My Dad trained a lot of Dutch pilots in the beginning of WWII at Hawkins Field in Jackson, MS. in Stearman.h He was then transferred to Americus, GA to learn the C 47, tHE gave me and my older twin brothers all the sam graduation gift of him teaching us to flu or a car. One of me brothers took the flight lessons, the other brother and i took cars. He became a 43+ year LEO retiring as Assistant chief of the Criminal Investigation Division of our local PD. I went on to Photography school. I was also a private security operator in places the US didn't go... I did get a chance to fly with my dad in a Stearman something neither of my brothers never got that chance. Looking back 50+ years I should have taken flight lessons. That is a ride I will never forget, ooh and it was a fully aerobatic clip wing 650 HP Stearman, and he pretty much rung it out what a ride for an 8 year old! Still today nothing beats the sound of a radial at idle!

We had a Stearman when I was growing up in Ashland Oregon, Loved flying that Ol bird, had a 650hp Pratt and Whitney when we got it and Loved that engine but reduced HP to a 230HP Wright engine for less fuel burn and Dad was teaching aerobatics with the Stearman climb all day with the wright engine and she could still do 150Kts straight down!!!

When I was 16 an old WW2 army air corps pilot took me up in one of those Spearman’s and made several loops…that was quite exciting…

Especially clear with the red one; you don't start a radial, you wake it up.
