I have to disagree with Myke about challenging Ye more. Ye has tons of interviews with people that do that. The reason this interview was so special is the same reason why you say you've never heard him funny or poignant like this, he had the rare opportunity and time to show it and explain himself here with no contest. Thats how art has to be made some times.
@Billary3 жыл бұрын
Yeah you can tell that when Kanye's rambling about something his train of thought takes you on a wild ride, and whenever somebody challenges what he just said he has to stop and switch gears into argument mode and it kinda detours from what he was saying. When he's in that train of thought, I think he really is just saying what's on his mind in that moment and he might start talking about some weird shit that he hasn't really fully thought out yet. A lot of Ye's best work is when he can take an idea and bring it to life, and then polish it up. For example, people freaked out when he said "400 years of slavery? sounds like a choice", but when he put out the song "New Slaves" where he's basically talking about the exact same concept people understood what he was talking about more. Same idea, but New Slaves elaborated on it more and made it more clear, and regardless of whether you agree or disagree with his point his expression of the idea & argument is night and day when you compare what he said in the interview to the song.

@@Billary i get that, but that meandering still leads to misunderstanding. That's just a fact. Doing a poor job of explaining half-baked thoughts then getting mad at people for not being able to piece together your broader point later on isn't the most productive either. You're inevitably going to lose some people that way. My issue with his "new slaves concept" is that he claimed to have a problem with people being a slave to brand names when really and truly that wasn't his issue - he was just mad at the time that he, and more broadly black people, didn't have enough of a seat at the table. Clearly he has no problem with people flocking to his own brand instead of the brands he was criticizing.
@Billary3 жыл бұрын
@@Chrisratata Yeah I'm not saying that it's necessarily a good way of communicating or that his views are accurate, I'm just saying that's how he communicates. And if the end goal is to get more thoughts out of his head or attempt to understand what the concept he's trying to convey, then the best thing for an interviewer to do is to just let him talk. So it comes down to the wishes/intentions of the audience or the interviewer to decide if they just want to peek deeper inside his brain or if they want to call him out on his bullshit- they're both valid ways of looking at it.
@Chrisratata3 жыл бұрын
@@Billary agreed. I'm moreso speaking to the types that claim that anyone that doesn't understand him is just being a hater. Someone that has little interest in him and his music isn't going to sit up and listen to every interview and song of his in its entirety trying to make sense of what he truly meant. And to your point, that's especially the case if they're just flat out not a fan of his music - no one like that is going to listen to an interview then start listening to songs to broaden their understanding of an artist they don't care for. That's not hate, it's just human nature: people listen to the type of music that they like and steer away from what they don't.

The one thing I really disliked from Ye on this interview (besides the red hat shit) is how he brought up Fred Hampton and then went on to talk about black capitalism as a solution to the black struggle while Fred literally said the opposite. Just weird. It seems to me like he's aware of the issues of class inequality but doesn't know how to actually address them. Somebody in his inner circle needs to talk to him about socialism.
@Dragonmyth693 жыл бұрын
I'd venture to guess that Ye is probably ignorant to the deeper philosophical implications of supporting one system over another and is just positing an expansion and democratization of what he's experienced working in his own life- capitalism. Capitalism is so deeply ingrained in modern western thought & culture, it's hard for most to even conceive of solutions outside of it.
