The PS2 is pretty much the king of compilations. 3 Midway collections, multiple SNK fighting game collections (the Samurai Shodown one is AWESOME), Intellivision Lives, Atari Anniversary Collection, Activision Anthology, the Mega Man collection, etc. I've made it a point to track them ALL down, too. Also, we've got the Rare Replay coming. JOY!
@Ponimaju9 жыл бұрын
***** I love tracking down as many compilations as I can and I have the most for PS2 by far (though I have a lot of them on Xbox instead of PS2, or copies for both systems). The main one I'm missing right now that did actually come out in NA is the Capcom Vol 2 one (and I suppose Mega Man X Collection, though it's expensive as fuck). I've seen the Samurai Shodown one around for Wii but it has been too expensive for my taste.

Ponimaju I had to order my PS2 Sam Sho Anthology off of Amazon, I could NOT find it in the wild. It was brand new, though, still sealed, so that was cool. Same with Metal Slug Anthology for the PS2, and that one did cost a pretty penny, even used. Still looking for the Data East collection for the Wii. Another one hard to find in the wild.

This is one of my favorite episodes so far, selfishly because I think so highly of compilations. I own many of the ones talked about here, with the Taito Legends and Capcom Classics Collection discs being some of my favorites. The Namco Museum discs for the original PlayStation really set the tone for future compilations, with game-specific exhibit halls (filled with artwork, documentation, and even looks at the PCBs) and pretty impressive stat-keeping to go along with decent emulation. Sadly, Namco Museum games lost the "Museum" features upon moving to later platforms. The Arcade's Greatest Hits series of compilation discs for the PlayStation were also pretty good, with extras like developer interviews added to the package. The Midway Collection 2 disc has Moon Patrol on it, which hasn't been seen on consoles since. When this series evolved into Midway Arcade Treasures for Gen6 consoles, we got even more great coin-ops that we hadn't yet seen on previous compilations. There have been other decent compilations as well, including the Activision Anthology for the PS2, Konami Arcade Classics for the PlayStation, and the SEGA Genesis Collection for the PS2. Hopefully, down the road, you might revisit this topic again. Thanks for putting this together!

[Coury] I used to buy a lot more compilations than I do now. One thing that irked me is that a lot of them used to put an ugly anti aliasing softening filter over the whole thing. Mega Man Anniversary Collection did this. Thankfully, they fixed those issues with the Mega Man X collection - several of the games on that collection actually run in 240p, which is great. That sort of thing is usually only saved for the M2 collections (like the Fantasy Zone one seen in this ep).

You guys should really make an episode on the GBA, the GBA has a big bunch of hidden gems that deserve more attention than they get, and I'd love to see Joe talking about the GBA's amazing hardware! Like for example the cartridges being able to hold up to 256 MEGA POWER!
@mikkolovesgaming17239 жыл бұрын
Ruko Michiharu This. I've always felt the GBA was kinda underrated, I just never seemed to notice a lot of buzz surrounding it, and going back to look at it's library of games for ones I could play for my channel, I've noticed a lot of pretty interesting ones that I'd never even heard of before.
@felman879 жыл бұрын
Ruko Michiharu Before that, they should really do an episode on the Sega SG 1000 and SG 1000 II (probably combine the two) along with a Genesis episode. Then they can be done with Sega and move onto doing episodes based on the Nintendo consoles (they've already got the N64 and Gamecube done).

***** It's kinda selfish to think like that don't you think? >w> Just keeping the good games for yourself... But I totally see where you're coming from... @Michirin98019 жыл бұрын
MikkoLovesGaming Yeah, the GBA is indeed pretty underrated... I mean, the GBA is the handheld that came the closest to bringing the arcade experience on-the-go! It was like a portable SNES only MUCH more powerful! And almost nobody talks about it, and when they do, they're usually either talking about the mainstream games that everybody already played, or the licensed kids games >-> (you know, exactly the kind of game you should avoid on GBA)

Game Sack Dave Absolutely. I seldom go into GameStop partly because they don't sell retro and also because their prices are usually so much higher than elsewhere, but that was a real memorable exception. Speaking of Taito Legends 1, what's your favorite game on the collection? For me, I'd say Zoo Keeper. It reminds me of a 2600 game but way faster. It's also got amazing replay value. Of course Bubble Bobble New Zealand Story and Space Invaders Part 2 are great as well. Even the sub game, Battle Shark is a lot of fun.

Excellent episode. I suggest you try Capcom Generations for Saturn and PlayStation. They're not made by Digital Eclipse. Capcom themselves made the several ports. I think they are six discs on total. They released them only in Japan. However, the second compilation of Capcom Classics for PSP are actually some of those discs stitched together by Capcom. They're beautiful. The second disc is an enhanced port of the three makaimura games. The SNES game was reprogrammed and they've thrown the slowdowns away; ghosts 'n goblins is finally playable and ghouls 'n ghosts is sharp and crisp. All discs have extras like dip switches and remixed soundtracks. Highly recommended.

My biggest beef with the Metal Slug Anthology for the Wii is that it is not progressive scan. On a CRT it looks fine, but on an LCD TV it looks sooo blurry. If they had made it 480P (which Wii game programmers told me was very easy to do), it would have looked SO crisp :(

Game Sack I love the idea of compilations, but this is illustrative of the reasons I also loathe them: you think you're finally getting the complete collection, with all the best versions, but then there are some (small or big) issues that ruin it for a large part. For example: I bought Command & Conquer: The First Decade right when it came out in 2006. By then everybody had Windows, nobody was using DOS anymore. Yet they did NOT include Command & Conquer Gold, the SVGA Windows version of the game. You had to make do with the lower res DOS version. Really? Really?!?!

