It can if the machine is set up for a heavy diamond point needle with a certain set up but I wouldn't recommend a side load bobbin for this operation. Go with a top load bobbin version. Lu-2810 Lu-1508NS

Yes you can. All depends on the density of the leather and the machine set up. The LU-1508NH uses the longer needle for heavier/thicker fabrics.

Hate the one I had! Bought a new one and 15-20 stitches out of the box later it jammed. The hook had to be replaced. I began sewing again with it but sewed @ 120 inches and it jammed again. Another new hook. It jammed a third and fourth time and needed a new hook each time. (Same bobbin!!!) I called Juki and they were adamant the 1508 was the best machine made and the problems I had with it were inconsistent with their product. Another new hook but this time it worked well for @ 3 months then another jam. But this time I took it to the local landfill and tossed it. Never Another Juki!!!
