I left school in 87, but my brother and his mates got suspended from school because they were copying the Tango slapping advert, there were so many complaints from schools that they banned the advert and brought out the kisssing instead lol. Another thing to come from this advert, is when someone gets a really bad fake tan and it looks orange, we still say 'someone has been Tango'd'

I was inspecting a parade prior to being inspected by the O/C and I walked down the rear of each rank and proceeded to "Tango" anyone who was in any minor violation of uniform regs (not seriously, more in the spirit of lads being lads) but one of the more "precious" little sprogs decided this might be a bit scary and mean and got me stuck on... little bastard...

The idea of the orange tango man was to represent how the taste of orange flavour tango was as intense as a slap in the face. Same as having "oranges" yelled in your ear. And the voice overs, for our American friends, is a play on English football commentary during the 90s

Fun Fact 1: The deadpan co-commentator on the early orange man ads was former England footballer Ray "Butch" Wilkins. Not-so-fun-Fact 2: The deep voice saying "You know when you've been Tangoed" was legendary musician Gil Scott Heron. He was desperate for money due to his drug addiction and it was unfortunately one of the last things he did before he died.

I remember being at school, creeping up behind one of your mates on the playground, tapping them on the shoulder, and when they turned around, you give them a huge two handed slap and say “you know, when you’ve been Tango’d”. It became so popular, there were times you’d recognise when someone was about to get Tango’d, as you’d see a friend casually creep up behind someone with a mischievous look. We’d quietly say to one of our other friends, in our best Geordie accent, “Oooh, Tony! Would ya look at that” as we watched the hilarity unfold. 😂 Our generation were the reason that advert was taken off the air, and replaced with the one with the hand on the mouth and kiss.

Hiya I’m from the UK and some of these adverts got banned or change because a lot around children were going around slapping each other saying you’ve been tangled or shouting in your ears and you’ve been tangled and the British government didn’t like it so they made it got changed but these adverts are always so much fun to watch growing up. I think this was the late 80s early 90s and like you know, everybody knew that the tango man was his orange ball man went round slapping your role doing whatever but yeah the tango were fun. My adverts not really boring. Don’t get money that I really good to watch and enjoy and know a lot of stuff that UK adverts are good at is the Christmas adverts for the big stores. A lot of them are very emotional so I enjoy watching you and your other half tasting and to UK stuff we are lucky in this country because we do have quite a lot of good adverts and sense of humour shows keep up the good work and I am from East End of London just thought I’d let you know where I was in the UK and I love your accent, take care 💖🐩🐩💖👍👍🕊🌈🇬🇧 remember not to get tango ed🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡🧡

These ads seem really bizarre today, but the style was actually a good fit with some of the more surreal TV comedy that was popular in the UK at the time, stuff like Harry Enfield & Chums, Reeves & Mortimer and The Day Today. A lot of TV catchphrases went a kind of pre-internet version of viral, with people endlessly repeating them with their friends, and they were probably trying to copy that. It worked even better than they could have hoped. I was a 90's kid and can confirm that the craze of slapping eachother and saying 'You know when you've been Tango'd' went absolutely rampant in schools as soon as the ad came on air. The reason for the kissing advert was because there were so many complaints about the first version. It made them notorious and they got even more free advertising from the press coverage. The trouble was, the adverts became so popular that they had to keep on trying to think up new insane things to put in them and they became pretty hit and miss after a while.

I actually went to the Tango Strathclyde park event. Was a great time, rides, food stalls etc. The slapping Tango adverts got banned as kids kept doing it in playgrounds. Thats when the kiss and shouting adverts appeared. Youll notive the change in can showing they were later.

I remember the tango slap ads. I was at school when they aired, and all we did was go around double slapping other kids. They then discovered that some kids hearing was getting damaged because of the slapping. So they changed it to the hand over mouth kiss as they knew kids wouldn't do that.

The ad agency that did Tango was Howell Henry Chaldecott Lury. You should see their Maxell tapes 'into the valley' misheard lyrics commercial.

If someone tapped you on the shoulder in the early 90’s , you dare not turn around because of the tango man. Ear drums were burst.

I was at school for most of these tango ads, like someone else said, a few of em got banned, cuz of kids getting slapped and getting ear damage from being shouted in the ear. I remember our headmaster would walk on stage every other week, sighing, saying as theres another tango ad going around, DO NOT copy what they do on tv!! Wat a time to be a kid!!!

they had to change it to a kiss by the Tango Man as some children got burst eardrums when being Tango'd by their mates. In the add the man is slapped on the cheeks but some kids were slapping the side of the face and ears hard enough to injure the eardrums

That tango advert had kids slapping other kids faces across schools for literal decades after the advert was pulled. It was produced the year I was born and still in 2003 or 2004 it was still being done. It had such an effect on the British population, I got slapped so many times!

For clarification the tangoman kissing the guy in the ad as opposed to him slapping him was in response to parental complaints, because all the kids were going to school and slapping the sh** out of each other and screaming "you've been tango'ed" due to the original version of the advert. You have to love kids lol
