"The first time I ever really listened to Kyle Kulinski’s show was in the back of a cab last summer. The driver had his phone hooked up through the stereo and was pumping out an episode through the car speakers - loudly, as if looking to convert a captive audience.
“Do you like Kyle Kulinski?”
The driver, Ahmed, was a recent immigrant and apparently a die-hard fan of Secular Talk, the political talk show that Kulinski broadcasts on KZbin. I told him, yes, in fact. I do like Kulinski, had come across his show several years ago, and, all things considered, he seemed pretty good.
“He understands what we’re up against,” Ahmed said. “Like Bernie.”
But I was surprised to hear Kulinski’s name mentioned in the same breath as Bernie Sanders, particularly with such adoration. Because what I did remember about Kulinski’s show struck me as mostly capital-P “progressive” takes on the news - the left wing of the Netroots crowd more than the democratic socialism Sanders has popularized.
It’s an impression that wasn’t entirely incorrect.
“I have no time for philosophical, airy bullshit,” Kulinski tells me from his home in Westchester, New York. “I don’t want to hear about Lenin. I don’t want to hear about Marx. I just want a super plainspoken, straightforward agenda with a straightforward way of selling it.”
With over 800,000 subscribers and nearly 670 million total views on KZbin, selling a progressive agenda is clearly something Kulinski knows how to do - even Democracy Now, the long-standing flagship of progressive media, cannot match his reach on the platform. Chapo Trap House can certainly boast a wildly devoted fan base (and a not insignificant degree of media influence), but their audience is roughly half the size of Kulinski’s.
While Secular Talk might be more likely to be looped in with the progressive networks around Air America and Pacifica alums like Sam Seder than the more resolutely socialist world, Kulinski’s fiery rhetoric, razor-sharp class instincts, and knack for withering takedowns sets him apart from his peers. Judging by his rhetoric alone, he’s closer to a Eugene Debs than a Chris Hayes.
But unlike Hayes, Amy Goodman, or his friend Cenk Uygur of The Young Turks - who began airing Secular Talk on his web network seven years ago - the thirty-two-year-old Kulinski is virtually invisible in the mainstream media. Despite his enormous fan base, his show has never once been mentioned in the obligatory trend pieces on “the Millennial Left” pumped out by the prestige media. Nor has Kulinski’s name ever popped up at all in the New York Times, Vox, the New Yorker, New York Magazine, or the Washington Post, despite his leading role in cofounding Justice Democrats, the organization widely credited with sweeping Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and the rest of “the Squad” to power.
Just last week, his Wikipedia page was deleted. The reason? “There is very simply no [reliable source] coverage of this person,” according to one moderator. In new media, he’s king - the Sean Hannity of the Berniecrat left. In old media, he’s nobody.
I suspect there are a few reasons for that. There is nothing “cool” about Kulinski’s show. (As a friend put it, “‘Welcome to Secular Talk’ sounds like something you’d hear on Egyptian radio.”) His no-nonsense social-democratic politics won’t get him much cred with the Full Communism crowd. He records his show not in Brooklyn or Los Angeles, but in a studio he built himself in his modest Westchester home. His hair is too groomed and his taste in clothes too preppy to qualify as “Dirtbag Left.” Nor has he ever attended an n+1 release party. “Not only have I not attended one,” he says, “I have no idea what that means.”
And yet he’s astonishingly plugged-in for a young man in the suburbs. Wondering how Sanders ended up on the Joe Rogan Experience? Kulinski, a frequent guest on Rogan’s wildly popular show, introduced them. “You make the most sense to me,” Rogan told Kulinski on a recent episode. “You’re a normal person.”
Much like Sanders himself, Kulinski’s show has a massive audience that just doesn’t compute with our media’s understanding of “what the kids want” or even “what the left-wing kids want.”
It’s probably for the best - the very woke and very WASP-ish decorum haunting much of the media world is nowhere to be found in Secular Talk. “Corporate Democrats over-focus on identity as a trick to divert you from the issues that unite us all - class issues,” he said on a recent episode. “That Raytheon decided they don’t hate gays or trans people - frankly, I don’t really give a shit what their take on that is..."

