After dragging this 73 Maverick Grabber out of the woods of Tennessee and cleaning it up it is finally time to see if this 250 inline six is going to be a runner or not. Watch as we tear down this engine that is the worst we have ever taken apart.

In my opinion, building up that 250 and making the Maverick a solid bracket car would be a great way to introduce Wawa to working on and racing her own car. It's not always about how fast you can go. Just watched to the end. That thing is junk, but I still think you should put in a 6, even if you just get another one.

My friend built a Maverick Grabber with a hopped up 302 he raced constanly at the Tulsa International Dracestrip(?). It was a great car, made me appreciate the strength of a well-built 302. At this point, your kids have the ability to pull a motor if you told them to. Also, the knowledge each has and have little or no issues working together. I would trust them to work on my car. Love the Maverick, and love the video!

Being a retired mechanic what I observed while watching this video is the car has been sugared. Sugar will cause a gasoline engine to lock up especially if it has been run a long time and gotten up to temperature. The melted sugar coats everything it contacts with a sticky goo that when gets cold locks everything together like a weld would. My advice would be to toss the engine in the scrap pile along with the gas tank (there may be more sugar in the tank yet) and build what ever engine your heart desires and install it into the Grabber with a strong transmission and a 35 spline 9 inch rear end. Good luck and enjoy your family while you can!

I once owned a car with that much sludge in a running engine. I bought it dirt cheap as a work car because I liked the model, even though it smoked like an old go cart. After I had driven it a few thousand miles, I decided to change the valve cover gaskets. That's when I discovered the caked up mess of sludge. It took me an entire afternoon to thoroughly clean the rockers etc. I had to wait until the next weekend to do the other side of the V6. The oil drain back holes had been completely plugged so the oil would well up and overflow into the pushrod valley. Also being force fed into the intake valve guides. After I completely cleaned both banks, no more smoking.

Upgrade the interior, sporty race buckets, harnesses, possibly a cage. Build a bored and stroked NA inline 6, possibly turbo it down the road after she gains experience on the track and strip. Could not believe the state of that engine, unreal! Thanks for the continued great content, love it.

This was literally like a suspence, mystry, thriller. I wear a fitbit and could actually witness my heat rate going up and up with each new discovery - it's just now back under 100. As for what to do now, you could force feed a six to equal the power of a V8 but my bias would be to start with a N/A V8 that, if you wanted you build over time in bite size chunks simply so Wa could do it: carb, camsnaft etc. I'm being presumtuous but I think a lot of folks think it might make a good drag car for Wa but that's completely up to you guys. It would make a good series like the Galaxy wagon, V8 5 speed swap Falcon or the VW. Project series are very exciting to watch - you can hardly wait for the next episode

My mom bought a 79 Ford LTD 2dr in 1985. The car was in really good shape inside and out. It had a 351 windsor in it with 56,000 original miles. When it got just over 60,000 miles it just all at once started smoking something terrible. I really thought it broke some rings or a piston except that the engine did not miss. I looked down the oil cap and the valve covers were filled up with oil. I pulled the valve covers off and the oil drain back holes were totally plugged up with sludge. I knew several people that used Quaker State oil. Quaker State and Penzoil motor oil had more paraffin in it or so I was told. I over the years have torn apart several Ford engines with excess sludge. I think Ford quality control may have dropped the ball. The engine developed blow by early on and the PCV valve used engine vacuum to draw fumes out of the crankcase which meant the engine was burning it's own blow by. So if you were lazy and didn't change the oil at regular intervals you would get a carboned-up sludge infested engine. I never tore down an engine as bad as your Maverick. That engine is on another level for sludge. So loose or worn rings cause blowby and you don't see it because the intake vacuum sucks it in and burns it in the engine. You add paraffin in the oil and you don't change it that all equals sludge. I don't know how that engine would have ever ran with that much build up on the cylinder walls. It couldn't have. Maybe they were running straight drip gas in it from oil wells. There used to be lots of that going on back in the hills here in W.Va when gas prices skyrocketed.

