I think you may have misread the culture in the alps. The people who live and work in the mountains think this hike is no biggie because they are mountaineers - they grew up with crampons on. You need to take what they say and think about your own (very little) alpine experience.
@Enya21035 жыл бұрын
Absolutely right! But: that hike is even for us here in the mountains dangerous and noone here would ever do something stupid like in this video! My sisters boyfriend, who grew up in the mountains and is in the mountain rescue, has to risk his life (these hikes are dangerous for anyone, only do them when you know exactly how to behave in which situation) in order to save inexperienced people like them regularly. And regularly the people can't be saved and are already dead. When you are in the mountains it is your own responsibility to inform yourself and to prepare. There is so much information online about hikes like that!

My friend's 18 year old son died on a solo hike in the Ontario wilderness this summer. I don't know if he fell or got attacked by a bear. But he died alone and probably in pain on a safe, popular hike. He took a satellite phone but was dead before rescuers could get to him. Accidents can happen even when you're prepared and experienced. But going off by yourselves in the mountains is beyond reckless. Have adventure but don't go into the wilderness by yourselves when you don't know what to expect. Pushing your limits is good, pushing the bounds of sanity is not.

I'm glad you put this story out there. But I think there's a big difference between risking your career/business/life plan and risking your life on a hike. Glacial travel is not hiking - it is a different beast altogether. It requires technical skill and equipment that goes well beyond what is required for a dayhike. Simply because you can walk up to it does not mean it is acceptable risk. It would be like going for a swim, feeling good, then throwing on some scuba equipment and doing a dive without prior training or guidance. I know that with your dive experience, you probably wouldn't recommend anyone do such a thing.

Blue-white-blue marked routes are alpine trails. "To hike Alpine routes, climbers need physical fitness and good equipment, sure-footedness, and on some routes also a head for heights. They also need a good sense of direction and know to use maps and compass.[1][3] If they don't have alpine experience, they should use a mountain guide. Clothing has to be weatherproof. The real problem people face is not knowing their decision points - the "I've already got this far, so I may as well push on" syndrome. The hardest thing to do is to stop, go back, regroup and come at it better prepared. I live where it gets to -40 in the winter. People die, and usually although they were unprepared, there were several times they could have changed course and wouldn't have. They drove out in the storm. When the car stopped they decided to walk for it. They didn't die because of one bad decision, or because they didn't know what they were up against. Usually they die because they followed a string of decisions that could have been changed. In your case, once you had got to the hut, you realized you weren't prepared properly. You should have waited to hike down with other that were. When you did leave and the weather turned you should have turned back and gone back to the hut. This isn't criticism. I've ended up stuck on a cliff with no climbing gear, and on a small boat on a middle of a stormy, very busy shipping channel by doing the vary same sort of thing. "Just a little farther", "almost there", "once we get to the other side" etc. But people don't make one decision, they make a long chain of them. And we need to learn that chain can be broken at any point. We aren't commited just because we made one bad decision, even unwittingly, at the begining.

Exactly! I got my scientific diving certification with a set of teachers who are called into examine what went into local divers' deaths. They said it was almost never one thing but a series of small, seemingly innocuous things that compounded until it was too big of a problem. Stopping and assessing the situation along that path of errors could have reversed the outcome. Once Kara and Nate were up there, they could have made a number of better choices to get more safely back down rather than just forging on blindly.

Yeah, sadly I'm out of viewing this channel now. It's not that there is adventure and risk, it's that they take totally unnecessary risks for no real pay-off by not informing themselves and preparing properly. A lot of reports on how people die in the outdoors start in a way that looks a lot like how they do things. They might get away with it again and again, but it only takes a couple more things lining up against them before stuff goes bad, because they don't leave themselves much safety margin. The comments at the end of the video really show that they are not even aware that they are worse than the 'flip-flop's hikers'. These only get their ankles cracked and are flown down to the valley in helicopters (many times to the expense of the Swiss taxpayer). It is the sorts of these two, who think they know what they are doing, but in reality are completely clueless, which get themselves into real danger and sometimes are flown down to the valley in bodybags (about 100 foreigners die every year in the Swiss mountains). This has nothing to do with 'getting out of the comfort zone' or 'living life to the full' it is just ignorance and disrespect. With that same mindset in 2006, I quite am comfortable job and hiked the entire length of the Appalachian Trail, and on that trek, I met my wife. Together, we took on the same mindset when we later became ski instructors in Taos, NM, moved to Alaska to work on an organic farm, had kids, moved to India, and now live in Dubai with our 3 beautiful children. At any point along the way, something bad could have happened, but instead of giving in to fear we left our comfort zone and are much better people for it. Keep on creating!

