I feel terrible for the person in the first story because I have autism myself and appear to be perfectly normal physically and can talk normally but I still struggle in social situations and hate confrontations with strangers. It is sad that there are still people who think that autism only shows itself physically and/or with non-verbal communication but there are plenty of people with autism who appear perfectly normal and can talk normally but still struggle with autism. I hope more people are able to learn about autism and that there are different forms of it.

I am the same. People don’t think that I have autism because of the way I act in public, especially because of my job. But when people confront me or yell at me, I get upset very easily and my autism is more noticeable.

Autism is so subtle that I didn’t know I even had it until this year. I just turned 20. And I’ve had to deal with many teachers thinking I was just stupid. I also have ADHD. One teacher never let me have a break. He would have me do all my homework one after the other after the other. But when I tried to take even the smallest amount of time to take a breath. He would tell me to get back to work. He also said some snide remarks about me and some others. But for the others it sounded more playful. For me he was extremely condescending and even indirectly called me stupid. The other way my computer science teacher. And because of Covid we started out the school year doing online learning. And I completely forgot about his class. Because of that I was grounded for a while. (Fair punishment.) but when I’m person learning started. His class turned into a living nightmare. He withheld information from me, he would be condescending. And he would always make me feel stupid and useless. He even near the end of my senior year of high school, he basically said “you aren’t worth it. I’m not helping you anymore. Your on your own” I didn’t really have a good last year. I was always struggling with the slightest thing. I would skip breakfast and lunch in order to get to my classes faster. A fat one point I started thinking I was useless and shouldn’t be trying anymore. I even held a knife to my wrist and was going to do something terrible to myself because of all the stress. i failed his class and was in such a depressive state that I just gave up for a bit. Not even graduating made me feel anything. I was hollow. I still feel hollow. I feel like I’ve been fighting with myself for so long.

@E Boston That's true, but most can. Many of us are pretty much just like everyone else & have been undiagnosed for our whole lives. I'm nearly 40 & just found out I'm autistic in the past year and a half or so. I was just pointing out that the Karen in the story thinks that if you're autistic then that means you're automatically nonverbal, but that's one of the reasons people like me have went undiagnosed for decades. The misconceptions surrounding autism are astounding.

Story #3: Your relationship is basically over, and you just need to leave. For future reference, the correct answer to "why can't you be more like that" is "I'm not [man's name] and you're not [woman's name]." If she wants to start flirting with other people, do the same. Either it's an open relationship or it's exclusive, and that goes for both parties involved. Simply put, if someone doesn't respect you, that's your cue to exit, and anyone who says that you have to "earn" basic respect is garbage. Finally, remember that the one who cares the least wins.

I've been attacked by a swan dad and it is very scary- I saw people giving the swan family (couple and three chicks) bread, and despite the fact I told them it could make them deadly sick, they threw an entire loaf. So I got into the nest area and removed the bread while my neck and back got pecked at by a super angry bird. I went back later and left some birdseed for them. No regrets. Don't feed bread to birds.

Feeding bread to birds (deadly), outside cats (most invasive species after humans), raising honeybees (invasive almost everywhere), releasing spiders outside (some interior spiders will die outside)... people might think they're doing the right thing. The path to hell is paved with good intentions after all. And I get it, people just want to be happy, and thinking of some of these things can be so sad.

I hate people like that Karen in the first story. It was hard enough for me growing up in the 90’s and early 2000’s when autism was still a very unknown thing, and while today is a little better there are still people that insist that autism is a child only thing and must follow the media stereotype. A lot of people still think that once the child turns 18, their autism suddenly goes away. News flash: AUTISM IS A MENTAL DISORDER, meaning IT’S THERE FOR LIFE! That’s why I only donate to organizations that offer assistance to not just children but adults with autism. But good on the op for having official documentation that proves it is indeed a legitimate service dog and good on the guard for doing his job.

