I think the root of motivation is that "we want the great result, the experience, the feeling of success." Most of the time, we won't focus on loving the working, the process but only dream of, think of, fond of the success, which is, of course, always attracting us

Yess I think this is exactly it! And if we focus on the end result only, we don't even realize we might not enjoy it. Meaning we would only realize it didn't fulfill us when we got there, having already suffered the whole way to it

a very interesting experience for me was when I was studying my ass off for 11th and 12th grade (quite literally grinding 10-14 hours a day) and the last 6 months of preparation for the final exams was even more intense. Then I got all the percentages and grades that I've been dreaming of for 2 years and even surpassing them. You know what I felt when I got the results and that I got accepted to my dream uni? Nothing. After a very weak spark of excitement and fulfillment which lasted for around 2 minutes I felt blank. For the last 2 years, I sacrificed most of my day to study and now I had absolutely no idea what to do. The summer was very gruesome, most of the time I didn't enjoy anything, I kinda fell into deep depression. It's been 6 months now, and it's only now that I start getting back even my willingness to do something studying related. I burnt the fuck out. But still, these years were worth every single moment of it. Even though I hated it sometimes, I look back and realize that putting so much effort into something gave me profound peace and happiness (even in the absence of joy/pleasures like video games). The message I was trying to convey is that the goal itself doesn't mean jack shit. It's a very attractive thing that we don't have, but when we reach it it's like "okay, what's next"

This is exactly right. It's a super subtle sensation within us, but if one can sense it, it can be life changing. One will begin seeking what truly engages them, rather than seeking to satisfy the ego.

I STUDIED like hell and did not get the grades I expected and it leads me to depression and anxiety disorder and now I AM TAKING meds and I consult to my psychiatrist and am changing my study techniques . Your videos help me a lot .THANK YOU .

Hope you’re doing better! In my experience - and aside from being with loving family & friends - developing meditative practices and spending time in nature offer deep healing and pathways forward. Appreciating a sunrise or sunset, feeling a breeze moving across your face, noticing the bark on a tree or leaves on a potted plant or the lift of a bird taking flight. The sights, sounds, textures and scents of this world. Wishing you the best ✨

1. Build habits to decouple motivation and productivity 2. Burnout is a symptom. Find root cause. 3. Control brings confidence. Understand your learning process that get results so you feel like you have control. Lack of clarity is demotivating and can lead to burnout. 4. Regular reflection and experimentation - are they working? Is it the outcome I expect? No other alternative

motivation is a feeling lazyness is avoidance of useless things if you do something for right important reason you feel motivation or make oneself feel it and you don't get lazy only tired overdoing it

Burnout isn't just about motivation. It's also a psychological condition that's very serious and can happen even if you get the best grades all the time and you achieve all of your goals. People associate it with job burnout, but it can happen to students too and it's very serious. Sometimes you just need to realize that grind and hard work isn't everything in life and you need to also take care of yourself and have fun, even if it means your grades won't be as perfect as you want. Taking a step back and evaluating what's making you feel horrible is the key to solve actual burnout. You mind and body need rest. It's just feedback telling you that you're doing too much and not paying attention to your needs.

deficiencies in body or loosing sense of thing done it's real but fixable sometimes buy eating better sometimes by changing the way of doing the thing sometimes but changing thing you did to something with deeper sense (not necessarily something you like you don't need to like something to do it well and feel motivation to do it)

I work three jobs and go to school full time. This past semester, I bought an iPad to take better notes, be more productive, and stay on track. I’ve never had these issues before but thought an iPad would help. In the end, I burned myself out by taking too many linear notes and writing way too much. Your videos have been a tremendous help in refining my thought process on how I study and manage my time.

Honestly I really loved your definition of a success , it's exactly what I used to think until I got so burnt out and started questioning everything whether my goals were even worth me loosing all my mental health. But I know that learning itself is something I really enjoy and the more I'm watching your content ( finally the YT algorithm actually doing something good for once )I'm realising that I should follow your advice and just let my brain learn the way it actually it learns on its own. Can't agree more how essential critical evaluation is in elevating to the next level. It's like how a recreational badminton player can play badminton casually for 40 - 50 years and at most master only the few skills he/she tried to learn as a novice. No transcendence!

