Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are back on Hyce's server to check out a proper 2% line from the smelter to the iron mine! A lot of people have been insisting that this is the way to go so Hyce decided to show me just how ridiculous a low grade line actually is!
Check out Hyce on KZbin: / markhuber

16 too, I loved my Thomas and friends toys. They were plastic since the wooden ones were too expensive, but I had all the cool sets. The quarry, the mine, the sheds, the coal loader. It was a mighty collection. Shame I sold it actually, if it wasn’t weird i think I’d still secretly love it. If I ever have kids, they better still be making that stuff so I can get some and play with them one day haha!

I've got a circuit that goes from the sawmill, to the iron mine, to the smelter, and back up to the sawmill. That has 2.5% max grades on the uphill part and is about as direct as you can get. That's possible just because the sawmill is midway in height between them. (The part from the iron mine down to the smelter is max 4%, IIRC)

You need a 45 degrees or even 80 degrees rail to quickly go down from there to the closest useful point with minimal power usage. This way, you could send autonomous trains on a 2% incline, use the cheapest locomotive (maybe even the $150 one) to get to the foot of the mountain, then use stairs to get to the place from where you have a steep downhill rail, then catch the trains as they arrive to the station (or have someone else there processing the trains, like you did with Moonbo or Dapper a few days ago).

my idea regarding a 2% or less grade wherever possible is to get the most out of whatever engine you have. a Class 70 Consolidation is going to pull a lot of train up a 2% grade and that means $$$ on delivery. also, running trains is half the fun of playing the game. so a long run gives you more play time and of course, enjoy the amazing scenery both natural and built. add a few passing sidings into the run and several friends running their own trains will make for exciting times. planning meets so players can pass and not come together on a bridge or in some remote corner and make a big mess.

That session was just plain fun. I had to rebuilt my track three times around the yard and sawmill because Eureka is a problem child with the track. Maybe it would work better if I would put in a wye at the sawmill myself. Please post more of these interesting videos. Shout-out to Fleischmann model trains, had a uncle that had a big track in his basement with a load of those, great fun as a kid & really nice looking models. Like all good model train enthusiasts the guy was a little 'positively crazy' too, not sure if he used some guide or did it himself, but he had some insane hand built computer from basic parts that looked at resistance of the rails on a few dozen places on the track to give his normal desktop computer a perfect representation of all train locations, then because that wasn't crazy enough he modified all his locomotives & switches to have a attiny and a relay so he could control each train and switch from his desktop, that stuff blew my mind as a kid. Sadly he's no longer around but i'm sure he would've loved this game.

It could be interesting to design a railroad with a gravity run in mind. Maybe you have an engine doing a circular route, drags some cars up to the top of the run, drops some of the cars not required for the rest of the run at the top, which then gravity run back to the start (loaded or unloaded) and are then collected by the engine the next time it comes round the run and are pulled back to the top again.

"When you're a kid, model trains are the best" I mean, they're pretty cool even for adults. Everything you're doing in Railroads Online and then some can be done on a scale model layout. There's a club I go to that has a huge N-scale layout that runs from Pittsburg to Columbus (although only Pittsburg is modeled, Columbus is the staging yard) with a bunch of industries and two separate marshaling yards along the route. I go during their open house events (since I haven't registered for membership yet) and I can bring my own equipment.

I still think 2% grade with a shunt yard up top would be better. Using the cooke to bring more up per run and then you wouldn't have to run the line as much but instead just shunt in the beams / planks as needed and unload the iron ore.

There is a railway going up a small mountain/large hill with a flat top and a bunch of facilities there. It goes at about 30-40%, and there are two cars connected by a line so when one is going up it is pulled by the one that's going down, with a siding in the middle where they go past eachother. I think that *could* be a viable way to get a mine line if we could use lines like that, just push down a full set down, have it pull up an empty one and shunt it around with a porter.
@quentintin1
@quentintin1 2 жыл бұрын
it's called a funicular and it's mostly used as passenger service for hauling mine produce downhill to treatment or shipping plants there is already a system existing, they are called ropeways, you have a series on gondolas attached on a cable that run continuously, you load them up at the mine and let them go down, pulling the empty cars up the last ropeway in England is used to haul shale and works with gravity like that, Tom Scott did a video on it here on the youdubs

What the developer needs to do in this game which is done in other games and works quite well. Is that they need implement a grid system over the top of the map throughout it and allow us to snap to the grid while at the same time making curves. If they did this it would make it very easy to lay our tracks and have them connect properly without any problems. The current system which they are using is very clumsy at best and makes it extremely difficult for us the users to properly lay out the track and not have any problems occur along the way. Because if this was to be done in real world methods. A bunch of people would be out taking a transom measuring the land and planning exactly where to go and have every single point properly laid out from point a to point B to build a track. Because as it stands right now we the users have very limited use of tools and it makes it extremely difficult for us to lay out the tracks and this is one of the reasons why I am not playing the game. The developer needs to seriously start thinking about putting a grid system on the map and stop beating around the bush. Cause if they did people would find the game more enjoyable they could push the development along further and the game would be selling better. Plus I think it would actually minimize a lot of unnecessary debugging that is going on because of this very clumsy system they have set up.
