I ❤ de4Daagse. Last year I walked this course together with my mom. A small explanation on the colours along the way. Blue day is because you walk between the rivers, pink Wednesday is because everyone is celebrated ❤, Green Thursday as you walk through forests and across the green hills of Groesbeek. Orange Friday as orange is the Dutch colour and orange is also the colour of the 4Daagse flag. The st. Anna street which is the last street towards the finish is called Via Gladiola during this week, as every walker receives Gladiolen (gladiolas) as a reward.

Best even to own two pair, nothing worse then trying to get your feet in shoes that are still soggy with sweat from the day before (so also don't take them off mid walk). I just stumbled upon this video. I'm from Nijmegen and walked the 40k in 2011 at age 16. At 50:45 you happened to zoom in on the bell tower of the church where my granddad attended, sang in the choir, and where his funeral was. I was incredibly close with him and he was the first loved on in my life to pass away. He died on the 25th of June 2011 and was buried a few days later. So that small zoom is very special to me. I had completely forgotten that I walked the Vierdaagse so shortly after his death, together with my mother, who had just lost her father. Thanks for making me realise that. For both of you, finishing this march is a real achievement! Especially for Kara, doing it untrained, that's incredibly impressive. Hats off!

I did the Nijmegen March when I was in the US Army back in 1985. We were a group of 16 enlisted personnel, plus 1 Officer. Quite a few countries send groups of military personnel to do this march. A lot of people think that doing 25 miles a day cannot be that hard, but I will tell you, it is quite grueling. Plus, we were dressed in our fatigues, wearing boots and carrying a 25lb backpack. They have medical tents throughout the march and the #1 issue they dealt with was blisters. Out of all the various military groups that were there, our group came in 2nd. The people of the Netherlands were incredible. You cannot ask for. better hosts for a massive event. I have a lot of respect for Kara and Nate for taking on this 100 mile walk.

@@egonjgf7015 It took me the first day of constant adjustment on how to deal with the rucksack digging into my shoulders. For some reason, all the practice we did leading up to going and doing the actual march did not help me find a good way to carry it. During the march, I finally would alternate from having my thumbs hooked under the straps in front of the top of my chest pulling it out slightly, and would just constantly spread the straps out all over my shoulders for differing amounts of time. That helped tremendously. Good for you being able to do it twice, I was rotated back stateside the beginning of 1986 so did not have that opportunity again.

My father is a retired Colonel (38 yrs in) He did the Nijmegen (pr: Nye-MAY-Gun) March in a WWII Canadian Airborne officer's uniform when he was 80. He was given food and drink any time he needed it. People came out and waved Canadian flags at him when they heard he was coming (It was on the radio)

Beutiful! ...The people are very grateful to all the help from all allied in WWII, - but, there's an extra strong connection to Canada in the Nijmegen area. Every year I participated myself it was a highligth to be at the ceremony at the Canadion War Cemetry (I was a norwegian military). Me and miltary from many counties experienced the extra strong connection between the dutch and canadians. I was even so honored one year when I was invited to be in the honorary line-up for the tribute at the Canadian War Cemetry - in memory to the Canadian Forces and what the previous generations has done for us all. And also: that we are stronger together! So it doesn't suprise me that they waved canadian flags to your father !

If you phonetically spell Nijmegen (which you did fine by the way), don’t forget the last G is the typical hard dutch g. So it isn’t ‘gun’, as in a pistol. You know what I mean.

For the gladioli: there’s a saying in Dutch: “de dood of de gladiolen” that we stole from Latin. So every time we accomplish something amazingly death defying (like the 4daagse) we give each other gladioli. It’s also why the 4daagse finishes on Via Gladiola

Dutch follower here, so the short answer as to why the cucumbers were there is mainly because they are filling, have vitamins, are cheap but most importantly are delicious and refreshing to eat. We almost always serve it during parties too just because it has a sweet taste and basically fits with anything and everything you have drunk/ eaten so far. So I think people just do it because of the ease of getting cucumbers, the price of it and the ease of cutting it and putting it in a bowl for other people to snack on.
@ohjajohh4 ай бұрын
Yeah, and price/quantity wise it's also one of the best picks I think. A cucumber costs 50 cents, and you can get 25+ slices out of it. So it costs less than 2 cent's a slice.

Thank you for this video. I've never heard of your channel before. I was with the Red Cross in Nijmegen during the Vierdaagse and that's why KZbin recommended the video to me. I liked to see the Vierdaagse from the perspective of a walker. You even captured my "best side" at the medical station. (42:20). Congratulations on finishing the marches! Really good job. It shows again that when you put your mind to it you can do a lot more then you think. And I"m glad my colleagues of the massage could help you along! Some advice for the next time you come to Nijmegen for the Vierdaagse (if ever) and maybe for some other people that are reading this: Make sure you eat and drink enough Train and at least walk some km on your shoes Wear socks without seems. The seems can cause blisters You can go to a red cross station to have your blisters treated and your feet taped. This is always free. We are glad to help! Also with any other medical problem. We are all volunteers but there is always a doctor pressent for medical care.

You guys are amazing! As a professional walker, a.k.a. a full-time tour guide and a previous endurance athlete. I know and kind of feel what you’re going through and you’re amazing. Couple of tips for next time because I know as a fan of your channel you’re gonna do something like this again. Bring two pairs of walking shoes alternate each day. The blisters will rub in different places. Also look into some blister stick stuff to kind of lube up everything before you go and walk. Also avoid cotton socks, Smartwool or darn tough or something similar really helps. At the end of the day roll out with a foam roller your massage gun great but the foam roller will help too. Also look into arnica arnica gel or the supplement and just you’re amazing. You guys have each other‘s back and I hope to see your next crazy challenge because those are some of my favorite videos to watch.