There's enough information online about glacier hiking. In Switzerland, and in Europe in general, there is no policing. People need to be their own judges. And we like it that way. But the rule in general, is that all blue trails (glaciers) should be undertaken with a guide or by people with experience on glaciers. This includes having the right equipment, including roping up when crossing crevassed landscapes. A crevasse, even if it looks small, can be extremely deep. It's instant death. A 1 or 2 day glacier course with a guide in Zermat the day before would have given you the basics for this hike (a relatively easy one if you know what you're doing). Same goes with skiing out of bounds. You can go wherever, with the right knowledge and equipment. I live in Switzerland and have done many hikes like these and am always amazed how many people are up there in tennis shoes. Perhaps the only fault here is that the guy in the shop should have given you better advice. Just the sight of your shoes should have told him "oh no"! There's a cemetery in the middle of the village in Zermatt, where many mountaineers are buried. You should have a walk around it. It's sobbering and a reminder that the mountains are a dangerous playground. Even more so in the years of global warming. Keep up the great work and glad you made it back!

Basically it isn't a hotel but a hut provided to hikers by the swiss alps club. It would have been cheeper to them if they wold've been members of the club. That's why it isnt that popular amongst tourists. The bottle of water is so expencive, because they have to fly it to the hut by a helicopter and that's pretty expensive. Also they used an Alpine hike (marked with blue and white stripes on rocks) in which's description it says that "ropes, pickaxes, crampons and compasses could be needed". So it's in their own responsibility to hike up there.

As 'hikers' you need to avoid the blue-white Alpine trails (take the yellow ones or red-white), like the one to the Monte Rosa Hut. They lead you by definition into challenging and if you are not really experienced very dangerous terrain (which you can mitigate by taking a guide). I had some hope at the end of your video that you have learned something from this suicidally dangerously stunt, but apparently, you have not really. Here the recommendation for the Swiss Alpine Trails (it is easy to find!). To inform yourself carefully before going on a hike in the alps about the route, the dangers and the weather is a no-brainer and explaining your decision by lack of knowledge (i.e. ignorance) speaks for itself. Alpine routes are challenging mountain trails. They sometimes lead across glaciers and scree, through rockfall areas and through rocks with short climbing sections. It can not be assumed that any structural provisions have been undertaken and these would, in any case, be limited to securing particularly exposed sections with a danger of falling. Users of Alpine routes must be surefooted, have a head for heights, be physically very fit and know how to use ropes and pick axe as well as being able to negotiate climbing sections with the aid of their hands. They must have knowledge of dangers in the mountains. In addition to the equipment for mountain trails, an altimeter, compass, rope and pick axe for crossing glaciers are essential. Signalization of Alpine routes is a blue signpost with white-blue-white tip, white-blue-white painted stripes confirm the route. The information panels at the beginning of Alpine routes indicate special requirements. SwitzerlandMobility websites do not include Alpine routes.

Yes it was investigated it beforehand, and even though they were giving some false information oh, they decided it was worth the risk. You take a risk walking out the door of your house every single day, do you want to sit inside and look out a window and spend your life doing nothing have at it.
@ASandreassen5 жыл бұрын
@@scarletfluerr It was not a calculated risk for this simple reason: they are not experienced hikers and they clearly don't know what the risks are. Therefore there is no calculations involved, only 2 people with no real alpine (or glacier) experience doing something stupid, putting themselves and others at risk. The very least you do when hiking mountains (or anywhere in nature) is to be well prepared. I wish they would realise just how big of a mistake this hike was and learn from it. We all do stupid stuff, but admitting it is what makes you grow.