A friend of mine had a late 70s Ford LTD (the big boats). V8 either a 302 or a 351 Windsor - regardless, it was given to his girlfriend because she needed a car. Had a hard time idling and when he checked the oil, this is where the surprises started. Hadn’t had an oil change in a very long time, we’re talking 10+ years and tens of thousands of miles (+ 25K). Pennzoil was the last oil used and would get topped off every now and then. When my friend pulled the valve covers off, it blew our minds that this car ran at all!! The entire inside of the valve covers were 100% oil mud like what you are seeing in this car. It was an absolute mind blowing thing to see🤯🤯🤯 It ran all the way up to when they attempted to flush the motor to get the mud out…. It seized and shot a rod out the side of the block. Free cars are not always the greatest thing 😒 but this video reminded me of that LTD.

I don't believe I've ever seen so much gunk in an engine. No wonder it wouldn't turn over. Would like to see the 351C in it but I wonder if there's enough room to fit it under the hood. It would make the Maverick scream if you could. Awesome video.

Yowzer, that puppy wasn’t pumping oil, it was ‘trying’ to pump bearing grease through the oil passages. I’ve seen this before, it ran out of lubricants and probably seized the top end. Definitely abused for sure. My vote is for a Windsor 351 since there are a ton of parts and support for them. Maybe even a 5 speed stick?

LOVE IT! Have not seen sludge that bad. Too bad the cost to rebuild would be 2 or 3 times the cost of a used replacement. 289 or 302 with turbo...😆😆😆😆

I bet that engine got one oil change and that was it. That's one for the record books.....wow!! You have to feel sorry for it in a way. No engine should have to endure that kind of neglect. 😪 .......I'd try to find another inline 6 or maybe a 302. 😎 Thanks for sharing, ya'll!!

Put a 302ci V8 in it with a T5 trans. You could do a complete rebuild on this motor because it is a 250ci. Six. Yes, they never changed the oil. That motor needs to be stripped completely and hot-tanked to get it all cleaned. You don't want to run that motor in that condition The cooling passages are probably all clogged with rust.

My thoughts exactly. There's an orange, small-bumper Maverick sitting at the local high-school. Hopefully, the kids don't destroy it but if it's ever up for grabs.... 302, 4 speed and 3.73's are waiting for it.

@@Sleeperdude You may try some toilet bowl cleaner with Sodium Hydroxide as the active ingredient. Basically industrial degreaser, but acidic and eats rust and grease... an older name for it is "Lye" LOL. The black & white bottle of Lysol Toilet Bowl cleaner I used on some bumper bolts completely rusted together on a 53 Chev, and overnight they were wrench tight and like new.

Considering the interest Wa had in drag racing, I say throw a mild 302 in it, nothing crazy, and use it to teach WaWa to drag race. I remember when my dad taught me in a f100 with a 302. Great memories and really teaches you to respect the power. Made me a better driver.

this looks like a good project to let Ralphie fabricate a manifold for a turbo 😁 and have it computer controlled dont these engines have low compression ratio? meaning you can give it big boost😅

I have heard of a engine that was worse than that for oil not changing. My grandfather took a car that the guy thought was done at 30,000 mi. This was in the '40s or '50s. He never changed the oil. And back then, you did it every thousand miles. They rebuilt the engine and the thing ran fine for many years.

I love the 351C idea. I am mostly a v8 kinda of guy. But a 300 6 cylinder isn't a bad choice. Build it up and you have lots of torque as well as speed. Of course I would like the 250 built back up as well. But I am the type of guy as well to work on anything regardless of money cost just because it is just old school. I don't have the money you have but I do enjoy keeping the old and odd stuff around too. So many options right now. But keep the Rocky Stomp power to a level that the kids can handle that much power later on. A car that everyone can enjoy and handle.

That engine would need to go a machine shop for a complete rebuild. Depending on what needs to be replaced apart from bearings shells seals etc. it could be a piggy bank with the squits. A good V6 or an inline 6 from a reputable source will probably save a lot of time, money and heartache but that's not what this channel is all about. Do what you think's best , the viewers will stay true whatever you decide.

Lol we tried sugar and all kinds of things in vehicles when i worked at a wrecker service, there is nothing that can go in the gas tank that will make it past the strainer in the tank, filter in the carb and still run good enough to do any damage to the engine…..worst thing we found was good ole Whole milk, it will plug the sock, pump, lines, injectors and regulator in less than 20 miles😂
