As a starting Pyro main, I also want this fixed, this is downright stupid. It surpassed OP and this makes even less sense. ...than airblasting projectiles behind you. Like, I know TF2 was meant to be playable on potato PCs, but come on it's not Pentium where if you could cut down on a calculation you should've. What on earth was going through the devs' heads? Just check against a cone.

pre jungle inferno airblast is quite interesting. The Airblast really only takes effect if the airblasted object or models are in the area in which the green box and blue cone overlap(with a few minor hickups here and there like behind the pyro). After jungle inferno just seems silly at that point, whatever is in the box is just airblastable.

A lot of detection boxes are giant cubes that don't rotate. Projectiles, melee hit boxes, flame particles, throwables. collision boxes (important due to map geometry generally being axis-aligned)

My understanding is that since collision detection gets more expensive the more objects that need to be check, this globally oriented kind of shape is used to save resources, and then if needed more precise checks sre msde with shaped roughly within the shape, like how hitscan attacks check first for the players collision hull and only then for the diferent hitboxes. As far as I can tell, however, making old airblasts box big enough to fully comtain the cone regardless of rotation and using the cone for both players and projectiles would result in the intended "consistent cone" mechanic without being too expensive.

@@cerocero2817 my read on it is that the cone doesn't actually exist. the only hitbox is the, well, box, and then the game iterates through all valid entities in the box and checks if they're enemy aligned and airblastable. then it checks if they're a player or not. if they're not, it just blasts them then and there. if they are, it performs some additional calculations involving getting the difference between the pyro's view angle and the angle from the pyro to the enemy, and _then_ it blasts them if that difference is less than a certain threshold so, the cone in this video is just a mesh that represents those calculations _for this video,_ not something that shows that there's a conical hitbox that's just not used for projectiles for whatever reason. subsequently, there isn't some specially shaped hitbox that's already doing those calculations anyway - so using the cone _would_ involve using more processing time every time a pyro pressed m2 a _significant_ amount of processing time? honestly, probably not even in the most extreme circumstances ... in 2021. back in 2008, however, it was probably quite a bit more of a valid concern. as far as why they went the complete _opposite_ direction with the update despite the fact that basically everyone playing should now be on far stronger hardware? my guess is that it's just straight-up gamefeel. by the time jungle inferno dropped, pyros would've had _nine years_ to form a feel for how airblast could reflect projectiles in a wide """cone""" in """front""" of them, so actually implementing the narrow cone would've made it feel like they just _broke_ the reflect hitbox, and even a far wider cone would've had that problem ( after all, it wouldn't catch projectiles _to the side_ of the pyro, which actually acts as a pretty significant amount of _lag compensation_ when you think about it in actual gameplay ). so instead, they just decided to drop the cone entirely so that airblasting players was the same as airblasting projectiles, and to expand the height of the hitbox so that projectiles coming from vertical angles wouldn't mysteriously require several times more accurate timing than those coming straight at you and, hey, it's _technically_ an optimization, so ... ?

Honestly that's like my big thing too. Pyro isn't powerful as you said, he's just annoying to play against because he's quite literally brainless. You run around spamming whatever buttons with a half of an idea of what you're doing and the jank will take care of it for you. It's why I voted Heavy back in the day because I knew voting Pyro wouldn't make Valve get rid of the jank they'd just make it worse.

I'm just a Pybro and a Bomber in MvM. Being a Pybro's deceptively hard, even with Scorch Shots because there can be more than one Spy (Usually 2-4 at once), and then Ubërcharge Soldier and Demo suddenly pops up out of nowhere while Engie's dead/distracted/respawning/AFK/dying. Being a Bomber (Read: Gas Passer) ain't an important role. It's just enough to stop hordes, but not enough to deal with giant robots. I may "replace" Demo and Sniper with it, but it can also means they can deal with the more important targets. Edit: Pyro's better as Support.

It's just Valve has it so none of the actually challenging stuff is required in any meaningful way. Unlike say, a Sniper where having a bad one can be crippling, you'll be just an effective Pyro running around WM1ing people as you would doing some crazy Detonator jumps or Combo Pyro Crits.

To be honest, the main thing that annoyed people about the old airblast was the reserve shooter, which got changed anyway. The new airblast actually prevents you from airstrafing, so if you get blown upwards, it's more of a 'stun' than the old one ever was.

Since the hitbox seems to be alined with the map grid and not the player for some reason there is no reliable range with the thing, depending on you angle with the map the htiboxwill be different (from the player's point of view) , odd choice since tracking the players angle wouldn't come naturally to most, making some airblast more luck than skill

@@VerbDoesStuff I'm saying that the hitbox is different relative to player depending on what direction they are looking at since it aligns with the map rather than with the player, so say, an airblast fired to the north would hit different areas than an airblast fired to the nort-west, these diferences in effect being tied to something that most people ignore while playing(what direction you are looking at relative to the map) make the airblast somewhat unpredictable, specially since, like showed above, in some of the orientations the airblast reaches behind the pyro. This all makes it so that some airblasts actually connect not due the skill of the players, but due to a variable neither of them acknowledge or even is aware of

It does. That box is deceptively small. Considering projectile speed, reaction time, whenever the enemy decides to shoot a rocket or what have you, and the general chaos of the game means timing is surprisingly difficult. It’s just under the extremely controlled environment it looks rather unskilled.

Projectile-based. A bunch of hitboxes come out of the flamethrower.

Like Delta said. The projectiles have a bunch of little hitboxes whose direction are influenced by the Pyro’s movement. A Pyro moving forwards will have more range than a Pyro standing still, and a Pyro moving backwards can drag the hitboxes back over eachother since the fire also moves backwards with them.

While the cube _looks_ large, a standard rocket moves at 1100 units a second. For it being a 256^3 cube, you only have about a quarter of a second to time your airblast at optimal range. It's why you can't just spam it and deny all projectile spam, even after it got it's height extended post-Jungle Inferno (which they probably did so that it wasn't possible for a rocket to skirt right above the airblast box awkwardly when the Pyro was aiming in a direction that _looked_ like it should've reflected). The only problem I see is that they didn't move where the box was positioned after they made it larger, so the Airblast starts to become more of a radial pushback than a focused blast...

The fact that the airblast hitbox doesn't rotate with the pyro really makes it inconsistent. If the player is facing diagonal with the world-plane the cube not rotating makes it so the pyro has longer airblast range at the far corner directly forward from the pyro, and has less ability to airblast to his sides.

It's funny how in the Pyro update when they "fixed" Pyro's mechanics they actually made them even more broken. In his current state, pyro is very easy to play and very hard to fight. It's not fun.

Green box indicates if the player is in or no but the green box also tells the blue cone if someone touched the cone they will fly and apply de buff (hidden: user cant move unless on the ground)
