Gratz to the winner! I totally underestimated that 400 in stock bottom end form. Ive seen crazy numbers from a stroked one but that is the first Ive seen one be that sick without a whole different bottom end. Also, I hope that makes the "dual plane" doubters second guess themselves a bit more too. I gotta be that guy that says I told you so with all that torque they couldnt even see on the dyno cuz too low RPM!!! Dual plane suck for high rpm but they just rock for street and daily drivers. I mean I'm glad I was right that the holley made the best torque but I think I'd have lost that wager if you'd done the tunnel-ram uncorked. I can only imagine what the numbers would look like with a 440 block getting the same treatment as this engine. Great series Joe, thanks for giving it to us!

That's awesome Joe, nice job, I've always known that the "smogger" 400 B blocks had a lot of potential hidden inside them. Wasn't it's first year of production 1972'? So it's roots had to have come from the heart of the muscle car era. I believe it replaced the 383, so mother Mopar must have had big plans for it, that is until that smog era thing took hold, what do ya do? Well at least Chrysler got a few of them put out there for us.

@@JustMoparJoe Yeah Joe, that's kinda what I was thinking also. From what I've heard people say, if you're engine is putting out more torque than horsepower, or somewhere there close, then it's still somewhat of a mild engine. Maybe a cam with more duration?IDK... I had a 292 duration cam in my old 383 and it was still "very" streetable, even with the stock converter and rear gears. My high school auto shop teacher couldn't believe how smooth it ran with that camshaft. But it was only 442" lift, so that might have had something to do with it.

There is a video on youtube where they test open headers, and the three-and-a-half-inch header collectors made the most hp and tq. My little 340 with a comp cam 270H loved long tube headers with 3 1/2 collectors open and the 800 CFM TQ. A smaller carb or any restriction in the exhaust slowed it down. Would love to see what your engine would have made with 3 1/2 collectors and 3 1/2-inch open extensions.

It's going to run mid tens! Set up a maxwedge style exhaust dumps, 3inch out the back, electric cut outs in front of the rear tires, and good 3 inch mufflers then you can run it on the street occasionally! Visit the local bone yard for some 3 inch stainless diesel pickup pipes, they make great doner pieces! Spend as much time on the exhaust as you do on the engine! After all, unlike the engine, the exhaust will last the life of the car! So use stainless! Your car is so cool already!!! KEEP IT BETWEEN THE DITCHES!!! YEE HAW!!!

That is a stout 400. With all that info, you have a great base to tune from for your Barracuda. IMO, 3” collector extensions are worth trying at the track. I like the tunnel ram the best, but I don’t know if that’ll fit under your hood, even with the scoop. The Holley manifold did a lot better than I would’ve imagined, but of course you’re right that it was given a lot of help with the porting. Question: I don’t recall if you degreed the camshaft. If so, did you install at 110? Or is it retarded some? That’s where my head goes with the peak horsepower coming in before 6000. But you can likely still shift at around 6200 for best ET. I think those mufflers although low restriction by design really were not designed for high HP applications. Many lower cost mufflers really Target lower perf engines where people want better sound. In the old days I always ran California and Walker turbo mufflers because they were affordable and sounded fantastic. But looking back those mufflers on a serious ho application are most likely a restriction. Thrush glass packs and Purple Hornies are probably not the best for high HP engines but none the less were the gold standard in the 70s and 80s. Dang Meijer stores had them in stock.

Thanks Mike. I was trying to mimic the purple horny style here. I even did a track test with these vs. 3” glasspacks vs. 3” open pipe. It picked up one mph with the open pipe, but no ET. I think the converter was so loose that it mattered less.

@@JustMoparJoe good videojoe Those rockers were designed for 470 ish lift above that the adjuster angle can be off and the shafts are inthe wrong location I ran a stage II wedge in 62 Isky rockers are better than factory iron but getting hard to find I have some ERSON 1.75 iron rockers which take some grinding with stock (all) heads, Run the stiffest pushrods you can find watch some spinton videos second find the guy that does the rocker shaft relocation kits it does make a big difference and lets you run longer valves and taller springs run the lightest valves possible next time you do heads, you are doing guides anyway If you do seats I like Durabond sintered

The 400 is possibly the best engine Dodge ever created. It just needs to be opened up. The 426 Hemi is out of the picture.

I sure like this one. It’s punching above it’s weight!

What wilson spacer did you use? Im assuming its a single plane intake with a 4 hole spacer? New to all this thanks
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
Yes sir. That’s the Wilson 4 hole that opens into the full plenum. The intake is a “street” single plane that’s been well ported(before I purchased it).

I had a 400 I got from a farmer that had it rebuilt after he hit a rock with oil pan . Not sure who did the work for him but man it pulled hard all the way to 6500rpm

why not same size collectors or Cllector to muffler with better one and all same in flow and out
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
That would be ideal. A collector extension the same size as the collector. Maybe one that narrows slightly towards the end. This one literally choked it down coming out. I’ll know for the racetrack
@smilsmff Жыл бұрын
@@JustMoparJoe there is the old school use longer length and spray paint the extension with header paint and where the paint stops Saw the rest off , that would be ideal, or 18 inches is what the rest call correct

I think a cam swap could get you where you want it.
@JustMoparJoe Жыл бұрын
It’s true. The cam may be a limiting factor. Will see how it goes in the car and if I need to adjust.

Please get yourself a better dampener. I've seen too many stock ones slip. That engine deserves it!
