Terry Norris was a great fighter when he used his boxing skills and combinations. He could move and stay out of range but still land blistering combinations. He was a machine with explosive speed and power He would get in trouble against big punchers when he got caught against the ropes or stood in front of them going toe to toe. He was so skilled offensively and such a great puncher that his ego would get the best of him at moments. He would land several combinations, stun his opponent, then stop moving and start head hunting. Jackson was a murderous puncher, one of the very hardest ever. Julian had a great career, but a lot of fighters were scared to fight him at his peak. It held him back a little despite the multiple world titles in multiple divisions..

I agree with your commentary of Terry Norris. In that time of boxing greats ( which i dont think we will see anything remotely close to the quality of boxers and power punchers from the 80s and 90s) Norris was a brilliant boxer. Unfortunately, in this fight, he made a terrible mistake when he got against the ropes, and got knocked out. You really are a boxing fan. The art of the sport has terribly gone down. Now we have a wild swinging, no boxing skills in Wilder, a average boxer in tyson fury, and Joshua? Devontay Davis hasnt really been tested yet in my opinion. I wonder what he would have looked like against the likes of sweet p pernell whitaker, felix trinidad, and list of other greats in that weight class. I really don't watch boxing anymore all like that (mostly you tube videos of fights these days) again due to the lack of quality boxers.

Damn. I thought Norris started the fight very well, super crisp. I did want to see his hands up a little more, a better guard in transition in and out of an exchange etc. The key here starts at 1:50 of the 2nd round, just after Norris escaped the corner and both fighters square-up top center of the ring by the ropes, Jackson on the attack... a few seconds later they move to the center of the ring, Jackson unleashes bombs: take note of the right uppercut Jackson throws. I'm sure this punch was landed because Norris' head snaps up plus you can hear it. That was a nasty punch that hurt Norris more than he showed it. Fantastic audio, I hear the gloves making contact as well as some grunts and groans. Seems pretty obvious Jackson is a hard hitter.
@christopherpeterson19910 жыл бұрын
I know, you watch this fight and it's like, no Terry don't let him push you to the ropes there's not enough room to escape his power shots when that happens and sure enough, BANG! down goes Terry. It hurt watching that right connect all these years later, just a huge punch. Hellish shots like that helped make Terry Norris neurologically who he is today....
@crawlFace10 жыл бұрын
Christopher Peterson I know, and totally heartbreaking story because it's easy to see the passion Norris has for boxing. I don't think he was an evil intent kind of fighter; I think he just really wanted to be one of the best. You said it, all these years later it does still hurt. Even the crowd atmosphere was intense, not just wild cheering. This does feel like the kind of fight that would haunt a boxer for a while or for the rest of their lives, especially in the sense that before the fighters got a chance to settle in it was just over in the blink of an eye. True, he officially got caught on the ropes. Got a lot of ghosts on them ropes, know what I mean lol.
@christopherpeterson19910 жыл бұрын
Yeah I saw a short profile of Terry Norris since boxing told him no more, I think the profile was like six years ago but he and his wife are doing some boxing-exercise hybrid training for people and he seems like a really nice guy. Kinda sucks though because you can definitely see he's got dementia pugilistica in a fairly advanced state. That's the worst, there's a documentary called "After the Last Round" which goes over boxers who've had brain injuries or dementia since their careers ended. It doesn't involve Terry Norris or Gerald McClellan or Michael Watson but it's a really good documentary, totally worth a look.

A few fighters out boxed Julian pretty comfortably at times, but that amazing power came to the rescue, against Terry and even more so against Herol Graham, i don't think i have seen before or after such one punch hitting power, mightn't be classed as an all time great by many, but number one in history for pound for pound power in his prime in my opinion

Julian Jackson is P4P the hardest puncher in boxing history. He knocked guys out cold. You could count to 100 on some of his one punch knockouts. Watch the way he knocks out Wayne Powell and Herol Graham...both of whom he knocked out while off balance.

Norris didn't see the punch coming. I didn't see it, to be honest. He was a very good boxer and quite a big puncher but Jackson could beat anyone who didn't have a legendary chin, to be honest. Mike McCallum and Gerald McClellan come into that category.
@BruceinFalkirk10 жыл бұрын
George Foreman - Who ever had McClellan on the deck, other than Nigel Benn? The G-Man took many thunderous shots to the head in his final bout and stayed on his feet until he went down on his knees in agony. He had an absolutely world class chin.
@BruceinFalkirk10 жыл бұрын
George Foreman Jackson did need to have him on the deck. Did you read my original comment? Also, McClellan himself said making the weight was absolute hell. He was training and fighting while dehydrated and that is extremely dangerous for any fighter.

Jackson was a specimen. I also would like to point out that contrary to popular belief, I believe the body shots that Jackson started landing in the 2nd round had an effect on Norris. Jackson also started closing the distance and being able to better deal with Norris' speed. I also believe that Norris could have and should have competed at welterweight. Terry was a small jr. welterweight. Remember Norris came in at 149lbs when he fought Taylor. I had a chance to talk to Jackson, only for a minute, after his a last fight. A lost to former lightweight contender Tony Jones on May 24th 1998. Jackson said that if he got ko'ed out by a former lightweight, who wasn't a puncher at that weight, it was time to quit. To my surprise, Jackson was smaller than I thought he'd be. He was at best 5'9". I don't know why fighters seem to be listed taller than they really are. Roy Jones was listed at 5'11" and even 6'. He was no more than 5'10". I'm 6'1" and I towered over Jones. Tommy Hearns, however, was one fighter that I met that I had to look up to. Hearns is listed at 6'1". I would say at least 6'2". His shoulder height seemed to be a few inches higher than mine. Hearns', unlike Mike Tyson, head doesn't contribute to his height.

J. Jackson was easily the hardest hitting Junior Middleweight of his day. The only one that was a better puncher than him within 20 years of his time was Thomas Hearns. I don't think anyone before or since had the flat out KO crushing power of Tommy Hearns. The guy hit like a mac truck and if you were on the long end of his right hand it was good night Charlie. Just one dude who was tall, long armed but could crack like no other before or since... and everyone knew it! J. Jackson was a nice second place...but still not quite the cracking power of Tommy Hearns when he extended his punches.

Gotta give you a thumbs-up that. However he hit Marvelous Marvin Hagler and got that hand broken... Other than that, it WAS "Good NIGHT."
@IanBillen10 жыл бұрын
MrBigraw Well we can disagree on that. Jackson was one heck of a puncher... but to be on the end of the TM right hand ..you stood no chance. Mr. Hagler knew that goin in. Hagler would of been stopped on cuts from the outside if he would of boxed Hearns. Hagler knew to take Hearns out you must go at him and keep "inside"... (even then you were askin for it. Hearn has uppercuts and hook that would take you out too...) but the jab would slice you and the right would end you. Hagler knew he could take Hearns if he fought him in the respect that he did... and he certainly did take him in ..well.. "The War". Fellas.. we can all agree on this...: "Round 1"!! nuff said ha.
