I remember being at school, creeping up behind one of your mates on the playground, tapping them on the shoulder, and when they turned around, you give them a huge two handed slap and say “you know, when you’ve been Tango’d”. It became so popular, there were times you’d recognise when someone was about to get Tango’d, as you’d see a friend casually creep up behind someone with a mischievous look. We’d quietly say to one of our other friends, in our best Geordie accent, “Oooh, Tony! Would ya look at that” as we watched the hilarity unfold. 😂 Our generation were the reason that advert was taken off the air, and replaced with the one with the hand on the mouth and kiss.

These ads seem really bizarre today, but the style was actually a good fit with some of the more surreal TV comedy that was popular in the UK at the time, stuff like Harry Enfield & Chums, Reeves & Mortimer and The Day Today. A lot of TV catchphrases went a kind of pre-internet version of viral, with people endlessly repeating them with their friends, and they were probably trying to copy that. It worked even better than they could have hoped. I was a 90's kid and can confirm that the craze of slapping eachother and saying 'You know when you've been Tango'd' went absolutely rampant in schools as soon as the ad came on air. The reason for the kissing advert was because there were so many complaints about the first version. It made them notorious and they got even more free advertising from the press coverage. The trouble was, the adverts became so popular that they had to keep on trying to think up new insane things to put in them and they became pretty hit and miss after a while.

😂😂😂 i had forgotten some of these. Thanks for the laugh. Your face was a picture JT. The good old days of the Tango slapping bans in schools across the country. The assemblies of schools gathered together with the head teachers seriously advising us not to Tango slap each other....which we obviously listened to. NoT lol

5:14 What surprised me about that advert is they first showed it a few days after the IRA bombed London.

Huh. It's been so long since that ad came out, but the first one had Simon Day as the colour-blind guy. If you want to see more of him, he was one of the mainstays of sketch show 'The Fast Show'.
