Are you sure that your children will look after you ? If you are not sure, then nursing home is safe. Otherwise the home nurses in India will not give good care. But nursing homes in foreign countries give excellent care to its citizens with 7 times meals a day

I settled in Australia, but I wanted to live in ernakulam for at least 3 months, where I studied more than 3 decades ago. But I never recommend to anyone to live their retirement life in India.

@Malayalionthemove, the cost of living is much lower in India compared to Australia however there are so much issues to live in India especially when you are old. There is no safety or security in India. If you employ a carer then they may kill you and take your money and runway. Here in Australia, the health care system is fantastic, as a citizen you have the right to receive all the care that you need, which can be in the hospital settings, residential aged care settings or home care settings. On top of retirement villages are well supported. Here aged care workers are screened and trained. There is less violence towards seniors. Of course you have freedom to do what you like to do, if your physical and mental health is ok, in case you can't take care of yourself or family not supporting you then the government is responsible for your care. India is only good for people who can look after themselves, but you never know what brings at the old ages. I travelled to many countries, sorry to tell the truth, India is very unsafe compared to many other Asian countries. Scared to walk around alone, especially at night, public stares at you, make you uncomfortable. Travelling/ living alone in India is very difficult and unsafe. A few years back, me and my daughter visited Trivandrum , we booked our hotel from Australia however we didn't like the hotel once we reached there. So, we looked for another hotel, my goodness it was very difficult to find a hotel room in the city as they asked me a Aadhaar card , Australian passport and oci card were not enough for them . We struggled there to find an accommodation for a night even though I was an Indian and spoke Malayalam . If a holiday is difficult in India then I can't think of my retirement in India.

Life is so fickle Malayalee. Few years ago we made a trip to Machu Picchu. However one of my friend who was supposed to accompany us died all of a sudden just two days before the trip. Person of good health. 2025 November I am planning to make a trip to Angkor Wat in Siem Reap Cambodia. Hope myself and my wife can make it. Angkor Wat was a dream for many years.

Once somebody leaft indian citizen,it is very difficult to get indian citizen again, example is bollywood cinstar, Akshay Kumar,it took more than 10years to get indian citizen ship such a famous person.

It's not difficult, you just need to live in India as an OCI for 10 years to reclaim citizenship. But if you are a Canadian citizen why would you want Indian citizenship and loose your Canadian Pension?

The current administration has made it much easier for those with OCI cards to regain their citizenship after residing in India for more than five years. I hope India will allow dual citizenship, like many other developed countries.

This could actually be a huge problem for Kerala in the future.. a lot of people will come back to retire in their home towns, that means, they won't really contribute to the economy but will require social welfare measures and healthcare facilities. Yes will have money in their hands, but it will be for private consumption and not investment. They will also not be employable. Kerala is already struggle for space and the economy is very volatile.. Will have to wait and see how things go when expats return altogether..

That’s incorrect. It will be economically beneficial for the state. All the returning residents will need homes, which will create jobs and contribute to Kerala’s GDP. They pay bills, buy groceries, and much more. Most expats do not require any social welfare; they have investments and receive better support from their country of citizenship.

​@@Malayalionthemove Not here to argue, however, you really are referring to just a handful of malayalis settled abroad who do white collar jobs and already have ancestral property here in Kerala. For such a person coming back doesn't really present much of a challenge. However, the diaspora now it way too diverse for such a generalization to be made. Kerala's population is already on the decline because of the lower fertility rate, Meaning Kerala's demographic dividend will be very low by the time expats decide to come back. Kerala would already be full of old people by the time the current hoard of emigrants come back from around the world. Regarding spending on groceries and taxes and stuff, all this comes under private consumption. See I've already mentioned that private consumption will be there, however an economy doesn't "develop" with private consumption. The economy might survive in the short term with it, but it can't develop with it. This is the reason why the current GDP growth of Indian economy is criticized by many learned people, that our economy is 61% private consumption which is very unhealthy. For Kerala it is even higher if I remember correctly. I could go on and give you facts and points, however, i don't think it would be a productive discussion. Good luck.