*The Nazis were indisputably right-wing* In the months after Hitler took power, SA and *Gestapo agents went from door to door looking for Hitler’s enemies. They arrested Socialists, Communists, trade union leaders, and others who had spoken out against the Nazi party; some were murdered* By the summer of 1933, the Nazi party was the only legal political party in Germany. Nearly all organized opposition to the regime had been eliminated. Democracy was dead in Germany *However, the assumption that because the word “socialist” appeared in the party’s name and socialist words and ideas popped up in the writings and speeches of top Nazis then the Nazis must have been actual socialists is naive and ahistorical* By that twisted logic the Democratic People's Republic of Korea must be all about Democracy because it's all right in their name *What the evidence shows, on the contrary, is that Nazi Party leaders paid mere lip service to socialist ideals on the way to achieving their one true goal: raw, right-wing totalitarian power* Sometimes the claim is bandied about that the Nazis were a left-wing party on economic questions, perhaps because the Nazis were called “National socialists”. This is flatly and completely wrong and a form of pseudo-historiography. Here’s why: *The Nazi party was built on right-wing voters and a right-wing support base* There are many disputes about the nature of Hitler’s voting base. *What isn’t under dispute though is that prior to voting Nazi, Nazi voters voted for centre-right and far-right parties, or didn’t vote at all. Support for the Nazis did not come from disaffected left-wing or centre-left voters, but from right-wing voters frustrated with the existing parties of the right* In my view this point alone is decisive. The meaning of right-wing and left-wing is not an ahistorical abstraction, it’s created by the behaviour of people and institutions. *The right-wing citizens of Germany implicitly recognised the Nazis as right-wing by voting for them, case closed* 2. The Nazis literally invented privatisation: The Nazis were responsible for huge privatisation programs. The extent of their privatisations was enormous, but it was particularly vast when compared with other countries at the time, who were generally moving in the opposite direction. *The privatisations of Nazi Germany may indeed have been the first mass privatisations of public property in history* and included “Steel, mining, banking, shipyard, ship-lines, and railways.” More on how Nazis bucked historical trends by privatising when no one else was here: www.ub.edu/graap/nazi.pdf 3. Nazi policies greatly increased income inequality: Income inequality spiked under Hitler, as was observed even at the time. More here: piketty.pse.ens.fr/files/capitalisback/CountryData/Germany/Other/Pre1950Series/RefsHistoricalGermanAccounts/Sweezy39.pdf 4. Capital as a share of factor income also spiked under Hitler, at the expense of wages: Factor income describes the division between the factors of production, with land receiving rent, capital receiving profit and labour receiving wages. The capital share, or profit as a proportion of total income, increased by about 50% in Nazi Germany and was much higher than the US’s capital share at the time. See the below graph from Capital in the Twenty-First Century reproduced in a Jacobin article by Corey Robin: I’m sorry if there’s not much in the way of Belles-lettres here. If I am blunt it is for a purpose. The Nazis were right-wing. Anyone who tells you otherwise is wrong, much in the same way it is wrong to say that the world is flat, six-thousand years old, or made of cheese. kzbin.info/www/bejne/jmrIq2mtaqeIg68 “Secular schools can never be tolerated because such a school has no religious instruction and a general moral instruction without a religious foundation is built on air; consequently, all character training and religion must be derived from faith . . . We need believing people.” ~ H!tler

