I’ve never considered Discord for teaching lessons. Having a server maybe for all your students and such. That actually sounds fairly interesting.

Darn you, daylight savings! I'm dying about your poop story! I teach piano in my home. If I desperately have to go, I tell them to keep playing because I can still hear them. 😄
@JustAnotherFlutist6 жыл бұрын
LOLLLL!! I've totally told my students to keep going too, but that time, I only had poop on my mind and just left after excusing myself 😂
@MusicIsARainbow6 жыл бұрын
Hahaha! Sometimes my students have to poop in the middle of their lessons. One boy comes over with his brother and even though his brother is first, he always tells me he has to use the bathroom just as his lesson starts. I've started quoting Arnold Schwarzenegger from Kindergarten Cop. "THERE IS NO BATHROOM!" He also pees all over the toilet and doesn't put the seat up when he goes. Maybe I should do Skype lessons so he can pee all over his own toilet/floor/wall.
@JustAnotherFlutist6 жыл бұрын
OH NO, REALLY?! 😱 And then YOU have to clean it up!!!! Oh gosh!!!!
@MusicIsARainbow6 жыл бұрын
Yes, but a friend recently gave me a sign that says, "If you sprinkle when you tinkle, be a sweetie and wipe the seatie". It's next to a giant Costco container of cleaning wipes. The boy laughed about it and I said, "Yeah! Wipe up after yourself!" He said, "I don't make a mess." I beg to differ. It has gotten noticeably better. Haha!

Haha! That’s crazy! I made a phone call last week with a potential teacher for my masters and the phone call was at 11:30 AM ( my time). In Texas, they have central time meaning that they are an hour behind. In Florida, we have eastern time.😊❤️🎼🎹

Yup!! The first time I started dealing with time zones, it sort of boggled my mind. XD You get used to it quickly though, especially when your friends start living in different places :D
@bukkfrig6 жыл бұрын
Joanna, you shouldn't have to keep track of your students' daylight savings time and start moving your schedule around. Instead, your bookings should just be all made in one time zone (probably GMT, but could just be your local time zone) and then both you and your students should calculate your own time differences from that fixed zone. Your booking site could automatically convert to their local time zone (if you include the booking date, then your site should automatically handle it, even if DST changes for one or both of you between now and then). Or otherwise just use Google and show your students how to as well: www.google.com/search?q=5%3A00PM+GMT+in+Pacific+Time Again, you can include a date. But really use anything other than trying to coordinate it all manually.

I once belched during a lesson. I opened my mouth to say something and "bruuuuuuurp" Speaking of embarrassing poo stories, I held one during a band rehearsal that didn't want to be held. I was packing everything up after (and *gasp* didn't swab my flute because I was in a rush to "go") and despite my best efforts...poop won. Instead of staying around and chatting I was like "Gotta run, bye" as I ran out the door toward the bathroom LOL

It's so true--I realized after a while just how incredibly unhealthy it was to not drink water and go to the bathroom for 4 or 5 hours straight. That's ridiculous!! Quick flute question. So I have been teaching my self to play the flute for about 2 1/2 months now and it's going pretty good. Now about 3 weeks ago I got my flute out to practice and I was playing the Bb scale and Eb, D and F wouldn't come out as usual. So I don't really know what I'm doing wrong if I could play those notes with ease. Any advice??
@JustAnotherFlutist6 жыл бұрын
Won't come out at all? It might be your flute! Can you get it look at by a technician?
@angelicaricardo1716 жыл бұрын
Yeah everytime I play, one by one the notes stop working as normal. I'll just get it checked out. Thanks!!
@kiaraeijo6 жыл бұрын
Angelica Ricardo I would suggest getting your flute checked. Either you have a leak or a spring went out of place
@pmh1nic6 жыл бұрын
Do the notes play if you slur from one note to another?
@angelicaricardo1716 жыл бұрын
No. Even when I use warm, fast, slow air it won't come out at all. I can only get Bb, A, C and sometimes G in both octaves.

