That's literally what a TAS is. He could have been a well-respected TASer but instead chose to submit his fake runs as real. But TASers aren't nearly as famous as top runners. The reason he cheated was for attention and because he thought he could get away with it if he was careful enough.

@@hottoast16 I won't lie, I would be interested in a separate category for TAS that didn't allow for the exact input mapping or whatever it is called. Honestly, this makes me wonder why more cheaters don't go down this route when they get caught. Coming clean and showing exactly how you did it can be a big help to the community, and because of that, save them a lot of ill-will in the long run. @@Judgement_Kazzy You clearly don’t understand cheaters at all. They cheat without getting caught and they earn a good reputation. Someone catches them and their reputation is jeopardized, they want to keep their fame and reputation so they double down on it. You also seem to be confused and think that someone calling them out with good evidence means it’s all over for them anyways. Lmao, have you never seen other videos on this channel? People still believe cheaters even after getting “caught”. And the fact that they can get away with it by “doubling down” is exactly why they do it. That’s why the only “nail” in the coffin in these cases is that someone comes out and says “yep, I cheated”. Pretty sure some Golden Eye or Doom speedrunners swayed the community for so long until they admit it because even after cheating, they still had some WRs that weren’t disproven yet until after they’ve admitted it.

An actual strong guilt conscience of a good person would lead them to turn themselves in during the 2-3 years of cheating, this was only in damage control mode after being caught and he literally lied again after being caught and confronted before finally admitting what was already known… no praise for that at all, praise the cheaters with an actual good guilty conscience where the guilt starts eating at them and they turn themselves in before any suspicions or confrontations are raised, which is very rare. Apologizing only after the fact(and after trying to double down upon first confrontation) is self-preservation and damage control and being sorry they were caught

A mod that runners could required to use when recording runs is newchunks, which shows what chunks are new and which ones have been previously loaded in by players. It is usually used as a cheat in multiplayer servers for base hunting, but it would've busted the cheater when he spawned in a dolphin to swim to a ruined portal faster.

I honestly think there should be "manipulated" speed run categories where people can submit manipulated runs. These runs are open to scrutiny for 1 month which players are allowed to scrutinise the runs for how they are manipulated. At the end of one month, if players cannot pick how it is manipulated, it is then entered into the leaderboards along with the player revealing how the run has been manipulated. I picture this working similar to TAS runs, allowing players to identify new strategies for cheating and allowing for higher quality control for actual submitted speed runs.

For those of you who don't want to watch MinecrAvenger's video, the reasons he cheated were: 1. It was a fun way for him to explore the game's code and learn more about coding 2. It was too easy to get away with 3. He had a lot of other things going on in his life, so cheating was a way for him to devote less time to speedrunning while still remaining competitve While I appreciate him coming clean, and I appreciate him not just using the old "there was too much pressure on me to do well" excuse for cheating, I personally don't really find any of these reasons to be acceptable excuses.

Can't say I'm surprised because MC has always been a top contender for speedruns that are easy to cheat. It's ridiculously easy to mod, it's so stupidly complex that even marginally changing something can make WR runs exponentially easier (but still take time to get) and the scene is still pretty new and inexperienced compared to others. IMO, the moderation team should take a page out of real world sports and even government agencies: If someone's figured out how to smash the system, hire them and have them show you everything. But so far the game is luckily "obscure" enough to not have that many cheated runs so far.

I said it before: There are way more cheaters who go completely undetected than there are those who get caught. It answers the burning question so many people have: why does it always seem like the cheaters make the most silly mistakes that cause them to get caught? You see, it's because we only catch those who make those silly mistakes. Those that do not make mistakes and are careful will be able to create perfectly spliced videos that are undetectable by any means, they will review their footage dozens of times to make sure it's spotless, and they will not submit runs that are too suspect to invite scrutiny.

In a practical sense cheating at this level is impractical. If cheating requires more time, effort, skill and devotion than just doing the thing properly, most will shy away from it. The most bullet-proof approach to anti-cheating-via-mods is a recording of player input that's fed to a trusted engine (like I take it was done with TrackMania). Then they can be fed to a trusted copy of the game and the movie generated. This requires a completely deterministic game engine with no effect from the machine configuration/speed, and having the proper version to replay the player input to. This doesn't stop cheating with tool-assistance, generating and editing the player input frame by frame for the perfect run, though.

"It may seem counterintuitive, but you'd be surprised at how often it's some of the best players that inevitably try to fake runs. You might think that having the *talent* to achieve the world record would make someone less susceptible to cheating, but it often works against them. Having talent tends to make people feel entitled. They feel like they deserve the world record, and when the game they play doesn't give them the luck they need, they become increasingly frustrated. On top of this, having talent and deep knowledge of a game makes you a better cheater. You know what tools to use and how to hide your edits. You understand what does or doesn't make sense, what is or isn't possible, and what's believable. ... The fact that better players make better cheaters means that arguments such as 'He's such a good player, he has no reason to cheat.' are fundamentally flawed. When [REDACTED] and [REDACTED] were exposed as frauds, this was one of the most common arguments their defenders tried to make. 1, seconds count. 2, it's not just a "little bit" of a time save. Bad RNG can completely fuck over what would have been a world record run, and now because of the bad RNG, you have to try again. You have try over and over waiting for 2 separate things to align, a good world seed, and good RNG. Removing the RNG factor significantly speeds things up. Now you're only looking for a good world seed. What would take months of attempts can now be done in less than a week. It's not hard to see why people may cheat when the alternative is literally wasting months of your life. He cheated precisely because his skills were already good enough, not because he didn't feel skilled enough.

