It’s wild to think v-mon wasn’t raiseable on a vpet until the pen prog, and armadimon/wormmon weren’t raiseable on ANY vpet until the pen Z in 2020. I agree with the other commenter - it would be super interesting to see your picks from the OG pendulum series for 02, and pen prog/maybe even pen x era devices for Tamers. 👀

Idk if there's any direct lore staying this, but I've always believed that the difference between Virus MetalGrey and Vaccine is the Digivolution 'method'. The original lore for the Virus version is a regular Greymon that had literal surgery to give itself cybernetic enhancements, but the procedures had side effects, with the blue skin being evidence of the fact that MetalGreymon is rotting and decaying, presumably resulting in Skullgreymon. The Vaccine variant attains the same cybernetic form but through the Crests and such, skipping the dangerous surgeries and resulting in a MetalGreymon that isn't slowly dying, thus retaining the orange skin.

@@Chimeragui I would say that the Crests can't be ignored, as Vaccine MetalGrey is just as much of an anime invention with its anime debut also seeming to be its overall debut. The Crest of Courage clearly facilitated Greymon's evolution into a perfect (heh) version of MetalGreymon.

About right. Virus Metal Greymon is a result of artificial evolution, where as Vaccine is more of a natural evolution. SkullGreymon wouldn't be the result since it's another perfect level

So funny thing, my best friend LOVES Betamon, it's his favorite rookie Digimon and he always felt kind of locked in to the idea that Betamon goes in to Seadramon thanks to the anime, and of course we would theorize about our partners if we were to get Digimon and he seemed slightly saddened at the idea he'd be locked in to water snake, but then we took a look at the card game and came to the idea of Betamon becoming a Tyrannomon. Small green amphibian with a red fin becomes giant red dinosaur with green spines, keeping the color scheme but also flipping it. Seemed fitting. Not sure what you guys would think of that.

Betamon, while often being tied to more aquatic Digimon, works very well as a dinosaur/ dragon/ monster Digimon rookie! Tuskmon, Airdramon or even something like Stegomon or Coredramon Green are all in my opinion great picks, if you don't want to be tied to the "water snake" line :)

It’s a little fun to see how in the early days they weren’t totally aimless but it certainly feels a lot more like “here’s our monster design, throw them together to ship the toy” than as much curated and trying to really emphasize lines like newer stuff (I say newer but really as far back as V-Tamer to an extent and imo really taking off with Tamers)

It was especially interesting to see you implement this kind of a principle into your digivolution line concepts! I was especially fond of the choice to give Joe a Betamon, and implement their digivolution into the form of one of the opponents they fought in the Adventure anime. Kari and Mimi's lines I thought were also handled pretty well. This kind of a system also allows for a look into Digimon history, in working with a more limited set of Digimon, and using more classic-era Digimon in these lines. The games really make you realize just how random Digimon evos can be. I always found that weird as a kid considering the anime evos were so streamlined. But even in the lore evolution can be random based on several factors, I completely get why the anime streamlined it though.

Definitely! Digimon goes between very curated, streamlined evos and then incredibly random evolution and I think both are super duper fun. Makes things more interesting that it's multifaceted!

As someone who was getting into Digimon near the end of the English dub of Adventure, I would love to see the 02 gang get their own redo with a team that has Digimon released before the anime's debut of August 2000. This could be a fun switch up as I'm fairly certain Veemon, Hawkmon, Armadillomon and Wormmon are all 02 originals. Perhaps you could even get custom art commissioned for original armor Digimon for their replacements or pick out pre-existing mons that could work.

I think it would also be so cool to see the kids’ Digimon come up from in-training mode together. Joe and Tai both getting koromon but them becoming very different. Izzy and TK both getting tokomon. Sora and Mimi both getting tanemon. I think Matt and Kari would both get tsnunomon then, with Kari getting Elecmon. It’s still a mammal like gatomon, and it’s a nurturing Digimon (works in digi-egg village)

Amazing video Karn! Another way to think about of Tai’s VPet evo line would be that it starts as a Vaccine type Digimon, then slowly loses the purity and becomes neutral (data type) and seeing Tai trying to push Agumon to get stronger to digivolve we see it corrupt into a virus type that being Skull Greymon. Then as you stated, Tai sort of acknowledges that darkness or corruption and incorporates it into the “True Evolution” for his partner digimon