Though I don't disagree in general, I just can't help but attempt to illuminate that this notion of "authoritarianism" is insanely reductive and idealistic, describing nothing of the _content_ but merely appealing to the form. M4A as a quick example here is technically "authoritarian" in this 1-dimentional sense, but it's also like...pretty obviously a universal benefit to public health. The charge of "authoritarian" _on its own_ has no answer to what is the _only_ political question: cui bono? Who benefits? People can read from Stalin and Mao to learn various things and appear "as a follower" because they recognize that these people actually materially changed world history. Except what lessons are these people trying to learn? How to cause a "genocide" through a famine? Though people like Timothy Snyder are actively trying to flatten all nuance in this regard (compare his book Bloodlands to his earlier works where a modicum of nuance was still untainted by an ideological tunnel-vision), to think in terms of essentialized individualized "great man" disregards the _actual_ tidal material forces that these focal figures embody (or actively suppress). It destroys actual genuine attempts at understanding where we are and how we got here in favor of illusory mythology that flatters our egos. _"Men make their own history, but they do not make it as they please; they do not make it under self-selected circumstances, but under circumstances existing already, given and transmitted from the past. The tradition of all dead generations weighs like a nightmare on the brains of the living."_ - some guy Having arguments about discrete entirely ahistorical outcomes without any context whatsoever is at the absolute least misleading and an uncoincidentally useful red herring toward any project of collective escape velocity out of the ouroboros of resentment-fueled spectator "politics" that passively observes its own cannibalistic annihilation as purely entertainment, to the point of cheering such grotesque realities on; it's an oversimplification of world history and the complex actors amongst it, and comes of as petty dehumanization. I find it insanely frustrating the way that Stalin is spoken about when literally everyone who talks about him dehistoticises the events, and puts an entire socio political economy on the shoulders of a single individual. Stalin was in power immediately after the revolution, and died almost immediately after WWII for which his decisions literally ended European fascism. It's not surprising that he would have a militaristic or "authoritarian" view when you keep this in mind, as he was constantly surrounded by real enemies - including those from within. He had limited resources to make these timely decisions. His choices cannot be all perfect, and most importantly they were not in a vacuum. You might think people wanting to build a better world would want to understand these things _descriptively_ in order to avoid them should a similar situation present itself, but their eagerness to do precisely the opposite and dismiss any critical consideration merely to perform a hollow projection of ignorant piety usually betrays any good faith intentions. One doesn't have to endorse Stalin to understand why he did the things that he did, which were not for any non-explanations of "madness" or whatever, but in response to _actual material conditions_ - conditions which are pretty explicitly laid out and laid bare by simply looking at what these people wrote and how that aligned (or didn't) with their actions. For example, never in such a absurdly simplistic framing of insulated normative judgement do we understand what was _explicitly understood_ by the Bolsheviks to be a contingent geopolitical necessity for any long-term success for the USSR, which was the issue of industrialization since the Tsar's Russia was a feudal backwater, and a cultivated alliance with the socialist/communist movement in Germany (which echoes today for _material_ reasons, e.g. Nord Stream, etc.) as the German sailor uprisings post-WWI 1918 gave way to catalyze an almost complete socialist revolution. Instead however, a false sense of security contrived by duplicitous state actors eventually reversed course in its tactically plotted coercion, culminating in the paramilitary state violence which targeted the eradication of such insurgent revolutionary fervor and eventually reversing/recapitulating the bourgeois state in Weimar and merely kicking out the Kaiser rather than serving as the industrial base for the international socialist aligned project which was what the bolsheviks were _explicitly_ counting on, as without that industrial capacity and ideological alignment it knew European powers would attempt to utilize any chaos/destabilization (corroborated by the extensive funding/arming the white army for instance, hell Wilson directly sent US troops in the Polar Bear Expedition) claim more territory and more importantly crush any alternatives to the soulless mechanical logic of capitalism's creative self-destruction (reminder: we're literally destroying the earth. yay. we'll probably destroy ourselves first though...). The main point being, there is 0 supporting evidence that things like the Holodomor famine was intentional (it directly impacted far beyond an insulated controlled area in fact), but rather a historical inevitability that was merely exacerbated by undeniably forceful imposition of state capitalism towards creating that centralized industrial base. This was unavoidable blowback of that intensely directed industrialization effort and no doubt it was devastating, but adding this geopolitical context and its further continuity culminating in that WWII thing (in which the USSR is the core military force of the allies' effort, capturing Berlin and sacrificing 27 _million_ to fight fascism, explicitly and intentionally for both political/ideological/materially understood reasons), was there really an alternative that preserves that outcome if we consider any sort of counterfactual? I mean, it actually kinda did go that way, in the most important ways the nazis didn't really lose WWII, the only distinction between the US neoliberal corporate empire and the third Reich fascist project seems more aesthetic/ideological than anything else, chopping off the viscerally ultranationalist id in favor of a generic "cost-effective" corporate sheen (serving "the market" gods essentially; an unconscious ideological drive to maximize "efficiency" aka capital accumulation in neoclassical/neoliberal econ), trading an explicitly racist ideological lens for one guided by that drive toward technocratic "efficiency". The US positioning itself as the "consumer of last resort" at the end of the global supply chain to absorb inevitable overproduction of capitalism through cheap consumption or of course our favorite activity of war/arms sales (military Keynesianism, the only button we can push clearly), launching itself to hegemony post-WWII via imposing the Bretton-Woods international financial system with the US dollar as the "global reserve currency" using the leverage of being the only industrialized nation-state not bombed to shit and taking the imperial baton from the British and their pound sterling. I mean my god, far from hyperbole there's a direct continuity there, the US protecting nazi leadership ratlines into South America and putting tons of _literal_ SS officers like Otto Skorzeny (basically nazi james bond, Paladin Group), Reinhard Gehlen (Gehlen Organization), Klaus "butcher of Lyon" Barbie (active in France and then directly involved with the US terror network over the global south Operation Condor in Bolivia), et al. directly on the CIA's payroll for their anticommunism "counterinsurgency" bona fides (ie terrorism). Infamous pedophile Paul Schafer another notable extremely consequential SS figure, his "Colonia Dignidad" acting as a node for Condor in Chile to cultivate ideological alignment instrumental in Pinochet's ascension, the _first_ 9/11 in 1973 overthrowing democratically elected Allende. Effectively the Monroe Doctrine 2.0, the CIA of course acting as the (and with the) SS 2.0 for transnational corporate/finance capital, extended further in its global latticework in the "stay behind" networks established in Operation Gladio and wielded as a part of its "strategy of tension"; basically acting as NATO's covert enforcement preserving its utility as a tool of political domination over Europe keeping _"the Americans in, the Germans down, and the Russians out"_ as succinctly put by NATO's first secretary general (relevant in regards to NATO's role in catalyzing the current war in Ukraine with the OUN, particularly the OUN-B, and all the intelligence cultivation of fascist paramilitary there and across the region; Svoboda, Right-Sector, AZOV, etc.). Anyway, clearly I digress, point being I think we need to critically evaluate reality in the face of our pretty undeniable political paralysis. Hopefully that made sense and I await the 800 million geniuses that avoid thinking about any of this by calling me a "tankie", whatever the fuck that means lol... To echo Rosa Luxemburg from 1918 Germany, before of course being executed by the freikorps paramilitary (later becoming the SS, shocker) at the behest of Ebert's ostensibly _social democratic_ SPD party, almost immediately resonating the truth of such a succinct political dichotomy to this day: *_Socialism or_* [continued] *_barbarism._* _"The philosophers have only interpreted the world, in various ways. The point, however, is to change it."_ - some guy