Story 1: As an autistic person myself, I am very sure I would have reacted the same way If I were in that situation. I didn’t even know autistic people could even have service dogs (prob more like emotional support) I don’t have a service dog as I have my own ways of dealing with discomfort and it’s not really gotten to the point where I couldn’t calm down in public. (Yes, it has gotten to that point at my house but I just lay down with my cat and gradually calm down and no, she doesn’t have training)

Story #4 I 100% agree on the audio recording. It might be more effective if it’s a video recording showing what room in the house it is, and the time to eliminate any possible deniability. The issue could also have a small compromise of investing in sound proofing to where the game system is set up for the future. But if this addiction continues, I could see therapy or divorce as paths the relationship goes

Story one : as a person that has autism this has happened to me at school walking to the shop I wasn’t even safe at home as some bully’s found out where I lived (it got so bad my family moved) while the school did nothing but claim I was in the wrong in 2012-2016 I went thru FOUR SCHOOLS the stress of this has costed me (spelling grammar issues guess which classes the bully’s had free rain) the difference is I had no dog to comfort me as I was dealing with a lot of anger issues and was scared of hurting one just my mum my Nana and my best friend (my grandad) who where always there for me (I had three siblings but I did drag them into these conversations) I had a “dad” who loved my mum at first but slowly started to drink more and more and more this worsened over time and to save me from the worse of it (that I had no idea that was happing at the time) try mum Nana and grandad payed a school trip I was interested to go on a trip to France this was good for me as I wanted to go out there and they wanted to have me a big taste on what adventures I could go on if i work on my grades work hard at my drop and save up it was hell the bully ring leader I’ll call him bob would stop harassing me the whole time I was there call me slurs that people autism are the r word and that if that I was truly autistic that I needed go off my self and save the gene pool thing s got so bad it turned physical as where right outside my school about to leave for home (about 11pm for those who are wondering) I was assaulted at my left eye and was left there by almost everyone my “friends” who one i actually protected from bob during the trip did nothing and everyone just laughed singing that I was r word and me existing was parasitic to the country the only reason i got home is because the bus driving (old but good man) noticed something and saw me on the floor sobbing helped me to get to my mum who was livid at the school and teachers for letting this happen to the point on when one of the teacher went to her face and started shouting at her and my mum got into a defensive stance which caused her to lose a court case (BARELY) and she was told not to drop me of at the school which was not going to happen as I NEVER wanted go to that town where that school is EVER AGAIN only reason why mum wasn’t fined or given any jail time was because the bus company had cctv in the bus (in and out) I went to a different school ne of the last one and spent most of it having massive trust issues which lasted until college which I meet people who I can call to be my genuine friends and where heartbroken to find out what I’ve been thru my best friend I’ll call him potato (as he loves potatoes as a snack) actually invited me to his birthday after finding out what happened by one of the bully’s that *was* his friend … should I go? It’s only the people he knows in the group (which I also know) and he ain’t the one for causing drama just some Pokémon and warhammer sorry if this is to long

⁠@@LunaP1I was chased by a group of geese when I was little and I was maybe 10ft away and I wasn’t even trying to go after them, was just either playing in the water and didn’t even notice them or I was chasing a pigeon or seagull to say hello. They didn’t stop chasing me until my dad and a bunch of people scared them off. Took maybe less than 5 minutes but it felt like eternity as a kid between 3-6 years old. as someone who is autistic, i am going to assume that women from the first story was just an idiot who doesn't realize this, but just in case, let me point something out. autism is a spectrum disorder, meaning people who have it can range anywhere from barely having it at all, to having it severely. for example, i am less autistic then the person in the first story, since i don't have panic attacks like they did, but i do still have trouble realizing whether or not something is socially acceptable sometimes, and i have trouble making eye contact with people. i also can't really recognize body language that well. the person from the first story saying they can't be autistic because they can talk is the stupidest thing i've ever heard, and it makes me doubt they have an autistic child like they said, because if they did they would probably bother learning about autism enough to know this.

Story 2: I’ve been a 3rd party merchandiser for awhile now (won’t say who I work for don’t ask) and one of the managers I worked with seemed bipolar, sometimes she was great, other times she was a royal bitch, but at the time she was pregnant so I gave her slack and mostly tried to ignore her, fast forward to when she isn’t pregnant and no changed behavior, so then I chalk it up to new baby so she’s still adjusting, then she has another baby and she still is flip flopping between ok to work with and near unbearable attitude problems, but again she’s pregnant with baby number 2 so I chalk it up to that again it wasn’t until after she had baby 2 and still no change that I left, so yeah my advice to that guy would be to look at her behavior before and after she’s pregnant because yes pregnancy can cause pretty irrational irritability, but unless she has a history of being this moody it is most likely just her pregnancy hormones and something to consider if you guys decide to have more kids later

In the US there are no official documents for service animals and security guards are not allowed to ask for any. All they are allowed to ask is if it is a service dog and what tasks it does.

