Berkeley is dysfunctional and has been for a very long time. Here, again, time during the council meeting was largely spent on concerns outside the purview of the City. I recently inquired about a couple of bus shelters being installed because a postcard announcement was mailed out last spring and our rainy season was approaching. Turns out there's a process to be undergone, including putting the job out for bid, which means we probably get to wait another year. Two bus shelters! Don't we have any sitting around in the corporation yard? Obviously no one on the payroll is the least bit concerned about how a rainstorm would affect the waiting bus riders, who regularly include elderly and disabled people.

Kate says "climate change is an existential threat" and that we need "alternatives to the internal combustion engine." But then she complains that Berkeley isn't doing enough to SLOW DOWN new housing (with design standards, community input, street articulations, solar installations (when utility-scale solar is far more efficient), developer fees, and "process"). Kate prefers paperwork to climate. If you make housing too expensive to build, no one will build it. I hope a more sensible, pro-climate candidate steps into this vacated seat.

She was merely bringing up the point that big high rise buildings are casting shadows on other existing systems that have lower elevation. Thats called Beggar Thy Neighbor YIMBYism. If Sun is an asset, big developers do not have a corner on that market

@@cocoablini Do you (and Kate) want urban infill or not Moving housing from being illegal to being mere economically and procedurally infeasible gives the same result: deep undersupply of dense urban housing while the climate burns.

Lots of hysteria there. Berkeley has lots of new housing-a lot of it is lease-ready right now. Its just not "affordable" and affordable housing system is a scam. They build for Chinese industrialist brats and Google newb employees. So, new housing, to attract the commuter class I would say no thanks. The small bungalow enighborhoods are very nice and human scale. There is no constitutional right to live in Berkeley and there is no requirement for the City to take in a million people. The housing rules right now are being used to gentrify, increase tax revenue and kick Blacks out of the city. Its a huge failure@@user-bs5io9rn8i

The Scanner is not WOKE or DEI so it's fine by me. Unlike Berkeleyside, which is as reduced-standards DEI as you can get. Can't pass the SAT? No worries, come to work at Berkeleyside.