@Disentropic1 Жыл бұрын
@@Bisquick A little too much time on tangential details, not enough elaboration of your stated purpose. Yes, political paralysis is a problem. Yes, orthodoxy is liberal capitalism. Yes, capitalism can be expected to ally itself to fascism without much compunction. No, you shouldn't equivocate between the two. Yes, history is glossed over with simple moralistic lessons that rob us of a potentially necessary, deeper understanding. My question is: what exactly do we learn by your proposed reconsideration of how to evaluate someone like Stalin? Where does this lead and what is the intention behind it? The basic human intuition to be skeptical about a leader thought to have caused many unnecessary deaths is a good one, and it should be contravened only when a clear and explicit case is made as to the benefits of such a rehabilitation. The vague suggestion that something is there to be learned seems completely insufficient as justification for your approach. Desperate people do desperate things, as you rightly point out. They reach desperately for power because they feel its urgency. This means not infrequently that they cast aside what they think of as petty concerns - such as the safety and rights of common people who lack the power wielded over them. Just how desperate are you in your analysis? As desperate as the poor worker who fears the economic ramifications of immigration and becomes a neo-nazi? As desperate as Stalin? As desperate as Hitler himself to seize the power to protect his tribe from the threat he perceived? Courage and good will are the basis of good politics. To be driven by fear into aimless malice is no objective for the left.

Loads of conservatives and people on the left use this flawed logic tbh. They think politics takes place only within their abstract and highly flawed definitions. Politics in the real world is messy and the most important feature is about who supports or puts the political regime in place. Everything else isn't as important as that. Conservatives support Trump, Kanye supports Trump. Kanye is in the same political ground swell as conservatives and Nick Fuentes.

An acquaintance of mine who likes to fancy themselves as "above the fray" and a "classical Liberal" sort of does something like this. They keep wanting me to accept that centrist Democrats are on my "side" of the political spectrum because anything remotely liberal is, by their definitions, "progressive", which means they are on my "side". I'm like... "wha???" It's like... Yeah, some centrist Democrats pay some lip service to LGBTQ+ among other things, so that makes them more "progressive" than most conservatives. But, I'm baffled how they think that there is no difference between "yas, slay, more gay trans black drone pilots bombing foreign children" and "hey, I think we should reduce our military presence and invest in our own infrastructure and it'd be a pleasant coincidence if the people put into these positions of power happen to be part of marginalized groups".

