He lived his life with no apologies for his addictions and in a sense that's as honest as you can be. It's just a shame the world will never get to enjoy new music from him ever again because he was a true roots musician in every sense of the word. He loved and respected the music that defined this country and every song is a story or a journey he takes you on. I only saw him live once but his presence was something to behold. Tall, gangly, and cocky as all get out but it was mesmerizing to see him hold the attention of the room. My heart and soul is filled with sadness for his widow Jenn and his little girl Etta James Earle. It seems sobriety was always something that would elude him and drugs although they brought us some of his best recordings and live performances also were his undoing. RIP JTE.

Eric-he said many times he stopped believing you had to be a drunk or junky to make good music. Unfortunately he knew what a lot of us do-drugs are fucking awesome, until they’re not. Damn near killed me, and destroyed my life.

@@JoeSmith-dl9ok hopefully JTE's story can be an example in your life to not even think about slipping cuz all it takes is once and it's all gone. When you do take that step back and see things through sober eyes you realize how lucky you are to have family and friends that care about you enough to not let you go. They're the enemy when you're spun out but they were angels all along. Glad to hear you found your way again. Stay gold.

I knew the guy was good, but now that I hear he’s gone I’m finally putting some quality time into listening to his songs and albums. He’s absolutely brilliant. GREAT songs. Wish I had known him better, now missing him all the more. I’ve listened to his dad, Steve Earl, for years, have his albums, and like his show on satellite radio. Of Justin I’ve liked Harlem River Blues, saved it on my song list, but never dug much deeper. Today, I did, and I’m enriched by the music, torn up by the loss. Here’s to Justin Townes Earl! Rest In Peace, dear friend. So sorry you’re gone.

light & sound, thanks. More great stuff to check out! Yesterday I heard on satellite radio, on the Steve Earle show, and interview by him with his son Justin Townes Earle from three years ago, right before Justin’s daughter was born. It was a great, lively conversation between father and son with tracks played from Justin’s new album at the time. So much fun, but it tears your heart out knowing JTE is gone now. Dammit!

I followed him and saw him several times since including last summer with a band again and did Cant hardly wait as an encore. I was able to say hey after the show and let him know I really dug his music. I am just gut punched today. It sucks for anybody who is just 38 to pass on. He was so fucking good at his craft! When I listen or watch a musician I take in so many things but to me the most valuable of the different traits that make a exceptional musician are their technical ability , their genuine presence , and their talent to bring me out of my mind to a different place with just a few bars of their music. Justin had all of these in spades ! You will be missed every time I hear a new song.
