I don't think she loves him either but I don't think she realizes that she doesn't love him. She was raised with a utility=affection parent/child relationship and never got to see a healthy romantic relationship. I think she thinks she loves Tom. I think she may want to actually love him. But I don't think she's even capable of actually loving a human being. Tom just helps her have a sense of power and normalcy. He's a constant for her which is why she'd rather strong-arm him into an open relationship and have a sense eif unwarranted joy st the thought of having freedom once he's sent to prison rather than just leave him. Plus the idea of a healthy relationship is a sense of pride for her so she can compare herself to her siblings and blatantly differentiate herself from Logan. She thinks she's better than them but she doesn't realize that she isn't.
@MyaB19862 жыл бұрын
I don't think she does. In fact I don't think any of the Roy's children can experience love and it all stems from getting none from either parent. Just think about it. Kendall, he craves. He wants, he doesn't love. He tells Rava he loves her but he contacts her when he's most vulnerable and weak. Same with Naomi. Shiv feels inferior so she uses her men to feel superior to them. She openly says to Tom and her ex that she's better than them. And Roman is an open and shut case. I think he suffers from Oedipus complex with some masochism sprinkled in.

I think Shiv "loves" Tom in the same way a kid loves a puppy. They might think they really, really love their puppy, but once they realize how much work it takes to care for a puppy--they get annoyed they can't just have the fun parts without the responsibility. However, she stubbornly doesn't want to admit she doesn't care cuz then she'd be a "bad" person. The two ppl who "loved" Shiv (her parents) also low-key scare her because she knows they will be cruel and disappointed in her. Tom was a safe way for her to get love without feeling threatened. She loved him because he was the perfect person to give her things like affection, support, admiration, and the occasional laugh but she isn't IN love with him; she's just attached. Or she was attached, now I think she is just incapable of being honest cuz then she would have to face the fact she treated Tom bad. What she really needs or needed was to find someone who was comfortable being open from the start and someone she could be like, "Hey, I might not love you but I appreciate you and I want support in my life". At the same time, I do think it's important to note that Tom did propose to Shiv when she was handling a crisis. So I am sympathetic of the fact that sometimes you do the wrong thing when you're not in the right head space and can't just Ctrl Z so you just go along with things and hope they turn out okay. I like how Tom was always the under-the-radar smart guy. You don't see it because of how the family treats him like dirt, especially his wife. He's often the butt of jokes. But if you look closely, he's been doing his job despite all this, and he's been consistently making smart moves through all of this.

In the end, the show was the story of Logan’s ruined soul bringing about the final ruination of the kid’s souls and the end of the Roy dynasty. All the kids are destroyed, completely, by the last scene. They believe their failure to hijack their father’s shitty legacy from each other should be the final arbiter of their value as humans. They judge themselves, and pass sentence. Roman sentences himself to the bottle, Kendal to the sea, and Shiv to a life under the thumb of the guy she once pushed around. None of it needs to be this way. They each have money and resources and health. They’ve been taught that success in their father’s arena is the only success. Without it, there’s only oblivion.

Shiv is undoubtedly an awful wife but Tom isn't necessarily lovelorn as he seems to be. On the night of their wedding , when she asks for them to have an open relationship, he gets taken aback initially but then right after at the summer place he is all cheery and happy when Shiv reveals to him that he might get the top job in ATN. He seems to be genuinely happy with his wife at that moment. Their relationship is essentially just that. An arrangement of sorts where they just strategize together. And I think Tom truly began to resent her not because of her cheating and the psychological abuse that she subjected him through but because he felt that she would leave him out of the loop later as she was aligning herself with her brothers. Remember Tom was really concerned when Shiv told him that Logan assured her that she would get the top job because Tom felt threatened by his position Knowing that his wife is very selfish and could actually cost him his job if need be. That's all that is in this show. Desire and struggle for power and money. So I don't think so that Tom was a naive, love sick puppy who was hurt by Shiv. He is as scheming as the rest of them.

Not to argue with the main thesis but it's a little bit more complex. Shiv did work, behind the scenes, to stop Tom from going to jail. In season two when Logan asks her who should be sacrificed she tells him please not Tom. She was the one who made the difference and why Kendall was chosen by Logan. Also when having the affair, she really tried to resist, it's not like she was careless about it. Not to make it out good or something, just to say that there is a lot more complexity to the character and to their relationship.