@A Andreassen - they didn’t even have gloves or basic knowledge of the weather and how quickly it changes, I mean they have a million dollar property - could have sprung for a guide going back down once they knew the danger - I didn’t get the sense that they did get it by the end of the video, it was more cheerful and oh well - but glad they are safe

There is risk-taking and approach to life but there is also putting your lives at risk due to inadequate preparation, knowledge, experience and poor decisions. There are so many excellent and helpful comments on this video about alpine and glacier terrain, and they're completely spot on. The analogy with diving, which you're more familiar with, really brought the point home. I've never commented on a video but am genuinely concerned about the naivety shown here about challenging outdoor environments. I really hope you guys read all the advice and learn from it, and that other impressionable followers do the same. I've been able to enrich my understanding and appreciation of the world through your videos and am so grateful for that. So please, please, please be prudent and stay SAFE in future, whilst continuing to enrich all our lives with your wonderful worldly adventures and the fabulous way in which you document them and share them with thousands of people. 😘😘

@@benedikthuerzeler4965 Did they ever explain why they didn't hire a guide for this trek? Maybe there were people who have warned them about getting a guide but they decided to skimp that out because it costs money. Given that they had issues with paying $10 for the bottled water. All I got from this video was a lot of recklessness. Heck, even experienced hikers get lost in the woods all the time so I can only imagine hiking a glacier is even worse. They both keep highlighting about the adrenaline rush and it just makes me question them a whole other way. Definitely not feeling these two glacier hiking videos at all.
@jackie83575 жыл бұрын
@Rabenhexe9 - after watching both parts - They assumed the hike was ok because you could go on it alone, that the hut fit 150 people so it was popular, and they said that the guy who rented them the crampons said the trek across the glacier was 20 min (so it seemed short) and that he took two of his girlfriends, he also showed them a map- but it appears they took a different route and didn’t know it or took a new route different from the one the guy said (accidentally). They were also following the blue alpine path poles - that’s what I got anyway, they didn’t say why they didn’t consider one for the second part - maybe none available or they didn’t want to pay, but they did say they had no choice due to things being so expensive.

We subscribed to your channel back in August, starting at your first video and we just arrived at this one yesterday. Your explanation at the end of the video was so perfectly timed for us. Since we started watching, we have been inspired to start our own vlog around our passion for visiting breweries, and most recently we decided to open our own business franchise. The timeliness of your words and the explanation of your thought process throughout the entirety of your adventure were remarkable. Steph and I have been extremely nervous about taking the step to start a business, however, you perfectly described how taking action with calculated risk, even if we don't know the outcome of the decision is how you got to where you are now. It was so inspiring, calmed our concerns, and provided us with the confidence to push forward! You have been and continue to be such a positive influence, thank you for being honest and genuine! Be safe and be well! Cheers!

Please bear in mind that the "we would rather take a calcualted risk and figure it out" philosophy could have resulted in people having to put themselves at risk to rescue you, fortunately these people "would have a clue". As an experienced mountaineer what you did was inherently dangerous, any risk anywhere is mitigated by proper planning equipment training and experience, in this case you showed non of that, no matter how much of a cheerful review explaining or in this case justifying your actions you do after the fact you did it without considering those risk could have resulted in other people having to put themselves at risk to save you. You can take whatever risks you like but if they are likely to have consequences for others (or in the case of social media people who might be inspired by you) then you have a duty to act responsibly and thoughtfully. This is an absolute shame as your videos are normally great content.

For everyone who is saying these people struggled financially and that this decision was affected by that, i the last quarter alone this couple earnt in excess of a 100000$ for the second quarter in a row they publish their income (which is commendable) on their blog. Please think before sending them money to endorse what was essentially done to make content the below are comments form their blog and it is all verified on their website "For the second quarter in a row, we brought in $100,000 from our KZbin channel and other related income streams! Yes, it still feels just as crazy as it did last quarter. However, it hasn’t always been this way. If this is your first time ever reading one of our income and expense reports, I suggest starting with the first one we ever published in July of 2016 (our total income was $603.26) Now that we’re making what feels like a crazy amount of money from this business, I feel like it’s important to tell you why we started writing these reports in the first place - and why I am continuing to write them (at least until we hit our goal of 100 countries)"

Thanks for the reply mona financially they can afford much of what they do it is ultimately their professions. As i understand it they have to remain out of the USA for a certain period in order to be "tax exiled". Whilst i do think the pair are inspirational in what they do and it is commendable that they do (or did) outline their incomes online they do make a lot of money from the channel. There tipping video of the cleaner shows that when they want to financially make a point however at others they seem to make out they are financially not well off which is unfair on those who support them. It will be interesting to see how their chosen career in travel media is ultimately affected by the pandemic. However i hope they both say well and continue to be able to do what they enjoy
