I have read those stats before on numbers of new clothes bought per year and find it mind-boggling every time! 🤯50+ new items in a year?! My usual purchases are nowhere near that even if I count like... a pair of socks as "two items." I did a bit more shopping in 2022 because of a career change, but even then... not nearly that much. Lately, I've been working on ensuring anything I buy is made as sustainably as possible and, especially, that it doesn't emit microplastics (ie. no polyester, nylon, or acrylic), as well as reducing microplastics by air-drying on a clothing rack / line more and using a dryer less.

They are absolutely terrifying numbers, that’s for sure! I thought I bought a lot new, but seeing that average in Australia was so shocking. I definitely know people who buy large amounts from Kmart/Shein/Temu at a time knowing that they’ll only get a handful of wears out of each item before buying more. Which explains the very low price tag per item - AUD$13!!! Honestly, I think that almost concerned me more than the number of clothes, just highlighting how much we have devalued the resources and labour that go into making and distributing clothes. Scary stuff for sure. :(

@@KateyOneMoreTimeyup, 100% -- how much can workers possibly be being paid when clothes are that cheap? Not much. The high cost of low cost stuff.

My aversion to fast fashion was the on ramp I took to sewing, and then embroidery, and then hand spinning and now weaving! Now I have my own design book for my Etsy shop... :D

Thank you for addressing fashion and consumerism. I think when I don’t have quality items that I’m happy with, I do continue to buy whether it’s new or secondhand trying to find those items that fit and I’m happy with. This video made me think of strategies to get a wardrobe that I love. To make very conscious purchases of items that fit, that are comfortable, function-able, and I feel good about. This video has motivated me to plan an inventory of my clothing and only keep items that I really feel great about. I can’t appreciate what I have that is working for me if I have a bunch of stuff that isn’t.

I’ve definitely found having an inventory (in my case through Indyx) so helpful in being more intentional with the purchases I do make. I hope it gives you a sense of freedom and control! ❤️

And also, I feel so old, dying older items. Like trimming a tarot deck to give it new life. :-)

I’ve been trying to do this challenge in 2024. It’s been a little tricky as my body has changed so I had to replace most of my wardrobe but I’ve been successful so far and am currently at 3 (excluding underwear as I had none that fit so it felt unfair to include them). All 3 items are “pajaymas”, 2 pairs of Bamboo yoga pants from BAM and one pair of linen blend shorts from Marks & Spencer’s (not the best brand, but my mum bought them for me and I did need sleep shorts so I choose to keep them and asked her to check with me before buying things in the future). I know without the challenge I would have bought more as I was anxious about not having enough clothes that fit but the challenge really pushed me to search secondhand apps for items instead, so even if I go a little over this year it’s been useful.

Wow I’m so inspired by you! My body changing has definitely resulted in my over buying in the past, so to hear how intentional you’ve been during that time is just so amazing. And love hearing that even when the exact number might change, the spirit of the challenge is still alive and well! Such a great reminder. Thank you!! ❤️❤️❤️

Hi Katey, Just wondering about your left hand and the partial mitten on it. Is it an injury or a fashion accessory. It's the first time I see this so I hope it's ok to ask. That is a fantastic sweater.
@nmw-sweet5 ай бұрын
It's an injury. I can't remember if the mitten functionally reduces pain for her at this point, or if it is mainly a reminder to her to be careful of that hand.
@KateyOneMoreTime5 ай бұрын
Hey Butterfly!! ❤️ Totally okay to ask! I injured my hand pretty badly in late 2022. I still experience quite a lot of pain, which can be exacerbated by the cold. So I wear a glove most days, especially now we’re in winter, just to keep it warm and help manage some of that pain. ☺️

When I was a kid, my mum was in charge of the donation bins for one of the big charities, everything we owned that wasn't socks or underwear came from those bins as she could buy 1kg for 50c. I am very aware of the rubbish people dump on charities because of my upbringing. People think I'm a snob because I don't buy clothes from op shops, but honestly it's just a trauma response 😂 my current favourite brand is Snag Tights, I love their products and they seem to be in line with their values, which align with mine. I do mostly buy from Big W because I'm on the pension and they sell Care Bears stuff. I wear my clothes to death.

It’s so interesting how different all of our experiences are! Growing up, almost all of my clothes were made by my Grany because she was a great sewist and after Dad broke his neck we couldn’t afford clothes. So when I was 15 and got my first job, op shops felt like such a novelty! I have some snag tights, too. They’re my favourite that I’ve ever found - actually fit, are comfy, and don’t tear on the first wear!! And I’m a firm believer that it’s the clothes we will wear and wear and wear that are most sustainable, regardless of where they come from. ❤️

So many thoughts! ‘Firstly, I’ve been loving the clothing content lately Katey. Your wardrobe is fun and funky and it’s great to see the joy it gives you to put stuff together. If you aren’t familiar with the KZbinr, Leena Norms, she has been doing ‘a year of make do’ where she doesn’t buy any new clothes whatsoever and if she wants something new she has to make it. It’s been interesting to watch her journey. Ive been on a similar journey to you. Seriously cutting down new purchases and seeking more ethical companies. Shoes are incredibly difficult to find. This year I have only made about 6 new purchases, which I’m really proud of. However I don’t necessarily follow that strict formula for my son, which I can’t tell if it’s hypocritical because my consumption is still similar to when I used to just purchase for myself. But we’ve been lucky, my son has had access to a mostly secondhand wardrobe because he’s got a cousin a year older than him…so purchases have definitely been minimised. op shopping is difficult! I struggle with pants, short and skirt and I’m not plus sized. I love love love those Lucy and yak pants on you. They look fabulous. Finally I was wondering would you be interested in sharing a list of the ethical brands you have shopped from in the past?
@KateyOneMoreTime4 ай бұрын
Thanks so much! I’m glad you’ve been liking the videos, I’ve been having fun making them! :) I love Leena! Been watching her for years! And yes, her year of make do is so amazing. I’m slowly (very slowly with my injured hand!) learning to knit so who knows, maybe I’ll be able to make my own jumpers one day! And thank you for sharing some of your own journey. 6 new pieces so far this year is great! Obviously I don’t have kids, but I presume it must be difficult considering how much and quickly they grow. Sounds like you’ve been so intentional, which is inspiring to read. I’ve never had much luck with shoes at op shops, but can you believe I’ve found a couple of pairs from my favourite brand second hand online?! That’s one area I’d really like to move to second hand because I don’t want to be buying new leather, but I do find leather shoes last so much longer. Not sure if I’ve just been lucky this year! As for the brands I like shopping from, I’m happy to share. Just want to disclaim that none of these brands are perfect, some are definitely better than others. They’re all small Australian brands who seem to make smaller, intentional production a priority and have some commitments regarding ethics and sustainability. Not at all saying they’re off the hook for further improvements. :) Some of my favourites are Variety Hour, Obus, Jericho Road, Mama Movement (loved their swimwear which is now discontinued!), Yevu, and I haven’t shopped at them but looked, Magpie Goose and aulieude. Although their focuses aren’t sustainability, but other social issues, I have also supported Homie and Clothing the Gaps in the past for more casual clothes and tshirts. I’m sure there are others, although finding brands whose values I like that also stock anything above a size large is not easy! Anyway, thanks so much for the thoughtful comment 🥰
