I know this comment is 2 yrs later, but should we also use our toes to "hug" the ground if we are going barefoot? Meaning to put slightly more pressure into the ground with the toes instead of just having the toes rest on the ground for balance.

Chris I've seen you squat/deadlift in both converse shoes and barefoot. Does it help to alternate between barefoot and flat soles or do you recommend 100% barefoot lifting?

It's definitely not necessary to lift barefoot all the time, we just find that rooting is a lot better without since most shoes are kinda narrow in the toebox area. If you compete and want to get as close to barefoot as possible, something like deadlift slippers(I use a7) would be a great option.

I stopped wearing shoes in the house 12 years ago when I married an Asian woman and I swear my feet are much healthier now. As Americans we just don't spend enough time with our shoes off. I even think wearing flip flops and slides cause you to use your toes more when you walk.

thecrazyoftheinsane No shoes in the house is a thing in houses with carpet in every room or at least decent temperatures in the house. From other places in the world where you have cold climates and tile/stone floors you don't want to go barefoot, and don't talk about germs, that's what your immune system is for, no one's putting their shoes on the bed/couch anyways.

Why do some powerlifters look at the floor when they do a squat motion. I honestly feel this is a bad habit. Whats your opinion? I personally squat in wrestling shoes I like to almost feel the floor on my feet.

They are thinking about trying to keep their spine neutral. While we won't say it's wrong, we find that having the head up in a more neutral position usually works better.