I learned this by myself. If you have study or work to do if you try to rest until you recover totally, you are never going to do the job. Some times even energysers are necessary, at least for me. Now i am watching some of your videos after others, and you have amazing teaching, i have just found a diamond of content.

For me, I always just crammed while studying for exams. Given the amount of work I was really happy with my grades but they weren’t perfect and I fell into depression over my inability to stay consistent and start studying / working ahead of time to finally for once feel like I have tried my best. I feel like I’m not able to live up to my potential and that weighs me down so bad. I now have big issues with finishing my masters degree, performing at working and everything. I have completely lost my self esteem and don’t trust myself to do anything… I’m in therapy but so far it hasn’t gotten better

I studied so hard at the beginning if the school year and was getting the grades i wanted but i burnt out so quickly and could not ignite that level of self discipline or ‘motivation’ at all and i have spiraled low to bare minimum passing and even failing so far this year am so disappointed but the amount of stress i place on myself is unhealthy the burn out as resulted in unhealthy habits polluting other/all areas of my life i haven’t watch the video yet but i hope it helps gl guys x

I love your method of moving from important concepts or terms to a place with order where there is sequence, cause and effect relationships, relationships of one thing included in another and more relationships. I love that you go from a lot of words together to something nicer, from something as boring as letters to something more interesting organized with a patterned structure. I love it because I love math and I haven't used it at a high text level or in class, maybe I lack or lack a definition of an important or more practical concept and also how to organize things, but it's interesting. There are also situations where a person experiences burnout rarely, and it's not tied to any systematic cause. In these cases, taking a break is a good solution since the problem isn't a repeating event. Also, periodic burnout could also be caused by something other than dwindling motivation cycles. Perhaps it's a workplace environment type issue, where you're expected to work overtime constantly. So this video doesn't necessarily talk all about burnout in general, but rather burnout specifically related to changes in motivation, making the title and thumbnail a little misleading. I think both should be more accurate imo (I speculate that) you're phrased them in such a way to be more clickbaity, and I personally think that drives people away from your content more than it attracts. I don't think your videos need to be controversial or antagonizing towards any sort of group to get people's attention because they're really insightful. And I think people find it more interesting to be genuine on youtube than be the flamboyant youtuber personality stereotype Another example is your "the problem with active recall" video. A lot of people seemed to have misinterpreted that your argument was that active recall is bad, due to the nature of your title. When in reality, the main point of the video was to focus on encoding rather than recall. (Also, after people find out about active recall through productivity guides, they're actually subconsciously encoding instead, which they've misunderstood as being active recall. Which is why many people seem to hold the term "active recall" in high standards when in reality, it is their encoding that was important. So you might be surprised to see how many people would agree with you. And I feel like clarifying these semantics would've been really important)

Not to mention, even with the right study methods, the huge workload in general could require a lot of time to study, causing burn outs anyways. The video also doesn't take into consideration, the different exceptions that could still lead to burn outs

I remember walking into a physics exam and feeling so underprepared compared to my peers because of the difference in our equation notecards. I wrote down a few equations that I had trouble recalling during a practice session and then used the notecard to do my next practice session. My peers had spent days making notecards with color coding and writing so small it was hard to see without magnification. Another student (who had no notecard) and I were the only ones who passed. While others were making notecards, we were practicing using the equations and finding holes in our understanding. Through my academic career people were always stunned by how little I studied to get the grades I did. I simply studied to understand; I did that because my memory is actually pretty shit😅 but it worked out.

I burnt out because I can't do what I want, I have passion. But, too many homework in university(many homework are useless and time consuming, I don't have problem with hard and useful homework).

I'm pretty sure if you just take cognition and perception you have all the building blocks you need to understand how Learning Works like that's basically the classes on how human data is inputted and how human data is processed and stored. I think you can complete them both at the same time you can do it in one semester man. Honestly it should be a requirement for being a teacher

Hello, Dr Sung! The usefullness of the 'black box' process you described has had my curiosity for a long time and I'm quite glad pursuing it wasn't a giant waste of time. I have a question about that part: Does motivation repair itself quickly as a result of mapping-out the learning system and reflecting on the process? (habits take a long time to form and while deep understanding is hard to master, is it fast to pick-up on as a tool to mend motivation) As usual, appreciate the brain-steroids and the sense of humour, please keep-up the good work!

