“By making the pastorate into an office you can lose the priesthood of all believers” I recognized this as a new believer over 30 years ago and was always discouraged for questioning the status quo. I believe this IS a major issue. Thanks, Julie, for bringing it up.

I may have missed this: grief and loss responses to proposed changes diverge widely - one wants nothing else to change because of the severity of the trauma; another wants to change everything so as to paper over the pain of the past. Pausing to name the loss helps both.

Not a fan of the phrase "if it's hysterical, it's probably historical" for a number of reasons. One of these reasons is the history of the use of the term hysteria to gaslight, subjugate and control within the context of gendered violence. This phrase reflects a concept that is incredibly frequently used by perpetrators of intimate partner violence to gaslight their victims who have a history of childhood trauma (i.e. a perpetrator victimising their partner and then claiming that her reaction is out of proportion and that the issue is that she's had prior trauma that's been triggered).

I’ve shared about abuse from my husband with other believers and they won’t acknowledge the abuse coming from my spouse and insist that it must be past trauma from my parents that is upsetting me when I’m telling them about specific abuse and neglect from my spouse. It’s probably because they don’t want to have to confront my spouse who attends the church with me but it’s so harmful and I refuse to go to church anywhere that is like this now. I’ve definitely been treated as if I’m hysterical and that there is nothing to be upset about. If there is something to be upset about it’s from something other than what I’m saying it’s from.

A sister in Christ presents a compelling, detailed, compassionate perspective for the health of the Body of Christ and the response is that she shouldn't do that because she's a woman? 🤔🙄 If not for Jesus, we're doomed. Great conversation on a topic that, until you know, how can it be explained? I would likely not believe my story, except I lived it. There was a season where it was like an awkward piece of furniture that just didn't fit anywhere. If you're in the middle of it, keep walking through it. Healing comes. It just takes time and it takes the time it takes. Julie Roys was one of the first lights that came in this season of darkness. I'm thankful more people are talking and not keeping secrets. May light continue to be shed into the corners. The Church is not a business. The Church will never be a business and as long as it is treated like it is, sheep are going to continue to be wounded. Here's to speaking up and into these stories, that the multitudes would be healed.

No, you’re right. While I love this podcast and appreciate Roys’ work as well as the many women in ministry, Christ’s command comes first. Any theologically trustworthy woman will not pursue the pulpit, not because she isn’t capable but because she listens and does what the Lord says.

Church. what a waste of time. They [the world] will know you are Christians by the love you have for one another. Only applies if you are rich and/or are willing to climb up the pastor's rear end. Divorced, older male? We don't want to know you. For over 15 years after I was divorced, I went to church every week. So often treated like a piece of trash, week after week, after week. One Sunday morning, I was about to get ready for church, stopped and said to myself, no, I can't do this anymore. PASTORS- You're speaking about pastors not having the training. Are you serious? They are the major problem. First and foremost, as Christians we do not need training on how to treat people. We have the Holy Ghost, and He convicts me if I treat someone the wrong way, so surely that would apply to all believers? Again, why do pastors need training? are they exempt from being decent, caring people? No way, it starts at the top. Pathetic pastors, filters down through the congregation, not all, but the vast majority follow their lead. Result- they have their own little groups and basically ignore those who do not fit into their requirements. I've never looked for a perfect church, but how incredibly sad it is to see how those on the outer are treated. Takes its' toll on a person.