Okay Karn, Challenge Accepted. First 5 V-Pets ONLY Digivolution Lines for the English Dub Cast of Digimon Adventure. I choose English dub because that's where my familiarity lies, and there are some minor character differences. Tai: Agumon -> Tyrannomon -> Metal Greymon (Virus) Your agreement makes a lot of sense, and I think ultimately this is what the line would have been had they not wanted Agumon's line to keep similar color consistency. Matt: Betamon -> Airdramon -> Megadramon Pairing Matt with a Betamon means or eventual Omnimon creators will have the pair of rookies from the Digimon 1 is too good an opportunity to pass up. From there, going Airdramon allows to us to keep Seadramon as our antagonist in that original Evolution episode. Then, Megadramon maintains that rebellious quality Weregarurumon exhibits swapping out the Jorts for Tatoos and cannons for arms. Sora: Gabumon -> Frigimon-> Monzaemon Sora's crest is all about Love, so let's make sure she gets the most "Love" affiliated digimon from the Original V-Pets which is Monzaemon. From there, we can go backwards to Frigimon (A physical Ice Combatant to fight against Meramon in that original Evolution Episode). We keep the Crest Motif, and keep Gabumon in the mix as a partner being his thick fur is to prevent the cold. Also fun fact, her Crest metls the ice heart of Frigimon revealing the adorable fluffy nature of Monzaemon. Mimi: Gazimon -> Cyclonemon -> Etemon Give Mimi the unlikeable Gazimon and the two could hit if off with their initial "Above it all Nature". When needed, it can evolve to the BIG and Powerful Cyclonemon. BUT, when face with being sincere and true to themselves, the Cyclonemon turns into the powerful performer, Etemon. Since he is a combatant in the original Anime, it could be to either A.) Reflect on themselves and why they are similar to Etemon. B.) Swap Etemon out for maybe Datamon or Giromon. Additionally, fun reference to the Lillymon debut episode where Mimi has to SING to the ShogunGekomon. Joe: Gizamon -> Coelamon -> Whamon (if their an ultimate) Since Whamon isn't an ultimate in the original V-pets the alternative is the following: Gizamon - Drimogemon -> Giromon. Gizamon makes sense, so we can keep the acquatic elements. From there, it depends. We either continue the water theme in Coelamon or (Just like how Drimogemon was found in a cave at the bottom of the ocean, Gizamon also turns into a Drimogemon before condensing into the Vaccine defender of the Digital World, Giromon which is a Vaccine which works with the Computer Network to remove problems. Izzy: Patamon -> Centaurmon -> Andromon Izzy gets the big metal Android he had to run from in earlier episodes, and we went backwards from there. T.K: Elecmon -> Angemon -> MetalMamemon Kairi: Biyomon -> Unimon -> Pixiemon T.K and Kairy I'm going to describe together. For T.K. keeping Angemon to me is paramount. It's a cool moment. However, what could be more fun/interesting is if the "Patamon can't digivolve" is instead "Tokomon" Can't digiviolve. Then, when in the Primary Village with Elecmon, Tokomon is inspired and Digivolves into Elecmon. Then, soon after, when faced with Devimon, Elecmon feels the strength to Digivolve again and become Angemon. With Kairi, we are giving her Bioymon as a rookie, so we can keep the flying motif for Unimon. Unimon is a Mythological Digimon, with could foreshadow ties to Angemon, as they are both winged creatures. It's also a solid middle step between the mythical Unicorn to the mythical Pixie. This lets us keep the 2 Angels delivering Arrows of Light as Angemon and Piximon both are Angelic in nature.

I feel like Toei and Bandai kinda toy with ideas like this sometimes, like having Devimon evolutions in the first Agumon DIM (after having the big DoneDevimon fight in the anime focus so much on Agumon). It would be wild if we ever got something that went all in on that like this video.

