I know you guys get sick of "BUT WHAT ABOUT THIS GAME?!" comments, but you are aware that CTR: Crash Team Racing on the PlayStation is widely considered to be one of, if not THE best kart racers ever made, right? Your segment on Crash Nitro Kart made it seem like you'd never even heard of it. It's a shame you chose such a mediocre sequel to represent the series instead of the legend that preceded it.
@GameSack
@GameSack 9 жыл бұрын
mrhoeivo We've already talked about that one. I liked Nitro. I like how it was 720p. It was far more mediocre on the non-Xbox consoled. I don;t think it's a shame at all. If we only ever talked about the most well-known games, our show would suck.
@mrhoeivo
@mrhoeivo 9 жыл бұрын
Game Sack Then you should have at least given it one of the old "We already talked about this game on an earlier episode, but we'd be remiss if we didn't mention CTR" segments like you did with Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing. Also, this video spends 5 entire minutes talking about Mario Kart, so I don't think you can argue against talking about well-known games. If your response to this is something to the effect of "Well, we obviously couldn't skip over Mario Kart in an episode about kart racers", then I don't think you appreciate the influence CTR had.

Sonic & SEGA All-Stars Racing is my favorite game in this genre. Sumo Digital did a great job with it. The drift mechanic in this game is more manageable for me than in the Mario Kart games and the amount of unlockable SEGA-related goodies is crazy. In fact, the unlockable scheme reminds me a bit of what Sumo did with SEGA Superstars Tennis, which was pretty enjoyable in its own right. I agree with Joe that the sequel, Transformed, falls just short of its predecessor... though the OutRun and Afterburner tracks are really cool. Since Joe mentioned Pac-Man World Rally, I really should make time to give it a try. I bought it cheap (disc-only) a while ago for the PS2 and haven't tried it yet. Dweezil Zappa, huh? That's interesting. I have to say that the music heard in the gameplay clips definitely sounded good to me. I know that Motor Toon Grand Prix was mentioned in the comments already, and that's one that I would've mentioned myself as a kart racer not seen in this episode. Boy, Polyphony Digital sure got big after that relatively unknown title. Some game called Gran Turismo or something... Another awesome episode, guys. Thanks for putting it together!

Peter Skerritt The first game did had the better character roster for sure, (through Joe Musashi, Gillius Thunderhead, NiGHTS, Vyse, and AGES made Transformed's roster fantastic just for those characters alone), but the tracks were very repetitive as in their themes and what game their based on, half of them were Sonic themed and from Heroes which sucked, transformed did it much MUCH better with the track selection. Not just but the music is far superior with music remixed while the first game lazily just ripped music from the games (and some in bad quality as well.

Might be the nostalgia speaking, but DKR is the best kart racer ever, period. It simply spanks MK64 in every department, and that really says something considering MK64 is itself a great game! Only shame Rare pushed the N64 so hard they had to axe music and AI to make more than two players work at all, and that we'll probably never see a sequel. Then again, with Playtonic rising from the ashes of Rare like an epic Phoenix, I guess I should never say never...

I'll be completely honest- I like both Mickey's Speedway USA and Chocobo Racing. I think they're underrated gems with solid gameplay, although picking the right characters will make the games much easier, I've noticed- character balancing isn't particularly good in either of those games. They've also both got great soundtracks, MS:USA in particular. Lots of great ear worms in that, especially Colorado, the hardest track in the game. Also, it's good to know that someone else shares the love for Super Circuit! There needs to be more GBA representation in Mario Kart 8, in my opinion.