It’s the cycle of abuse that keeps repeating. Shiv was heavily emotionally abused by Logan and to a lesser extent her mother, there is nowhere for her to model healthy relationships after. ok interesting analysis. But my guess would be that Logan leaves Tom by the wayside at some point in season 4 (even if Logan rewards loyalty, he also turns on people fast), Tom's too much of a perennial nearly man to finally make it. In addition, Logan's most important child is Waystar Royco, and if Matsson is calling the shots, why keep Tom in a senior position? I could be wrong but to me its not so obvious he's made the right choice, with this option the risks are higher, even if the rewards initially might be higher too...

i disagree with Sam. Tom is becoming a killer. He can finally feel the grasp of power. He's nowhere near Kendall's level of devotion/hatred for Logan, so that makes him a stronger player in the field. Now that the tables have turned, and he's proven himself to be useful and diligent, he's not only on the winning side, he's in the winning play. Why keep tom in a senior position? Puppeteering. Nepotism at its finest. But as the phrase goes "friends make great enemies", so he should be kept in place in case he starts playing both sides. Logan never loses and having a backdoor into the company can be of use to him. I seriously doubt he's only selling because it's a good deal. He was smiling. Smiling is no good. Or The Lion has gone mad. Cousin Craig learned quickly how to backstab relatives and associates, going as far as entering a criminal corporate conspiracy. It's all very relative. I wouldn't say Tom wins the game, i have no idea who will. Next season may be the last, something has to happen and it will happen. I'm looking forward to seeing what comes out. Have a good one!

I agree Tom's betrayal was probably the right choice for him and made total sense but Shiv did choose him last season. She threw her brother under the bus for Tom, a decision I don't think he was totally aware of. Sure Shiv probably would've pushed for Ken to take the fall regardless but she did stick her neck out ever-so-slightly and asked her dad not to pick Tom (a decision that probably partially also proved to Logan she also wasn't a "killer" and wasn't fit for the top job either). However she has been consistently awful to Tom so the choice still makes sense.

Not out of love for sure. She didn't want her " property " to be lost! And look bad infront of anybody who knows her that her little pet went to prison. It would just hurt her pride. And Tom was shocked, but played along. It was next morning he brought it up and expressed his worries about what she said, ( Not loving him, and him being with her knowing she DOESN'T love him, she was out of his league e.t.c. ) she got nervous & said he shouldn't take seriously what she said during sex !! @@meghanelaraby277 "Not out of love for sure. She didn't want her " property " to be lost!" Odd interpretation. I always took it as her guilt for marrying him knowing she wasn't capable of being a faithful wife. He still stuck around after that though - IMHO he's always been a lot more mercenary than a lot of commentators think. Look at how obsessed he was with trying to curry favor with Logan in the very first episode only for Logan to give Tom's watch gift away immediately to cover Roman's foibles. If he wasn't mercenary he would have simply trusted Shiv's influence to get him what he wanted, even Shiv was basically telling him it doesn't matter what you get him.
@presterjohn90882 жыл бұрын
@@mnomadvfx i think its spot on. Shiv didn't stick up for Tom in season 2 out of love but because she didn't want to lose whatever odd sense of security and love Tom gives her. She did it for purely selfish reasons, not for any real love for Tom. Name one altruistic thing Shiv has ever done for Tom in any season. The entire reason she helped Tom get a top job at Waystar was to have someone who was slavishly devoted to her high up in the company. She started off saying that she didn't care about the top job and would help Tom land it but it soon flipped and she wanted it for herself. Tom, as usual, went along with her and they were married despite her affairs while they were engaged and her wedding night ambush. Season 2 had Shiv initially saying Tom would be a good sacrifice and only changed her mind when he finally stood up to her and talked about what life without her might be like. In Season 3 despite Shiv allegedly standing up for Tom he is still facing jail. In fact with Kendall refusing to be the sacrifice it's all but assured. He is now Terminal Tom. She doesn't show the slightest bit of concern for his plight and actually seems annoyed that he talks about prison so much. Then she finally drives the dagger home by mocking Tom in an intimate moment and telling him she doesn't love him even tho he loves her. The next day she doubles down on her statement and when he says her comments hurt him she gaslights him, saying you can't ask for dirty talk and then get upset when you get some (even tho he didn't actually ask, she did). She tells him "even tho I don't love you, I love you, you know that right?", whatever the hell that means. Tom gives her a final chance to show that she has any feelings for him at all when she calls him to tell him the kids are on their way to stop the sale and to get the news arm of Waystar ready. Tom asks her where he fits in and as usual she gives him some non-answer. He realizes that there is nothing left between them, if there ever was, and decides to look out for himself since it's now crystal clear that Shiv doesn't give a damn about him. Tom is a social climber and a sycophant but he loves Shiv. She kept abusing him a little more each season while destroying any reason dj he had to protect her. If she hadn't made such a point of telling him she didn't love him in season 3 I think he would still be sitting, miserable, in her shadow. I think it's far, far too early to know just how much this will help Tom tho. If the company has been sold he will have to fight for his job. Does he have an actual deal with Logan or does Logan just owe him? There's no way to know. Shiv is a dangerous enemy to have so who knows if this turns out well for Tom. I will say that staying with Shiv in such an abusive marriage would only have driven him crazy. At least this way he has a chance at getting ahead. Shiv is a dead end, as incapable of real love as her parents and siblings.