DUDE yanno what would be a cool video? Use the unused V-Pet rookies (excluding 4 of course, but you get to use both of them from 5), plot their evos, and then reverse engineer a digidestined based on those lines. Like an alternate v-pet universe or something. Edit: There are so many tyrannomon variants in the v-pet holy shit Betamon-->Devimon-->Monzaemon(I like the idea of this child being afraid of their digimon at its champion form, but it's still their digimon. Once they come to accept their digimon, they are rewarded with the cute but more powerful Monzaemon) Elecmon-->Angemon-->Vademon(Angels are intelligent, flying beings of myth that have a lot of influence over human lives while operating in the shadows. Aliens are intelligent beings from sci-fi who live in the sky and have a lot of influence over human lives while operating in the shadows. I imagine this as the 'smart kid' of the group. Kind of a hacker(as displayed Elecmon's electric abilities) and a good strategist) Kunemon-->Drimogemon-->Giromon(Moles and bugs are both creeping, burrowing things. Bugs also look kind of robotic, and drimogemon is clearly roboticized a little. Whereas Giromon is all metal, but shares that theme of machines and rotation with it's saw/Drimogemon's drill. Could be something about this child coming out of their shell and to the surface.) Gizamon-->DarkTyrannomon-->MetalTyrannomon(This series gogglekid? Maybe they have a plot of dealing with their inner darkness or something. It could also take a diversion to the deformed Cyclomon before accepting their own darkness and becoming DarkTyrannomon) Gazimon-->Flymon-->Nanomon(I see them as like the youngest in the group, and maybe even their Gazimon is unusually small. At first they try to emulate the Gizamon kid and end up with ExTyrannomon, a mere shadow of the other kid. It's not until they accept and like themselves for their petite stature that they are able to evolve into the more powerful Nanomon.)

Saying Angemon was in the same vpet as Patamon is driving me crazy, Unimon and Centarumon were the evolutions that Patamon evolved into specifically on the Version 3, meanwhile Angemon was actually on the Version 2 that Gabumon and Elecmon were on to be a direct counterpart to Devimon who was on the Version 1

I always felt like Unimon was meant to be Patamon's de facto evolution in the vpets so I would have went with that. Even their attacks are similar. It goes from Air Shot to Holy Shot. You can still use Holy Angemon Priest mode for Unimon too. Also maybe thats why they made Pegasmon for Patamon later?

I approached it slightly differently-- Perfect/Ultimate is the top stage, but to make up for that I gave dual Adult/Champion and Perfect/Ultimate, zero use of original partners or lines, and only Digimon from 1997/1998. Fairly happy with how it came out, though I have some complaints: Tai - Elecmon / Tyranomon / DarkTyranomon / MetalTyranomon / ExTyranomon Matt - Gizamon / Tuskmon / Ogremon / Digitamamon / Minotaurmon Sora - Betamon / Seadramon / Airdramon / MegaSeadramon / Megadramon Mimi - Tyumon / Numemon / Sukamon / Monzaemon / Etemon Izzy - Kunemon / Flymon / Kuwagamon / Picollomon / Okuwamon Joe - Syakomon / Shellmon / Gesomon / Anomalocarimon / MarineDevimon TK - Gottsumon / Monochromon / Starmon / Triceramon / Mamemon + MetalMamemon Kairi - Gazimon / Devidramon / Evilmon / LadyDevimon / Dagomon Basically without thinking I wound up with Etemon / LadyDevimon / Shellmon / Seadramon / Kuwagamon in the lines, so I would need to have a think about who the villains of this now-totally rewritten series are (Probably pulling from the five or six megas available from the time period for the big-bad). TK gets a double ultimate mainly because I can never choose between the two but also as something to differentiate him as being special, likewise Kairi gets a light in the darkness motif. I was initially going to have Matt/TK have Mamemon and MetalMamemon, but I couldn't get it to fit. Mimi with Tyumon should be fairly obvious. That's all I've got. Honestly, flipping hours spent on the brainstorming for this comment, I can see why this video took Karn so long to get out!

If we’re not thinking about too much about Megas, an alternate one for Sora could be Biyomon -> Kokatorimon -> Hououmon. Kokatorimon debuted with Biyomon in Ver. 4, and Biyomon’s profile mentions wanting to become Birdramon and not the flightless Kokatorimon. As for Hououmon, it actually debuted earlier than Garudamon did and was originally a Perfect level in Digimon World. Having Sora’s partner evolve into a form it doesn’t like could be a source of drama until it later gets “reborn” as a flying phoenix. Magnadramon debuted as a Perfect as well in Ver. S, so I could see Gazimon -> Tailmon -> Magnadramon as a more focused “dark beast to holy beast” line.