In fact it would be more accurately translated as NATIONALIST 'socialism'. And they also neglect the fact that National Socialist Germany and Fascist Italy both sent troops to Spain in the mid 1930s during the Spanish civil war to support Franco's RIGHT WING rebellion against the elected Republican government. Why would 'Left wing' movements do something like that?! I would say Rubin is just chasing cash fleeing to the right, but I remember him back on TYT and he so often, almost every time he hosted, came out of left field with some batshit half baked presumption and be mercilessly corrected on the spot. Like "no, that's wrong, because.." I think what he's really chasing is a group that pats him on the back and overlooks his nonsense because it's just another megaphone in their pocket. Although with Rubin it's more like just him singing in the shower into an imaginary microphone

‘Grouping people by race, religion, & sexuality? These are all the *bad* ideas’ It’s weird that Rubin doesn’t see that all these bad ideas were and still are the hallmarks of the right wing. When the left wing plays ID pol with these topics it is only as a reaction to the right wing affirming the significance of grouping these. Of the two sides, the right wing is the only side that would still play ID pol in the absence of the other political wing.

@@FxckRacism Firstly, I'm not 100% certain what written work you're referencing since Marx didn't write anything titled "A World without Jews" but I'm fairly certain you're intending to reference his piece "On the Jewish Question." EDIT: I have confirmed that "A World without Jews" is the title of a version of "On the Jewish Question" as translated by Dagobert D. Runes. Second, to suggest that "On the Jewish Question" establishes the basis of Marxism is flatly incorrect. Marx wrote "On the Jewish Question" in direct response to a piece written by Bruno Bauer (who was no form of Socialist or Marxist, and was in fact a Hegelian) titled "The Jewish Question." Bauer asserted the necessary dissolution of religion under Marxism and interjected that this would be twice the task for the Jewish that it was for Christians, and that Marxism was therefore oppressive to the Jewish faith. However at no point does Marx argue in favor of an ethnostate. That is a pure fabrication you're making up out of nowhere because you don't know what you're talking about. In fact, the entire effort Marx makes against Bauer is in the effort of demonstrating that Judaism has no greater incompatibility with Communism than Christianity has, and that Communism does not necessitate the full dissolution of religion. However none of that latter paragraph is relevant because that essay from Marx is nothing to do with laying the *basis* of Communism. The establishment of an ethnostate is in no way a base component of Marxism, and that essay by Marx had nothing to do with laying out the fundamentals of Marxism. Most importantly, nobody claimed that Marx himself wasn't a bigot. Marx leans on the same Jewish stereotypes that Bauer asserts. It was the turn of the century and there's a reason they weren't the only people writing on the topic of the "Jewish Question." Isaac Newton was similarly a nut who believed in biblical numerology, but that doesn't make biblical numerology a cornerstone of calculus or kinematic equations. Ethnonationalism is not the "basis for Marxism" and to suggest it is demonstrates only that you're being disingenuous. Ethnonationalism is a right wing ideal that traces its heritage through early fascist thought.

I want to mention that in Ancient Greece one of the most important things to the Greeks was "Know thyself," which is self-knowledge, self-reflection, self-awareness, or whatever you want to call it. Self-knowledge is something the Ancient Greeks prized above all else! They saw self-knowledge as a journey. Something that needs to be discovered. The Ancient Greeks have been so influential in shaping the USA's own government, you would think self-reflection would be more important. Know thyself comes from the Temple of Apollo at Delphi where it is written.

This why I like Secular talk. OF all the youtube commentators, Kyle is the only one who at least tries to understand different perspectives. I used to think the same way. politics being a left to right spectrum and a authoritarian to liberatarian spectrum. But, then I started talking to people outside of USA and EU and I have seen that this is not how anyone else does politics. For most people, politics is way more diverse and complex that the myopic view we have here. And it also very personal. Like people dont engage in labels. I have also noticed that this is one of the main reasons why talking about politics in not so toxic in these countries as it has become in USA. Because people arent having a left vs right debate delineated along partisan narratives. They are having debates to problem solve issues and people from different political ideologies provide different perspectives. The entire way people approach discussion, thought process and problem solving and politics in general is completely different in the rest of the world. There is so much space for discussion and nuance. And I feel more free to express my opinions and have even had some brilliant conversations regarding american issues which I struggle to have here where people are just screaming over each other to prove they are right. Also, people love long form debates there (which I do to) and will factually verify so much it legit feels like they are doing full on research unlike TLDR mentality here. It just makes our approach to politics seem stunted. There is so much more to it. One thing I learnt - a new perspective can add 10 IQ points to your discussion. Always keep that in mind. Everything has different perspectives and world is way more complex than we have been told and we have a lot to learn