I got a kart racing series that I'd like to see you cover: the Snowboard Kids games. Strictly speaking, they're not *technically* kart racers, since you play as kids snowboarding (obviously), but make no mistake, it functions exactly like a kart racer. There's three in the series. The first two are on N64, and the last on DS. The first game got a Japan-only expanded port with more characters, CD quality audio and animated cutscenes. My favorite is the second one, since it had its control improved so that it's less stiff, and the enemy A.I. is a lot less cheap. Seriously, the final boss race in the first game took me years to finally beat because of how insanely advantaged the unique boss racer is programmed. Both N64 games have a variety of fun, colorful tracks, and have very enjoyable music, though I would say that the first has overall better music, the final boss song of 2 is my favorite BGM in the series. Honestly, Snowboard Kids 2 is one of my favorite games of all time. You'll notice I didn't mention the DS game, SBK Snowboard Kids. That's because it made a lot of changes that didn't work in one way or another. Some were interesting ideas that just didn't pan out, like items that upgrade as you do tricks, and others that just make me facepalm. It at least has great character control (don't use a 3DS analog stick, it'll make you spin out), but doing tricks is too slow. You have to tap the touchscreen in several places to make the racer do a trick, but by the time you've finished tapping, you'll probably crash halfway into the trick. The draw distance on obstacles is *horrendous*, and the faster you go, the closer to you they first appear. They changed most of the returning characters' personalities to overall more unpleasant ones. The unique and strange tracks are gone, and now the tracks are at real life cities. Each character is only allowed to fire one unique character-specific projectile, and the balance for them is way off. There is only one boss fight repeated three times, each time the same, but slightly harder. And the music sucks, I can only think of one track that's just decent. And since the DS game didn't sell well, it looks like the series is dead in the water.

Lego Racers 1 was one of my favorites growing up, and I usually get the urge to play it once a year. I dunno how the PS1, or N64 versions hold up since Ive only played it on the PC. It was awesome that you could build your own racer and build your own kart. Ive heard that using more parts to build your kart actually affects the way the kart handles. - You earn more parts, and different car bases by winning circuit races. The levels and parts have good variety since they are all from different Lego sets, from Pirates, Medieval, Space, exc. The power ups are kinda cool. You pick up certain colored blocks for certain kinds of powerups. Reds are forward attacks, Blues are shields, Yellows are traps, and Greens are boosts. You can also pick up up to 3 white blocks which makes the power ups even better. Normally using a green block is like a single Mushroom in Mario Kart, but getting 3 white blocks and a green block teleports you a fair ways forward. Getting hit by an attack causes you to loose 1 white block if you have one. The only things I dislike is that every circuit has 1 boss character who is clearly better, and usually sticks to a certain kind of power up (shields, attacking, boosts). Every other racer has the same AI, and aren't that good even on their own track. Also Boosts are by far the best powerup. There is a reason only the final boss "Rocket Racer" goes specifically after the green power ups.

Street Racer warrants a mention as one of the first (if not THE first) attempts to rip off Mario Kart wholesale, although the characters are actually vaguely inspired by Street Fighter II hence the name. Is there is to be a Kart Racers part II, also consider mentioning: Sonic Drift (just because) Firebugs (PS1, may be tricky though as it was a European release only - strangely a spiritual sequel to the Rollcage games!) Looney Tunes Space Race (really fun even if the rubber-banding is brutal) Wacky Races (only the DC/PS2 and maybe the GB Color versions though, the rest are awful) Bomberman Fantasy Race (you talked about Bomberman Kart, you may as well mention this) Formula Karts (an actual karting sim, the Saturn version is arguably the definitive one - it's called the Special Edition after all!) F1 Race Stars (I know they're not actually karts but it's more the feel) Atari Karts (would be a laugh at least) BC Racers (I know you've mentioned it before but that's never stopped you)

Mickey's Speedway USA was always one of my favorite N64 games. It's very in-depth and just difficult enough to keep you interested and not give up. Great controls, simple and adequate weapons, unlock-able characters, fast-paced battle mode. Just an all around great game, not even compared to other kart racers. My Wii is softmodded but it is extremely convoluted. I often forget even how to work it since I don't power it on very much and it's not self-explanatory at all. Tons of different apps many of which do the same thing. Getting games on there seems to be a chore. I dunno man. Unless you're gonna sit there and regularly play with your Wii it just doesn't seem worth it. I kind of avoid my Wii since it is softmodded and just use the Wii U since it is less convoluted. Even the original Xbox hacks are much less convoluted.

