Leonard Nimoy did a great job here conveying Spock's tranquil rage at Scotty and then shame at his own momentary lapse, all without having to raise his voice or bare his teeth. With respect to anyone else who portrayed Spock, no one nailed it quite like Leonard Nimoy. RIP & LLAP

True, Leonard Nimoy was the original and although they didn’t throw away the mold, all reproductions can’t compare, equal, or set the bar any higher.

No actor that I know of took more responsibility for a role than Leonard Nimoy. Once he embraced it, he made it his own. He decided what Spock was and wasn't, and by extension, what Vulcans were. Did a masterful job and created an enduring character that will resonate through time. RIP.

Bravo to Nimoy, Doohan and Shatner. Even though I've seen this scene a hundred times, it still chills me. The anger, the hatred, the overwhelming emotions portrayed by these actors is just amazing. Oh and the slash is, as always right there.

It is..quite a great one..but to me..the best "Spock" ever..is in Wrath of Khan..when Kirk see Spock dying..and yells at him from outside the glass. That has to be the most heartbreaking cry ever.

We were fans of the show as children and that "transfer out FRRREEEK!" line had us laughing out loud and repeating it at every opportunity. Nowhere has the word freak been so memorably employed.

Great episode. Fulfills all three Roddenberry directives. It's science fiction (albeit soft). It examines the human condition. And finally, it's a rollicking story. I especially like how Mr. Scott gets to hyper-act. As an engineer concerned with technical issues, he's often more level-headed than not(at least by trek standards) Finally, one of the best things Trek did was humanize the enemy, and man couldn't we use more of that in this day and age.

Later in that same scene Spock says the phrase 'apparently it is by design that we fight. We seem to be pawns' This really strikes home when examining the modern political climate of today.

When I first saw Scotty going ballistic in this episode (many many years ago when I first saw it) I thought, wow, this is freaky! And the lighting added to the feel of the scene -- unusually dark for 1960s Star Trek, very effective.

Scotty was third in command and he should have been given way more screen time in the the series. But truly ensemble shows didn't happen until the 1980s which is a shame.

Originally, Scotty was supposed to be Kirk's best friend. I think the series played out well but I would have liked to see more screen time with Jimmy Doohan.

You need good actors and good writers to have decent shows. Actors today are nearly worthless and writers are no better. Dare I say adversity is what creates a character and most people today have never known real adversity.

I love how they think of 'race hatred' as the worse possible thing to ever come to, worse than war. Yet in this present time, its almost a common thing to come across. I love Gene Roddenberry's philosophy and ideals of the future. I couldn't agree with anyone more than I of him.

Bullshit. This scene is about Scotty & Spock momentarily feeling racial hatred towards each other because of an entity that feeds of such things, so of course he'd say Vulcan as if it's a dirty word. They wouldn't have allowed such swear words in the 60s anyway, even if they thought an accent would mask it as something else.

Exactly it. "Two forces aboard this ship - each of them equally armed. Has a war been staged for us, complete with weapons and ideology and patriotic trumpy (?) even raised hatred?" The ship is the 'world ship' - no exceptions - which proves that the perpetrators did not know what they were doing. Had they known what they were doing they would have protected themselves from the conflict. Fort a fortified building or strategic position. There is no fort, no walls, no windows.
