The way myself and many people I know use a GMT watch is tracking secondary time zones using the gmt hand and the bezel while we’re in our home time. If you do business and communicate with people in other time zones, it makes sense. If you travel, adjusting the hour hand makes more sense, but I don’t see why one is the better way, it depends of how you use it

I’ve owned 7-8 Steinharts over the last 3-4 years. I ended up selling them eventually. But I enjoyed them all and thought they were all amazing watches (design, movement AND customer service) and a great value for the price. If I had the extra money or if I was gifted one, I’d enjoy wearing one again on my 8” wrist. I liked their weight/feel. In their place, today, I wear a Sea-Dweller 4000!😉

Jose H. From Steinhart to Sea Dweller that’s a brilliant watch but quite a hike up the hierarchy. Did you just tire of yet another homage piece and decide to pull the trigger on your grail watch?
@joseinluzon22185 жыл бұрын
The first luxury watch I ever bought was a Sea-Dweller back when I was a US Army Green Beret in the 80s. About 15 years ago my life fell apart and I lost everything I owned-including my Sea-Dweller (and other watches). I thought that was it for me. No more nice watches. No more nice anything- my life was over. But about 6 years ago I started collecting watches again. Nothing that expensive. I bought what I could afford. I bought and enjoyed the watches I had including the Steinharts. I did not think of them as homages or “Rolex Replacements”. I just appreciated them. FAST FOWARD: this past March I realized I had way too many watches to really wear (47) so I sold 28 of them on eBay. I bought a new Air-King and an older GMT Master II (two-tone) with the $ I made. Last month, I realized it was time to get myself a Sea-Dweller again- the watch that got me started in collecting watches. I sold about 8 more watches- a Pelagos, a Mónaco, Omegas, etc. I was nervous but I took a deep breathe and bought myself the Sea-Dweller. I truly feel like I gained back most of what I had lost- with this one watch. I’m me again after 15 hard years! I do not make a lot of money, but I have been very careful with my spending and I save for my watches. I am now down to just 10 watches. That’s much more manageable. My favorite will always be the Sea-Dweller. But I must confess yesterday, I bought an Explorer II! 😂 These 10 watches I have are not investments. I never plan on selling them. I have two daughters and plan on them ending up in their hands one day. At the moment they have zero appreciation for watches. Anyway, back to Steinharts. I still admire their quality. Even with the watches I own, if I saw a great deal on eBay on a Steinhart, I might get myself one again. I will always admire them. Sorry for the long story! 😬
@Pulsonar5 жыл бұрын
Jose H. That’s one hell of a story, absolutely no need to apologise, I really appreciate you sharing! It’s great that you can partake in your passions, plan meticulously and execute the perfect purchase to truly enjoy the thrill of owning a master timepiece again, especially after recovering from whatever trauma you suffered. I make a half decent living criss-crossing Europe as a microchip engineer. I love watches, but have a young family, and can only afford the lower end of Omega or TAG Heuer ranges at best. I guess for me it’s the motorsport association and also a favourite uncle who loved watches, cars cameras, and gadgets, I caught those bugs too. I had a rough few years since 2015 when 2 members of my family died within 3 months of each other. I didn’t work for 1 year whilst dealing with the devastating fallout. I had no money, but Ironically, I found dreaming about and hatching fantasy plans to enable owning a favourite collectors item preserved my sanity and lifted me out of depressing episodes and motivated me back into my career path. Throwing myself into passions like watches, cameras and cars and other interests that present challenging expense scenarios helped me deal logically with a lot of the challenges of grief processing. They were my critical escape valve, otherwise I would have suffocated directly from the overwhelming reality and grim aftermath of loss. My current favourites for my fantasy watch collection are Rolex Sub (with date), Rolex Explorer II (polar), Breitling Navitimer B01, and the ubiquitous Omega Speedy (sapphire sandwich) no mechanical + hesalite stuff whilst on earth ;) I currently own 2 watches, a Jack Heuer Carrera Chrono limited edition, and Seiko 7t69 analog Chrono yes another quartz, but a 27 year old special, that’s it, nothing special for the average connoisseur to savour. Hopefully, one day I will have the means to step into that fantasy and snap up one of my favourite Rolex, but I’m a long long way off... Oh well, let me spare you from the further mind numbing ramblings about the life of a stranger 😏

@@joseinluzon2218 wow intense experience man. but when i hear it you are better now. the point is it doesn't have to be a 10K watch to feel happy, a nice steinhart can be worn with the same experience. it costs 550 usd but there are people who can't pay a 5 dollar watch yet. so be happy with what you have, I also have a daytona myself, but I am just as happy with my invicta or my Steinhart GMT. if I am really honest with me about myself I find a rolex heavy about the price steel is steel. you really pay for the rolex name

I think the Steinhart is technically larger at 42mm, but has slimmer lugs making the case profile seem a bit smaller than it is - or put another way the Sub has a fat 40mm case and looks a bit bigger than it really is. But they are pretty comparable.

@jeanlefranc38175 жыл бұрын
Vid up to the usual very good standards. As a Rolex sports model owner, your perspective on this GMT Master II homage from Steinhart is way more relevant than the opinion of someone who has no reference point. The fact that you like it is a real credit to the German brand. I’ve recently acquired an Ocean One Vintage double red, coming straight from the Rolex 1665 Seadweller. It happily sits in the watchbox next to significantly more expensive timepieces, and I enjoy a lot this vintage diver look with none of the worry coming from strapping $10 ++ k on your wrist. Good job, Steinhart.

I watched this video with my Rolex GMT Master II in front of me. I think for $500 and how good it looks I was asking myself why the hell I shelled out over 8 K for mine. But then we all know why. I have no problem with the Steinhart Cyclops since I don't care for Cyclop on my Rolex and it does magnify the date somewhat and thats a good thing. Overall it's everything you said it a very nice watch and a GREAT price point for a GMT even if its a bit clumsy to operate but the date changing on the Rolex is a pain in the ass and to be truthful I find I run into date changes more than time zone adjustments. So I'll give the Steinhart a pass on that and maybe even an edge.

Maybe Rolex still in their Pan-am pilot user design thinking. If a pilot wears the watch everyday, timezones changing is more important than date changing. Maybe ? 🤔

Because people don't buy their original designs. You can see on Gnomon watches. The homage watches have so many more reviews than their own designs. Clearly there is a market and people buy homages.

re. the movement... here's a video from a German youtuber, opening up a Steinhart GMT: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jX3GZ6qbZrp5l9U ETA in his watch, but the video is a bit older, so who knows what they put in these days? Since I originally wrote this comment, I bought 3 Steinharts. One has a Sellita SW 330 (39 GMT Vintage ceramic with see-through back, so it's easy to ID). One has an SW 200 (42 O1 Green Ceramic, only comes with Sellita). The third one could have either an SW or ETA 2824 (42 OVM V3). The OVM is the most accurate, but it's been running for a month now while the other two still seem to be "breaking in" - if that's even a thing... ;)

The 42MM and the 39MM are both the wrong size. Why not just make a Rolex homage the right size (40MM) And how hard would it be to make a correct date window? But what really is ruinous to this offering is that Steinhart, in their wisdom, did not polish the center links. Their very dubious movement identification is also irksome.
