Rented 5 different apartments over 25 years in Chicago. Never did "Any" maintenance, not even change a light bulb that was any part of the apartment. When the light goes out in fridge, stove or overhead kitchen or bathroom. I called the maintenance department. If the air conditioner was not cooling. [Sometimes it only needed a filter]. I was not going to buy and change it myself. I called the maintenance department. I lived in very nice places. I expect High rent places to have responsive maintenance departments.

I think the "housewife" assumed the exchange of a light bulb on this projector/appliance would be akin to the exchange of a lightbulb in a refrigerator/appliance - a lot of people would not be afraid to naively take that on - but she was in error - with that said Mr. Nelson should have stressed the vulnerability of this appliance ESPECIALLY having a stream of renters assigned to its status.

It's amazing what the average person and housewife don't know or take for granted; even changing a headlamp bulb on your car, if you touch the bulb with your bare hands, it would drastically shorten the life of the bulb. It's always best to ask for some advice before you try anything technical that looks easy.

halogen bulbs get very hot, if you touch the bulb with a bare hand oil from your skin gets on the bulb and causes the bulb to hold in heat, this makes the bulb shatter. It's not hard to do as long as you don't touch the actual lamp part of the bulb

That's what professionals are for; repairing things at an expert level. It's why the back of most consumer electronics have _"Warning. Risk of electric shock. Do not remove covers or screws. No user-serviceable parts inside. Refer servicing to qualified service personnel."_ * In other words, if you lack the skills, experience or knowledge to fix something yourself when it fails or breaks, don't touch it. Instead call a professional (whether you own it or not), get a quoted estimate and proceed with them carrying out the repairs as necessary. *

I replaced projector lamps a couple of times at my old job... The instructions explicitly tell you not to touch the bulb. If they're replacing a bulb three times a year they're clearly doing it wrong. I had bulbs last 5 years plus and a couple of projectors. Of course I assume that's related to how many hours of usage each projector got. Maybe they were watching movies together 14 hours a day. Your skin has oils on it, so when you touch it with your bare hands, they leave fingerprint, residue, and oil on the glass. That oil eventually causes the bulb to not heat uniformly, with the heat concentrated in the oily spot. If you leave it on long enough, it just explodes.

I can understand that this is a REALLY nice projector and it is a nice way to attract tenants to rent his home because he has this cool theater room in the home, but if he's THAT concerned about a HOUSEWIFE changing a simple light bulb, then perhaps he needs to reconsider keeping the $3000 projector at his rental property. Personally, as a woman who has changed MANY light bulbs in my life, I find his assumption that women can't do this simple task to be sexist and insulting. Anything men can do, women can certainly do better.
@KittenChristy6 жыл бұрын
So wait, you are telling me that you already knew to change the lightbulb with gloves? Do you have previous experience with these machines or do you just use gloves to change all bulbs? Most people assume that if someone doesn't have professional experience doing something (as he pointed out, with fridge repair as an example) that people don't attempt to perform maintenance on it. That does not mean that the landlord should not put a fridge in the house for fear that if it needs repair that the inexperienced tenant will attempt to repair the broken fridge on their own. I like that you are offended by him being 'sexist' (He said housewife, not woman.) but then say 'women can do things better than men'. That is sexist, friend. You don't fight for your cause by advocating it to the other side (aka don't fight a fire with fire...). Also, I'm glad you can change a lightbulb. I'm sure you can also put gas in your car. That does not mean you are qualified to change a bulb in a CT machine nor does it mean you are qualified to fuel up a jet. Over exaggeration, I am aware, but my point is that you cannot say he is wrong. She did in fact break his $3k projector by not contacting a professional (Him). He did not say he could do it because he was a man, he said he could do it because of 10+ years of working with them at a past job of his. Her assuming that she was qualified to 'change a bulb' ended up with her breaking his projector, and instead of just suing her for the $3k, he nicely asked for half of a cheaper one, which she declined. She was completely in the wrong, and if I were the judge I'd of ordered her to pay the $3k. She was not remorseful for breaking someone else's things. Ignorance is not a good excuse. Also, side note, I am a housewife after working 7 years at a hospital. I am not anti-woman, nor anti-housewife. I am pro-equality. I feel men and women equal out in their own ways. I am just saying that most people hear housewife and do not tend to assume schooling. Stereotypically, women don't tend to work in maintenance. You cannot fault him for assuming she was not a professional, as she clearly was not. Get off that high horse of yours, you're not better nor worse than him so stop judging him.