My dad's cousin has a (very mistreated) parrot in a tiny cage. As a small kid, my dad told me to stick my finger in the cage. When I got bit he laughed his ass off. Story#2 There’s not much you can do, pregnancy is hard on a woman’s body. I mean like she’s making a child within herself. When she’s angry and giving you the silent treatment, just let her be. Go do something you want to do. My friends cousin would just cry over nothing. She literally cried because she thought a sandwich tasted good. While my bestie would just feel indifferent than she did before, except being more hungry than before. It was funny because we would be talking about litterly anything and she’d just be like, “I’m craving sushi.”

I'm autistic myself, I only got my diagnosis a year ago and people have constantly tried to tell me that 'i didn't have autism' and 'i was only faking it for attention'. mind you, I was barely fifteen when I got the diagnosis. Back then I was, and still am, in and out of clinics, therapists and doctors offices. Trying to figure out a way for me to live my life normally. I've contemplated getting a service dog many times before. But it's people like story 1's OP encountered, that make me hesitate, because just because I'm verbal, does not mean my autism diagnosis is any less valid, and just because i *Can* talk, doesnt necessarily mean its easy or enjoyable for me. Conversations take a lot of energy for me, and I get easily overwhelmed. So I genuinely feel so sorry for the OP

Regarding story one, in a vast majority of situations.. you can't ask someone to prove that it is a service animal. A simple yes should be satisfactory according to general business practice. And it's not so much that they always give you a service pet, but normally that you get one trained.

I’m disabled and have multiple health issues which makes me handicapped. But I don’t look it. My handicap issues are internal. More times than I wish to remember I’ve been accused of faking. I’ve had insults hurled at me, drive-by shouts, my car was keyed over and over for parking with my handicap placard. I’ve gone home shaking and in tears, too. I understand. My best response is kindness toward strangers because I don’t know what battles someone is fighting.

Last story: When I was younger I thought it would be a good idea to play with the ducks, giving them leaves from the nearby trees and the male duck came up to me and his name was Tank. A couple of things for in the US 1 a vest doesn’t give access and is not proof they’re a service dog 2 there are two questions that can be asked. Are they a service dog? What tasks are they trained to do to mitigate your disability? When the dog went through her legs to stabilize her and trying to get her to sit down those both are tasks. When holding or petting an animal helps someone feel better but the animal doesn’t provide any additional specific tasks that is an emotional support animal and they do NOT have public access rights. 3 There aren’t specific documents or ids that are required by law. Some organizations give their dogs and handlers an id but those are unofficial and usually only has a pic of the team, their names and the logo of the organization. There are many online sites that will “certify” or “register” your dog as a service dog but they are largely scams that target people who want their pets to have public access rights without going through training. Also some people who self train their dogs can get fooled thinking they have to pay fees to have a service dog.

Another story that pisses me off. As someone who is in the process of recovering from agoraphobia, managing stress in public spaces is a significant challenge for me. To help me cope with this, I have my loyal companion Duke, who wears a service dog vest. Despite this, an unknown individual callously decided to snatch Duke away from me, causing me immense distress and anger. The individual asserted that service dogs are exclusively for individuals who are visually impaired and pointed out that I was not blind despite wearing sunglasses like a blind person would. According to him, he and others had observed me evading a vehicle that failed to see me, thus confirming that I was not blind. As I sought to retrieve Duke and maintain my composure, I struggled to assert my rights and communicate with the individual in an attempt to regain possession of my dog. Throughout this confrontation, Duke's distress was evident as he whimpered, clearly sensing my anxiety. In a sudden surge of courage, I attempted to forcefully reclaim Duke's leash from the person. When they pushed me, I stumbled and fell hard on the ground. In that moment, my beloved dog, who means everything to me, reacted instinctively and fiercely. The individual was injured and ended up in the hospital. Now, my dog is facing the possibility of being euthanized at the shelter because of what happened. Meanwhile, I find myself struggling and feeling like I'm moving backwards after all the progress I've made in the past 6 months. It's a heartbreaking and difficult situation for me to navigate, and I am incredibly distressed about the well-being of my loyal companion Duke and the fallout from the incident.