Maybe the speedrun moderators should call upon previous cheaters and/or people who are familiar with modding the game to actively look for new ways of cheating and/or to test new moderators. I'm part of a Civilization III server. Because of my knowledge of the game's editor, the owner asked me to host a game where I was told to cheat as much as possible but without being too obvious to see if they would notice. I was able to fly under the radar for almost the entire run, but an outsider who had been asked to fill in for a player for a couple days noticed that two resources appeared next to each other that normally never would. He raised a question, but a lack of response from myself or the owner quashed any further questioning; that said, he did reach out to the server's most knowledgeable person about it and confirmed it was not possible, and later was vindicated when I finally "confessed" that the game had been tampered with.

It was also part of the test; we intentionally gave vague and nonexistent answers and he didn't press the issue much, and no one else began openly asking questions to the moderation team. I'm surprised that Minecraft records are still accepted if done off-stream. I'd expect WRs to be dismissed if not streamed. The special client seems like a good idea. It'd probably be much easier if MC had a checksum, but I don't know if there's clever ways around that style of detection.

@@polygontower Paradox use what they call Checksums (don't know if they're different than error checksums) to detect modding in their games like Crusader Kings. Mods are allowed (I heavily use mods with a lot of easy to mod games), but for example, achievements are disabled and connecting to a differently modded server is blocked. But cosmetic mods (basically texture packs), don't change the checksum and thus can be used in multiplayer and with achievements. It is only modified if game code is changed.

I think you’re optimistic here. That could be my broken brain from Motorsports… but if one person is doing it, and as we can see he’s not exactly the most buttoned up, it’s statistically responsible to assume someone else not only had the idea, but does it better. Not to mention, he was doing things while ppl looked and missed it. That alone should say enough. Maybe not at the tippy top of the boards, but I’d be surprised if there wasn’t more going on even if less robust

"im not cheating" "ok, that run was cheated, but all my other runs are legit" "you got me, all my runs are cheated" why is this pattern so common among minecraft speedrunning cheaters?

it’s common against any cheaters, it’s like a last resort thing i guess. i mean dream did the “i didn’t cheat” thing for months and millions of people believed it, once you cheat it’s hard to get your reputation back; so i guess they just try to cover it up as much as possible.

The easiest mod would be input recording, from the moment the game is started until it is closed, and since Minecraft is deterministic, you could get perfect replication. If there are deviations, it'll be easy to detect
@polygontower
@polygontower Жыл бұрын
That won't work. Drops which are random can't be checked. For example, if you kill a blaze and it drops a blaze rods and you only recorded the inputs, sometimes the inputs will match and sometimes it won't. In addition, you can't detect manipulations from just recording inputs; if I mine gravel, it will record "left click(5 seconds) (gravel ----> flint)". This doesn't tell us anything about whether the drops have been manipulatted
@see3655

Yeah, nothing about RNG is deterministic. The player movement might be, idk, but that's rarely the topic of cheated runs anyway (never heard of any cases actually)
@abcdefghilihgfedcba
@abcdefghilihgfedcba Жыл бұрын
Are you sure Minecraft is deterministic? Don’t mind the other commenters with no RNG knowledge saying that it’s random because duh it’s RNG… that’s not how it works. But I think Minecraft is complex enough that an input recording of a run might not be deterministic like it is in most games with RNG.
@SioxerNikita
@SioxerNikita Жыл бұрын
@@polygontower It would work, because of how RNG works on computers. So if someone records inputs, and in their playthrough they get a drop, but in verifying it shows no drop, then you know it has been manipulated.
@SioxerNikita
@SioxerNikita Жыл бұрын
@@debesys6306 Random, yes, but it calls an RNG function, which is deterministic, and in the same settings and play, if the exact same inputs are done at the exact same time, will be the same. Just because it is random (which computers can't really do) doesn't mean it is random. It is pseudorandom.

How come they don't just have a mod created that all speedrunners are required to speedrun the game with? It could for example add an in-game UI timer to reduce the chances of splicing by always re-starting when a world is loaded. It could also check the RNG chances and pop something on the screen if they are altered. The only downside is that some cheaters would try to hack the mod, but I'm sure there are ways to prevent that too. It could for example also act like DRM where it connects to the speedrun moderators to prevent hacking.

11:14 Coding this client would involve doing multiple things: 1) Not trusting any of the usual sources of randomness (i.e. the OS) and instead getting it from somewhere else (the network maybe) 2) Either preventing memory readouts or just never generating any random number on the client side 3) Preventing the use of all sorts of cheats, ranging from CheatEngine to injection cheats operating at ring 0 4) Making sure that it isn't possible for the user to make the client connect to a fake server (would require certificate pinning) And since tall of this (except for 4) has thus far never been achieved by any anti cheat solution, I highly doubt that it will work this time.

How about we submit openly cheated runs of games and karl has to find out where and how we cheated. If he can't figure it out then he awards points and accolades to the best cheaters. It would be something along the lines of that Penn & Teller show where people have to try to get away with tricking them with magic. Though I suspect Karl won't get too many entries from us who probably couldn't care to figure out how to cheat a believable run in the first place.