Hey I know I am late to the video but very recently I stumbled across your channel and found out you did lessons online. I was just wondering what the pricing starts at. I am 14 and I have been playing the flute since I was 10 or 11 (5th grade I am in 8th now) and want to take private lessons along with band at school because I want to improve how I play and all the things along with that (sorry I am really bad at explaining things I hope that made sense 😂). Anyway I just wanted all the facts before I "presented" this idea to my mom. If any one knows the answer please respond and if not... Oh well ill find out another way I guess. Thank you! -A possibe new student of Joana

Hey so I’m terrified because my director wants me to do the solo “Flight of the Bumblebee”. I’m only halfway through my third year in the flute and I’m thirteen. He thinks I can do it because I’m “the MOST talented” (his words) of our section. I have to learn it within a month AND I have to relearn the flute due to braces. Any advice?
@JustAnotherFlutist6 жыл бұрын
Trick yourself into playing faster! Take the most comfortable speed that you can play it perfectly, and then play it through with a metronome at that speed. It might be slow, it's okay! Then do it again, but only go up one click (on a digital metronome--on your phone or an electronic metronome). It won't feel faster at all. After you're done, do it again and up one more click! It also won't feel faster either. Every day, go up 5-10 clicks, depending on how comfortable or how much time you have each day. As you can see, in one week, you'll already go up anywhere between 35-70 clicks!!! So it's actually a really fast way to get stuff up to speed. :D All the best!!

Do a lot of long tones( For your tone) and start by practicing slowly. If it’s good then put your metronome by four clicks higher until you’re able to play it at the actual tempo.

Hey Joana, I have just watched your “How Not to Apply for Music School” video and I am an 11th grader who is thinking about going to music school. One of the points I heard in your video was that a good preparation tool and one thing you should basically always do would be to email the professor for your instrument and ask for a lesson before the audition. But I’m a little bit discombobulated about something, next year I’m supposed to apply for the college, so do I email the professor to ask for lessons before I apply to the college or do I apply to the college and then email the professor? Your consideration is greatly appreciated
@JustAnotherFlutist6 жыл бұрын
Go ahead and email the professor to ask for lessons before you apply! You can actually do both options that you mentioned, there's really no judgement either way. In both situations, you're showing initiative and eagerness to find out if the two of you are a good student-teacher match. :)
@Denise-tg2ok6 жыл бұрын
Thank you for that informative reply, that really did help. Do you think you could possibly give an example of what an email to a professor requesting a lesson might look like… I don’t want to be too informal. Thanks,
@JustAnotherFlutist6 жыл бұрын
Haha, how about I give you some tips? I'd rather not give you an example, or else your email won't sound like you. ;) For a first email, use "Dear Prof. [last name]". State your name and that you're interested in studying with them at [name of school]. Then tell them what school you currently go to, how old you are, how many years you have been studying the flute, and who you currently study with. This first paragraph will give them a good overview of who you are. The second paragraph should state that you would like to take a lesson with them at their convenience. Ask them how much they charge, and then tell them what you would like to play for them. The idea is to do all the work yourself in arranging how the lesson is going to go, rather than putting the responsibility on them (they're very busy and sometimes knowing that they are being asked for a lesson with someone they don't know might make them feel pressured... And they may end up putting off your email). Keep the email short and sweet, and then see how they respond! You can also offer a more detailed explanation of your background in a future reply if they so desire (I know I really appreciate this whenever I get a lesson inquiry). All the best!

Hyaaaa Jo, that was hilarous but also handy advice. But regarding Discord; I believe a lot of your viewers (myself included) use discord, and the app actually may show your games' or other sites' ID sometimes, and I've noticed that you primarily want to keep your LoL username a secret (i cri everytim). So, if you're using discord and still want to maintain your games' ID's privacy, adjust the settings accordingly. *Hugs*

Hi Joana. I was wondering if I got a new headjoint for my flute, do I have to worry about it not fitting?
@JustAnotherFlutist6 жыл бұрын
You can get it refitted! Unfortunately, it's pretty impossible to only try a headjoint that is too wide for your flute--you would need to try it on another flute that can it it. Afterwards, though, you can absolutely have a technician resize a headjoint for your flute!

Daylight savings is such a hassle. In Austria it's the same as in Germany. On the 25th of March we forward our clocks from 2 am to 3 am. And back again on the 28th of October. It's so hard trying to schedule a FaceTime or WhatsApp video call with my friend who's 6 hours ahead of me, in Rhode Island. That's why we didn't call each other in like over a year. Originally we planned on calling each week, but it just doesn't work out. Thank god for WhatsApp, at least we can text every now and then. Nice hair by the way, did you rub a balloon on it before filming? :-P

Hi Joanna, do you use earplugs when you practice piccolo? Recently I've been trying to use them every time since if I don't my ears ring for hours after I stop practicing. Do you think piccolo is dangerous for your hearing? Thanks
@JustAnotherFlutist6 жыл бұрын
Absolutely it's dangerous, especially for your right ear. You'll often see piccoloists have one ear plug in on the right ear and leave the left one open to be able to hear your own tone, tuning, and other issues. I currently am looking into some ear plugs made specifically for musicians, like the Earasers. Check them out!
