Hey everyone and welcome back to more Railroads Online! Today we are back on Hyce's server to check out a proper 2% line from the smelter to the iron mine! A lot of people have been insisting that this is the way to go so Hyce decided to show me just how ridiculous a low grade line actually is!
Check out Hyce on KZbin: / markhuber

I strongly believe kAN is purposely playing at other worlds so he doesn't have to make the Y at the sawmill :)

People complain that it shouldn't be more than 2%, when narrow gauge railroads/railways (as hyce said) typically ran 3%, 4% or 5%+, up to at most ten or so percent before a rack rail became necessary.

Im 16 and I had wooden trains at home with a table just for it. It was great. Trains and dinosaurs are everything children need.

Trains like the ones up pikes peak and mt Washington (also called "cog railways") are amazing fun to ride, unfortunately I believe the one on pikes peak is currently closed, though I do recommend going up even if you don't get the chance to go up by train

I've got a circuit that goes from the sawmill, to the iron mine, to the smelter, and back up to the sawmill. That has 2.5% max grades on the uphill part and is about as direct as you can get. That's possible just because the sawmill is midway in height between them. (The part from the iron mine down to the smelter is max 4%, IIRC)

I've been to the Cog railway at Mt. Washington with my dad and it is super steep and cool and all of the tilted engines are amazing to look at

I love Hyce's whistle discipline. I should learn those codes myself.

So, my Grandpa loved trains, and he got us- all grandkids- the toy trains you talked about. Thank you for reminding me about them! I loved playing with them... I honestly don't care that they were unrealistic- so much fun.

my idea regarding a 2% or less grade wherever possible is to get the most out of whatever engine you have.

That session was just plain fun. I had to rebuilt my track three times around the yard and sawmill because Eureka is a problem child with the track. Maybe it would work better if I would put in a wye at the sawmill myself.

You need a 45 degrees or even 80 degrees rail to quickly go down from there to the closest useful point with minimal power usage. This way, you could send autonomous trains on a 2% incline, use the cheapest locomotive (maybe even the $150 one) to get to the foot of the mountain, then use stairs to get to the place from where you have a steep downhill rail, then catch the trains as they arrive to the station (or have someone else there processing the trains, like you did with Moonbo or Dapper a few days ago).

Shout-out to Fleischmann model trains, had a uncle that had a big track in his basement with a load of those, great fun as a kid & really nice looking models. Like all good model train enthusiasts the guy was a little 'positively crazy' too, not sure if he used some guide or did it himself, but he had some insane hand built computer from basic parts that looked at resistance of the rails on a few dozen places on the track to give his normal desktop computer a perfect representation of all train locations, then because that wasn't crazy enough he modified all his locomotives & switches to have a attiny and a relay so he could control each train and switch from his desktop, that stuff blew my mind as a kid. Sadly he's no longer around but i'm sure he would've loved this game.