I realise that this will depend on what you're studying, but when I was studying for the final year of my Master's in psychology, where basically all of the end-of-year marks were essay exams (the worst kinds of essays AND the worst kind of exams), one of the things that I did that was super-useful and unusually forward-thinking for me (thanks, ADHD), was to start the year by figuring out which elements of the various courses I was studying were common to each other and putting a little bit more focus into those areas. As the year progressed and I was doing the coursework, I kept an eye out for things that were common between the courses and moved those into my focused study list. The benefit was threefold: 1. If you're studying the same stuff for two classes, you can (almost) halve the time spent studying for the same results (and if you've studied it for one class, it's easier to expand your learning when it comes up in the other class). 2. Because each piece of information was now related to two distinct areas of learning, the key facts were more memorable. 3. When I was in the exam, writing the essay, I could give more creative answers by bringing in elements of the other topics that I'd studied that were relevant to the question, thereby showing that I had been reading outside of what was assigned for the class when, in fact, it was often just the assigned reading for one of the other classes.

Yep....now after 3 tears of full grind and working every minute on my engineering entrance preparation i am totally burned out, no motivation to study..... I basically worked my ass off for 3 years....still i could get to top 1000 ranks student in that exam....i infact came 80,000 rank out of the students where a million of students were competiting....(yaah JEE of India) But yaah am coming into ur course within a month...!!!! 🔥🔥🔥🔥

sir Justin! i recently found your channel while finding videos about study techniques which had proved to be super helpful for me particularly this one which fully resonated to my situation. i experienced an extreme burnout a week before my CAIE exams this summer and and the summer of 2022, it made me feel so discouraged and exhausted and what not just because my way or the path i chose to get to my goal was harming me to an extent that i lost a lot of weight. As a result i wanted to find out what i was doing wrong because obviously i don't want to go through this vicious cycle of indirect self exhaustion ,rather direct, again. Thankyou very much for enlightening my mind and of other students who are in dire need of advice from people like you. i will try my best to follow your advice so i can come back here and proudly say that i overcame BURNOUT!!!! secondly, i would be really thankful if you could suggest me any books related to learning about learning and the psychology behind working smarter and harder! thankyou sir!!

I felt the part of coming back to work and wanting to leave again.... I've been a cashier for 5 years now and I've never liked it, I do it because I need to pay my bills. I went on holiday for 2 weeks and it was the most amazing and fulfilling time I've spent in a while My fiancé came to my country after we haven't seen each other for 6 months again and we spent our time out going to amusement parks and zoo's When he left and I had 1 day left before work I had a big depressive episode and I felt like I'd rather die than go back, it was the worst I've felt in a while I decided to learn 3d rigging/animation so when I move to the UK I can maybe get a job that I enjoy more❤️

As far as how my burnout started.. I am going to school full time and working full time. And I would sacrifice everything to get to the end of the semester. Sleep, having a clean environment, I mean I was clean and I had clean clothing to wear but like I turned into a rat person overall and I would need to take a weekend to throw away bags of trash and clean everything and at least one week strait of just working full time to catch up on sleep. Well I’ve been enrolled in classes every semester including summer for well over a year… maybe 2 I don’t remember. My mother has had either a surgery scheduled or this time she accidentally broke an ankle. And I’m the only daughter that lives at home so the workload does automatically fall to me 90% of the time. The guys in the house have gotten better, since I snapped a few times. But my schooling never suffered. But my boss trying to convince me that working after being awake for over 24 hours is what is considered “failing” so like I’m not mad to be falling under that bar. I drive heavy machinery. I just know something has to give and because I’m paying my way through school it is going to have to be school that gives because what are my other options?

TAKEAWAYS - Motivation and productivity oscilattes periodically. It's a human thing. We are not machines. - Habit is more powerful than motivation. - Learn METACOGNITVE habilities ASAP. Steps: 1. Map out your learning system - What you do in class, note writing technique, how you review, how you prepare for exames - Why you use each technique? Does this make sense according to leraning theory? - How does each technique work with the others? 2. Regular critical reflection & experimentation 3. Feed the results in the next experiment - It is hard... But, it really pays off