I think an interesting possibility would be for Tai's Tyrannomon to Dark Digivolve to MetalTyrannomon instead of SkullGreymon, and maybe he doesn't realize it is a Dark Digivolution at first and instead refuses to try to digivolve past Tyrannomon (because MetalTyrannomon goes berserk just like SkullGreymon). Then, when he finally musters the courage to digivolve again, he gets Virus MetalGreymon. Tying both the courage to overcome his fears of his partner going berserk and hurting someone, to the virus typing of MetalTyrannomon, and getting a more in control but still virus type ultimate. That way the metal part of his ultimates stays the same, and maybe whenever he starts seeing the metal form on Tyrannomon he refuses to go through with the digivolution. That way there's a bigger payout for when he finally digivolves, and it becomes a journey for him to trust himself and his partner again. I think SkullGreymon did the same thing to Tai in the anime, making him fear trying to digivolve to ultimate again, so they serve the same purpose there, I guess. But MetalTyrannomon would feel a lot more personal because he would have no reason to think Tyrannomon wouldn't become another Tyrannomon species? While Greymon becomes a Greymon either way, which lessens the impact a little bit to me. Especially with how different SkullGreymon's and MetalGreymon's silhouettes are.

I had the old digital pet. The only other person who had one either really sucked at it or knew something I didn't, because I raised a Greymon/Tyrannomon (whichever it was) and he had a Numemon. I won our battle pretty easily.

If you wanted to do the branching evolution thing from the VPets into the anime, you could have them all have normal digivolutions, and then sometimes they can digivole into other digimon, and have Tyrannomon be Agumon's normal Champion form, while sometimes turning into other dinosaur Digimon. A really cool idea would be that, when they are battling Myotismon/Vamdemon's forces in the real world, Agumon digivoles into a new form, Greymon, and that's what triggers the children's memories of seeing Greymon battle Parrotmon from the Digimon Adventures pilot OVA. I feel like that would work better than Tai seeing Greymon a hundred times and never once piecing together that it was literally another Greymon who he saw up close that night.

The official art of Digimon Card Game initially featured Agumon holding a card at the camera with a bunch of Digimon behind him. For a Tamers Set they made an art of all those Digimon in their evolved forms and Agumon became a Tyrannomon holding a Digimon card to the camera. Not related to the card effects. I remember you couldn't think of a design of a dark Digivolutions of Chessmon in "What If We Gave Digimon Data Squad DARK Digivolutions?", but I think I thought of one that might work. Have them turn into queen of hearts and king of hearts from Alice in wonderland. While they are base on cards instead of chess, it is still hierarchy where king and queen are the most important pieces in the game. Also cards game like poker and blackjack tend to viewed generally as gambling, not a positive light compared to chess. The dark evolution of Queenchessmon could be RedQueenmon, a tyrannical ruler that use a axe to remove the head of it victim called Executioner Slash. Giving irrational decisions that only benefit her and ignore the ideas and thoughts of other digimon. Kingchessmon dark evolution is RedKingmon being a pushover that agrees to anything that Queen want to make her happy. His attack could be Beserker Ramage, attacking with all his might, ignoring any damage he may be inflicted until he accomplish his goal.

I **love** Gazimon to Gatomon here. It's awesome her becoming smaller and cuter when getting stronger, instead of her Rookie form somehow being smaller and more cutesy than her edgy Champion resting level. I've always liked Gazimon a lot visually actually, and was a little disappointed that such cute doggies were all so mean in the anime. I wanted one as my partner.

Last video I commented about this but I feel it's even more appropriate here.... Why not give Mimi for example the blue palmon (Aluramon? Something with A) from Digimon World. I mean it would be a great Ugly Duckling story. Imagine her feeling inadequate because Palmon being bright and pink while she's a dull blue, concluding with either a pretty ultimate/mega or just a lesson about not judging by appearence. Pixiemon? Can work for both since it's adorable. On the same vein, Tsukaimon for TK, with ab arc about being afraid of evolution since he becomes Devimon more often than not, but has the potential to become Angemon. (Although Tsukaimon hasn't been as forgotten as the other Digimon World encounters.) I don't want to throw any more options because I'm not all that certain about which digimon are pre-2000.
