Go for the flat sapphire, Jody. That's where I think 90% of modders go wrong. Double-domed doesn't suit the profile of the skx and family, and it just makes the watch even thicker. You can thank me later 🙏😉

That's an astute comment. And one of those 'but of course...it's so simple' situations. I *love* a box domed crystal. But it is a particular style option not suited to many of this eras chunky case designs. Well said.

Love my Blueberry! Running really accurately too… +20s over a week… pretty good I’d say. Not a lover of the bezel insert though. The daylight half is either black or a garish blue depending on angle, and I’ve never been a lover of the prominent polished bevel on the crystal. A matched pair of no-bevel domed sapphire and Batman ceramic bezel insert are on the way from DLW as we speak!

I’m tempted to buy it and mod it but I might wait to see what the micro brands come out with. I'm an admitted Seiko fanboi. I have other watches, 2 Tag Heuers, a Tudor and an Omega, but I usually wear one of my Seikos. I'm on the waitlist at my local Seiko AD for one of these, he says I should have it at the end of the month. I never thought I would be on the waitlist for a Seiko 5. I also plan on buying an NH34 movement and building a GMT with it. It's only a matter of time before the modding community starts producing 24h chapter rings, they already produce everything else needed to build a good looking GMT. I'm thrilled that there will be budget GMTs with a solid movements for under $500. I know there are already budget GMTs on Aliexpress, but I haven't had a lot of luck with Chinese movements. Seiko movements are not the most accurate, but from my experience, they are robust. I have a 7002 diver that I bought in 1990 that is still plugging along.
@wapphigh52502 жыл бұрын
Sure but as you pointed out Jody it's a caller (office) GMT ...if you are using this to track on OS time zone at home it's next to useless in rotation if the watch winds down... that's why I bought the other one you reviewed.. the Timex Quartz for half the price, so this will all just depend what you are buying it for (travel vs second time zone tracking)

I’ve never really liked Seiko styling and couldn’t justify the price vs. a high spec micro or even a highly modded Orient mako/ray II. Thanks in part to your reviews, my collection of affordable watches has grown considerably in the last few months. I have a couple Steeldives, 4 or 5 different Pagani homages that I genuinely enjoy and I went on an Orient kick a while back and ended up with 5 of those, all with crystal, bezel/insert and bracelet/strap mods that kept me occupied while recovering from an injury. My latest horological itch has come in the form of type-B fliegers after getting beaten on an eBay auction on a San Martin SN030. I know I should have waited for the sale but I had to scratch the itch so I ended up buying a Steeldive SD1940 on the upgraded bracelet that was on sale right then that still has not arrived. After doing a little more research I decided that one wouldn’t be enough and I needed ‘just one more flieger’ so I have an Escapement Time PT5000 (last one available on AliExpress Black Friday sale) on the way and I can’t wait to get it on wrist to see if I like it as much in real life as I did in pictures and video reviews. I may gift or return the Steeldive but I have a really hard time letting go of watches, even ones I don’t wear because I MIGHT want to wear it one day. It’s a sickness, Dr. Jody, do you know a cure? 😂 Thanks for the great reviews!

Good after market jubilee bracelets are not easy to find. I currently wear my Champagne Alpinist (SPB123J) on a jubie from Parnis, not because it is good and not because it is cheap. But because its 'okay'; at ~ 3.2mm depth it suits the case perfectly asnd isn't overly weighty - pkus it tapers to just under 16mm. There's probably something better available but after settling on jubilee #3, throwing more $ at a sub $1k watch is...inefficient.

@@JustOneMoreWatch Still. Those will exist solely because people bought those Seiko. I don’t understand the criticism on specs either. Seiko has taken the risks and has developed the movement, it just makes sense that they are going to charge more than a random micro brand that will just buy and case a NH34. R&D costs money. And the great thing is with those SKX/SSK/SRPD we know we have plenty of mod parts to improve the watch ! Overall I think we should all thank Seiko because if it wasn’t for them and Citizen literally 90% of the micro brands wouldn’t exist !

