallas had twenty consecutive winning records, which saw the team win two Super Bowl wins in 1971 and 1977.

@@armorybrunotjr.3204 . What I see so for 2020. I think Jerry and Stephen are willing to let Coach McCarthy and an impressive diverse coaching staff run things. At least on the field. That in itself says much. The Offense has some firepower ready to explode. If the OL can be fixed, I can see 25+ points per game. The defense is the concern. But it will be much more aggressive than Rob Marinelli's unit. I guess I'm always optimistic at about this time. I usually go to their home openers. Which I've been doing regularly since 1997. It just burns inside that I can't be there this year. Football without the crowd. It just doesn't sound right. Oh well. Football is football. My Cowboys are ready and so am I.

Jack Buck was the assigned CBS-TV announcer to Cowboys games at that time (he worked the first half of the ‘66 title games and the second half of the ‘67 game, the one we all are used to calling The Ice Bowl)

Bill Mercer still alive, was the radio voice, as at one time, DON CRIQUI was before Don went to join the brand new N.O. SAINTS. After Criqui left and Buck left for ST. LOU's football Cards on radio- DAN KELLY ON TV-, FRANK GLIEBER rolled in from CLEVELAND. After GLIEBER got the regional tv job for CBS doing the Cowboys, VERNE LUNDQUIST took over on Radio with UT LONGHORN radio guy BRAD SHAM as colorman. When LUNDQUIST a local WFAA-8-TV DALLAS-FT. WORTH sports anchor left for CBS, SHAM became the number one radio play by play guy. Frank Glieber sadly, died of a heart attack at age 51 in 1985. To me, GLIEBER is/was the best voiceman ever for the 'BOYS. He was the TV COWBOYS voice of my early years as a POKES fan, beginning in 1967. I dropped Dallas and the Hou. OILERS before 1975, going to root for DENVER in 1972 to the present, leaving the BOYS behind after 1974..dropping the Oilers after 1971..

Most know Pete Gent for North Dallas Forty but the reality he was a gutsy player not afraid to go over the middle. RIP Mr. Gent. BTW why Landry put in Bob Hayes on the goal line where the linebacker blew by him and made the play thus ending the play and the season was never explained. Brain fart.

His war PTSD came into play at times usually in big games with game planning and decision making. They way folks knew is whether he blamed that player which he did.

I did not know Mel Renfro was used as RB. But not surprised. Coach Landry was always known to use players in multiple positions. Dallas back then was playing the vertical style game that the AFL played. The rest of the NFL was too stubborn to evolve from "3 downs and a cloud of dust".

He switched Bob Lilly from DE to DT, Mel Renfro from RB to DB, Randy White from MLB to DT, Rayfield Wright, from TE to T. All are in the Hall of Fame.

1966 is when the Cowboys first became competitive. Kudos to Cowboys management for being patient with Tom Landry because it ended up paying off big time with the Cowboys making it to the Super Bowl 5 times in the 70's and winning 2 of them. They were also really close to making the first 2 Super Bowls but lost to Green Bay in the final minute of both the 1966 and 67 NFL Championship Games. They also came within one game of the Super Bowl every year from 1980-82 but lost the NFC Championship Game each time...to Philadelphia in 1980, San Francisco in 1981, and Washington in 1982

An awesome, marrauding defensive front, if not the best, then right up there with the Rams and maybe the Colts, who were also fierce. Note three stripes on the blue jerseys. Don't know when they went to just two stripes on the sleeves, but this jersey would be soon gone.

The uniform of the Dallas Cowboys changed in 1964. That's when they went to the colors that we all know and love today. It has gone through some subtle changes over the years. For instance the blue jerseys went from light to dark blue in the 80's. The Star on the silver helmet got a white inline in 1967. The pants went through various shades over the years also.

@@jstube36 Around 1971, they went to an astounding Charcoal Grey color for the pants. That, and their royal blue jerseys was the best Cowboy uni ever. They dropped that color for the pants around 1975.

@UCUPR6OWsOH3yLbzfE5SHKVQ Oh, absolutely. They were just a team like the early 70's Dolphins, or Montana/Rice 49ers. You knew they could win a game, no matter how bad it looked for them. They topped the Vikings in the '75 playoff at the last minute, beat the Redskins the same way and came out of nowhere twice in championship games (1978, 1980) to beat Atlanta.

Though closely associated with St. Louis, Buck was CBS' primary Cowboys voice at the time. Cardinals had Jack Drees. Frank Glieber was more associated with the Cowboys than Buck, but his assignment was the Browns.

@@brucedavis76 It comes with the territory. We accept both love and hate. Yet I choose not to hate our rivals. We are all after the same Lombardi Trophy(RIP Bart Starr). And Our Dallas Cowboys, win or lose, will fight for every inch no matter what. And I for one will forever be in their corner.
