I brought my Steve Vai Ibanez back to the guitar shop after I brought it home, plugged it in, and it couldn't do what Steve's does.

A few years ago Bill Sheehan and the original Talas had a reunion concert in Niagara Falls, NY. So many young kids (teens and twenties), came out, just to see him. My younger brother is good friends with them, so I helped roadie for them. It was a hell of a show and of course Bill had to light it up on his base.

Steve vai will always be under rated. His genius is not yet fully comprehended in our era. i was raised on his licks. One of very few guitarists who can play in any style and sound like a unique legend within any genre of music he plays yet within any style still have something of his own uniqueness shine through that is completely identifiably his sound. And total a gent. I'd love a david lee roth band reunion that was the form i liked him best, i guess because of nostalgia.

Bob, listen man, you don't know what you're talking about. This drummer is pretty sick. They're playing at over 160 BPM which is furiously fast and he didn't miss one single note, not even a grace note. Some of his quad fills and use of double bass is sensational. Also he mixes up styles, especially at 2:50 he goes funky and syncopated out the a$$. Listen man, it's a guitar show...he's not there to steal the show. peace.

@@adama2511 Yes, their Planet-X project. I agree that was an amazing band, with many great guitar/bass solos. But I am referencing the factor of a four guitar solo including Vai, McAlpine, Sheehan, and Weiner. One of the best guitar displays I have ever seen, or heard. And still, I do agree that Planet-X is probably more phenomenal than Dream Theater, and so many other progressive-rock bands. Tony Is a true guitar god. I've been listening to him since M.A.R.S. back in the 80's. Another amazing band. Check them out if you haven't yet heard of them.

I kidd you not...there was a guy who always came to our little Rock shows in Rochester,Mn. at the Northstar bar and drank the most, showed the most support, and rocked the hardest. Never knew he played bass or anything. Then, one day, another band hired him as their new bassist and he blew my mind! Yes...drills with picks mounted on them and everything! His idol was Billy Sheehan,of course. And,no crap..his name is ,Billy, too, with a similar sounding last name! Blows my mind, the talent in this world.

I saw this G3 show out in Lincoln NE back about 2003 ?? it was inside and a lot smaller venue ! This would have been outrageous ! Tony MacAlpine , Sheehan, Vai, is it Chad Smith on Drums? and I forget the 3rd G player - sorry dude ! Awesome Show! Thanks for the upload !

The 4 way single note exchange is unreal, and the first time the rhythm is EXACT! super super cool.... whoa. Sheehan is unbelievably fast for playing on bass strings, Macalpine is a robot, (i cant remember Steves backup guitar player's name) but he has gotten a lot better!, and of course Steve Vai is not actually human. Amazing amazing stuff, woulda been so cool to see it live!! Yes how can anyone not like this....

I would like to see Rocky George play with Steve Vai. He’s the guitarist from suicidal tendencies. Also, Joey Satriani would be good with Steve Vai or Yngwie Malmsteen.

What a lot of people don't get is that VaI is a pioneer. He helped Joe Satriani get signed and kicked the door down allowing a lot of rock instrumental guitarists to get through. Before the Passion and Warfare album there were no solo artists outside of the Jazz scene. Love him or hate him any one that has a career as a solo guitarist owes Steve. I discovered him when he was in Alcatrazz.

You have some wrong information there sir... Joe Satriani actually taught Steve Vai how to play when they were in their teens.. Vai didn't even know how to string his first guitar.. so he brought it to Joe. Joe actually put out Surfing with the alien in 1987 three years before Passion and warfare came out in 1990. so JOE is the actual pioneer. This is all pretty common knowledge in the guitar world. also, Joe created his own label so Vai didn't help Joe with that either. So pretty much your entire post was incorrect..lol.

@matrixx29 He was referring to when Steve took Not of this Earth to Cliff Cultreri and helped Joe get signed, nothing to do with who taught who guitar dude. Joe and Steve both released their first musical efforts in 1984. Steve with Flex-able and Joe with his first E.P.

There's obviously the greatness of Vai on guitar, but Billy S on bass is also one of those rare musicians who is on another level. Steve and Billy go back to the 80s when David Lee Roth was smart enough to realize that he needed something more to fill seats when he went solo. Roth would actually leave the stage for unusually large chunks of time and the crowds ate up the long duels between Steve and Billy each night. There's a video of one of those concerts from the Big Hair Era. The only other bass player I've personally seen play who is at Billy's technical level was Jaco Pastorius back in the 70s. Again, I'm only talking about those I've seen play, so be nice.