Mod Nation on PS3 was a really great game, but had one fatal flaw... The super cheap AI. You could be running a perfect race, be in first place, way ahead... and then right at the last part of the last lap, get hit from an AI attack and watch everyone pass you to lose the race. But the racing itself, the challenges, the creation and customization system were so good!

Some others that come to mind are Zero Gear, Speed Punks, and the original Crash Team Racing. I loved playing Speed Punks and very few people I've met seem to know about it. If you were wondering about the influence of Diddy Kong Racing on the Crash racing games, the development team on CTR tried out DKR maps to get the mechanics down.

I really enjoyed the Mario Kart series and can't wait for Mario Kart 8 Deluxe to come to the Switch at the end of this month. And I think you're wrong about Pac-Man World Rally. It came out on PlayStation 2, GameCube, PC, and PlayStation Portable. There was going to be an Xbox version but it was cancelled for unknown reason.

There's more to Chocobo Racing than what was said in this video. For starters, there are a bunch of unlockable characters (including Squall and Bahamut), and a custom character creator.

I'd have to say that Super Mario Kart on SNES is probably my favorite too, it's classic and just a ton of fun. Speed Punks on the PS1 is a great kart racer that kind of flew under the radar, also can't forget about Rockman Battle & Chase, it's a really fun Mega Man kart racer that lets you take parts from defeated racers' karts and incorporate them into your own, really fun game imo.

Modnation racers is my favorite by far. Deep customization where you can make your own characters, tracks and karts aswell as download other people's. It's also fast and the power up system is more skill based than in Mario kart, it's about risk vs the reward.

Good to see Pac Man World Rally getting some love, it really is a good game. My theory is, after Namco made the arcade version of Mario Kart, they took the code and just slapped a Pac Man Skin on it with a few extras. Battle modes are also pretty interesting, though racing is more fun to me.

There are so many kart racers out there that I imagine you'll have to do a part 2 eventually. I'm impressed that you got in as many as you did though, and you even included a handful of titles that I wasn't even aware of! Nice job! The only ones I know of that aren't in this video you've already covered in other videos, except for Jak X.

I always thought Chocobo Racing was an underrated game and used to play it with my cousin for hours on end. I don't think it was mentioned in the short segment but their were unlockable characters like the air blimp (SS Invincible) that went insanely fast, you could also race as Cloud, Squall, Bahamut, a Cactuar and a handful of others once you unlocked them. Some of the characters floated giving them an advantage against ice (this games version of the Mario Kart banana) as they would float right over it unaffected. After beating the Story mode you could build your own racer by creating a unique color scheme for existing racers and you would get X amount of points to put into their stats depending on how well you raced.

A kart racer called "cel damage overdrive" was really interesting. All the weapons, physics and controls are like nothing else i've ever played. I also really like "muppets race mania" its a lot slower than other kart racers. But good music, good design and a hell of a lot of muppets to play as.

Mega Man: Battle & Chase is an interesting kart racer on the PS1 since it mixes the weapon getting mechanic of Mega Man with racing. It was never released in North America, but you can play it from the Mega Man X Collection for the PS2 and Gamecube.

SuperKarts on MS-DOS (developed by Manic Media) was pretty fun, you could earn money on the track to buy parts to build up your stats for the next race. Some hidden areas on the track you would discover by bumping into walls that would be full of cash.

You guys missed one. The best one. With the most memorable characters ever. Atari Karts for the 64 bit Jaguar. It not only came out a year before Mario Kart 64 but had the advantage of a numeric key pad! Do the math guys. ALSO Sonic drift, but... ehhh. Joe I could not agree more. All star racing is a great game. Also its a little known fact back in the late 90s Philly was just a ship yard that mickey and friends carted on. Crazy times here in Philly. It was great meeting you guys at too many games. Keep up the good work