Mega Man Classic Collection on PS2 is great! Mega Man Classic Collection on Gamecube is awful. On that version, they made the B button jump and the A button shoot. Muscle memory makes it unplayable.
@nintyfan19919 жыл бұрын
Meow Oh come on! It doesn't take that freaking long to get used to. You know, if it was really unplayable on the GC, critics would be panning it across the board. They didn't. They all noted that, although the button swapping sucks, they never said the whole thing was bad.
@weeseet9 жыл бұрын
I've been playing Mega Man my whole life, so the controls are pretty firmly engrained in my brain. And honestly I don't WANT to get used to the reversed controls, because it'll interphere with playing the originals. When I die in-game, I want to think "Ugh, I messed up," not "Ugh, I forgot which controller I was holding for a second." Also, why were you so hurt by what I said? Did you develop that compilation or something?
@nintyfan19919 жыл бұрын
Meow Look, I just think that version gets a FAR more flak than it should when in reality, there are FAR worse (I mean, even TVTropes notes that the GC version of MMAC isn't terrible... despite putting it on the Porting Disaster page for whatever reason) ports/emulations, like Sonic Adventure on PC or Genesis on GBA. Besides, swapping controls doesn't entirely affect games quality as long as it's still playable, does it? EDIT: An Amazon review brought an interesting point once you consider that the rapid fire (or rather, burst fire) button is the Y button, which is just above the A button.
@Nukemann649 жыл бұрын
Meow I absolutely 100% agree with you! The reversing of the buttons in the Gamecube version made it ALMOST unplayable. I can remember thinking to myself, "What in the world were they thinking?!" Like I get it, the A button on the GC controller is enormous as compared to the B button, but WHO THOUGHT that it was a good idea to swap the buttons?! I was never able to play it that way. I used the B button to jump, and i think my index finger on the X button to fire. :/

I'm still mad that Nintendo never brought the Kirby collection on the Wii to the UK.

Vince Pavey I modded my Wii specifically to get around these typical Nintendo-fuckups. I'm probably gonna have to do the same thing to my Wii U in the future because for some reason Nintendo thought it was smart to make a console region-locked in the 2010s.

Another great episode! I like the Data East Arcade Classics compilation for the Wii. Lots of variety in the games. A little hard to find, but well worth it!

I remember I bought Sonic's Mega Collection a while ago and it single-handedly made me appreciate Sega. I was never a Sega guy ever, grew up a Nintendo kid had played a Genesis only a handful of times at friends places or relatives places. Saw this game for thirty bucks one time near Christmas and picked it up with gift money and was not disappointed. Made me realize I missed out back in the day. I especially liked the Phantasy Star games since I'm an RPG fan.

Like Dave, my favorite compilations are the Taito Legends discs. I probably spent more time playing those than I did with actual PS2 games. I have to say I really like the Capcom Classics Collections as well. It would have been nice to see Three Wonders get a mention, as that's one of my favorite games in the collection that often seems to be overlooked.

I like these all, but one of my favorites (although I don't know if this counts as a "video game" compilation) is The Pinball Arcade, which came out on a variety of consoles, PC's and mobile devices. Every month they release a full 3D polygon recreation of an old pinball machine digitally for you to download, with some real classics like Twilight Zone, Medieval Madness, The Addams Family, Attack From Mars, Taxi, No Good Gofers, and many more!

Turning into a zombie in Metal Slug 3 is the best part in the game. I like it because you think that you just lost a life by getting killed by a zombie in the level but nope you're still going but as a zombie.

I really enjoy Capcom Collection Volume 2 just for all the sidescrolling beat em ups. Thanks guys for making more videos recently.

the Kirby museum lollipop factoid...it makes sense when you consider what item Kirby usually eats in the series to give himself invincibility

You guys do a fantastic job. Keep it going . I haven't seen a decent video gaming show since GamesMaster which was shown on channel 4 in the UK back in the 90s. Of course back then it was the saga vs Nintendo war. The show was fantastic. What I love about you guys is that your always bringing the nostalgia back !

My favorite collection is the MGS HD Collection. Was so extremely hyped when it first got announced and i still love it every bit as much. Own it on 360 and PS Vita. Also last week i picked up a used copy of God of War Collection Volume 1 and Devil May Cry HD Collection. Both good collections for some of the very best PS2 games.

Great video - I love well done compilation releases. Konami released a collection of their arcade games on the DS of all systems that's pretty decent. It puts the original arcade instruction artwork on the bottom screen as you play which is neat.

I know Atari games go back maybe a decade before my time as I'm an 80's child but I had the Atari Anniversary Edition Redux (Playstation 1). Playing it along with watching the video interviews with founder Nolan Bushnell, reading the ecxcerpts on Atari and browsing the photo gallery gave me a sense of respect and appreciation for the beginnings of video arcade machines. The collection has Asteroids, Asteroids Deluxe, Battlezone, Black Widow, Centipede, Gravitar, Missile Cammand, Pong, Space Duel,Super Breakout,Tempest and Warlords. I don't know if this is something that someone would play in this modern age but I thought this might be worth a mention to you guys, Joe and Dave. I was happy to see some Collection titles on PS2 like Capcom and Metal Slug. Speaking of Capcom I know there was Capcom Generations for PS1 but they came in 4 discs in one fairly big CD case. You can find out more about them on Wikipedia if you both have the time. Thanks for this episode Game Sack! P.S E3 got me stoked!

Really great episode and with all the compilations available you can easily get another two or three episodes out of this topic. For an idea on a future episode how about looking at games that have never gotten a re-release due to copyright issues (that are not licensed like movie games and such) and cover what is keeping the game from getting a second release or remake? (such as the publisher going out of business or the IP having multiple owners who can't agree on a re-release)