Totally agree. Its Seiko. The heritage and history. Of course a micro-band or a chinese company can produce it a cheaper price with greater specs, but the feeling is totally different for me if you wear a Seiko as oppose to a lesser-known brand. Also, essentially its a Seiko 5, so i dont understand why people complain that it needs a sapphire, milled clasp etc.. because none of their Seiko 5 lineups have sapphires. Its different if its a Prospex line and you are paying at premium prices yet no sapphire. This is truly a great watch with an affordable GMT workhorse. Im getting +2 seconds/day with my Seiko 5 GMT. Loving it. Even if there is a microband using the same 4R34 movement next year, i would still love my Seiko 5 GMT because I simply just love it. So haters just deal with it. Haha

The hardlex crystal is a lot more durable than a sapphire one and could end up with scratches and not much else. However having said all that if the Chinese microbrand companies can supply us with sapphire crystals on their watches then why can't seiko?.

BUT it's great for the micro brands with the NH34 movement, it's going to make 'GMT's' so very available for a very modest price!

How about the accuracy of this watch ?

I guess the speed of the Chinese homages will depend on the depth of their nh35 stocks, I suspect closer to 6 months. It’s an SKX with jet setter ambitions, same cheap ass short cuts, kudos for solid end links but no sapphire and a pressed clasp. I do like the bezel. So the bottom line is that Seiko’s biggest new release isn’t actually new. I would save my money for a helm

The SKXtra, I’m quite a fan of it. I’m adding it to the competition for a budget GMT to get me through travelling later this year.

*If* it's to your taste, budget, wrist size etc., etc. consider the Lorier Hyperion too. I bought mine pre-owned for less than $800AUD delivered (around $500USD more or less). It's by no means perfect but it's slender and comfortable, both familiar and distinctive - and it has character in spades. A highly recommended budget GMT that has something special, despite its imperfections.✌🏼️

The Presage gmt is ace too with great finishing, hi beat movement and enchanting dial, but its twice the price.

@@jamesblonde2271 I forgot the Presage GMT existed! I don't particularly like admitting it (because it's not how I see myself!) but my taste in watches is pretty conservative. So I'm not big that piece. I do like the 6R mov'ts though and it's a popular watch, so yeah; good call. As an aside, I'd be *very* happy if this new 4R GMT happened to prompt the Citizen group into developing a Miyota 9 series GMT mov't.

Much as a don't want to like it, this little GMT some charm. Love that bezel insert and I don't dislike Hardlex, my watches have an easy life and I've not scratched a Hardlex yet. I'm not a GMT guy, and I think that the extra hand doesn't really match the proportions of the handset, do like the extra splash of colour, I do like a black dial and this one looks great, no doubt about it. Nice to see a cyclops, it's so nice when one can actually see ones date complication 👀! Wouldn't buy one because it's a 5 not a diver, but I'm sure they sell like hotcakes.

The specs are actually impressive for the price. And like.you said, the implications are very tantalizing!

I got it. I love it’s appearance. It’s lume is powerfull, way way way beyond Certina DS2 divers. But it is annoying that a watch beyond $200 doesn’t have sapphire crystal, 316 steel case, 316 steel bracelet, hands that miss the marks (the GMT-hand’s positions is 50% off mark). The quality of the bracelet and the clasp feels a bit cheap compared to Certina and Tissot steel watches. In addition, after hand winding my Seiko 5 GMT once every day to every other day for three weeks, I suddenly experience that it’s possible to hand wind it «forever». It’s stop-mechanism «disappeared»… So now I don’t know whether the hand-wind wind the spring at all. It is at least still ticking. (Yes, I will visit the retailer in near future). I also have a Tissot prs516 steel (quartz) that I payed about $350 at a retail store about 6 years ago, and it got sapphire crystal. It’s bracelet and clasp in 316L-steel is solid and tight. I think Seiko have something to learn from them, or am I unrealistic..?

Double-domed, IMHO, Jody. I am intrigued by the prospect, of a "Samurai GMT." In-house, at that. Great work, as usual. See you, in the next one
