Captain Janeway has the most recorded first contacts, has traveled the furthest under a ship's own power and had a major impact on the development of the Federation.
But how did a driven, but repeatedly chastised ensign end up in making such sweeping changes? The daughter of an Admiral, she was never pushed to excel but instead chose to do so out of curiosity and the desire to do right.

I was quite surprised when I found out that she lost both her father and fiancé ( I might be wrong about this part, she could have saved one but couldn’t). Why on earth did this not come up during the series? It could have been amazing to explore that side of the story in the series. Missed opportunity imo.

Honestly, never could get enough of Voyager. Of Janeway as a person, she was the most relatable Captain I found myself wanting to follow after if I had the chance to. I know it's not a popular opinion, or even a liked one. But she did what needed to be done time and time again, the choices weren't the best, and we can sit back and criticize what happened, but more often than not, I agreed with her. Thanks Rick for always uploading these, found your channel a good two years now? And I can't get enough of your content, live long my friend, and may the stars always guide you toward your next project!

What I love about Janeway most, and why she will always be my favourite captain, is that she was incredibly empathic and always acted from a moral or empathic ground. That didn't make her a great tactician, made her go mad once in a while, but it also made her very wholesome and an embodiment of what starfleet stands for. More so than Picard, who also was a great banner carrier of morality, but missed that empathic touch.

I agree....of the four Captains (Janeway, Picard, Sisko and Kirk) Janeway is my favorite. She had the hardest task of the four.....her ship was lost in the Delta Quadrant and they thought it would take a lifetime to get home....if they got home at all.....but she promised to get her crew home. She stumbled a few times along the way, she struggled with doubts.....she fought many enemies....but she never really gave up hope. I respect her....as a woman, as a Captain, as a warrior, I respect her. Like Mulgrew said....Star Trek was a man's club. They had never had a female Captain and they didn't know if it could be done and she came in and showed them exactly why having a woman in the Captain's chair was a good idea.. Her crew became her family. And like others in her crew (particularly Seven and the Doctor) she had to evolve beyond who she was when they first started the journey. She became more than just a Captain....she was a mother figure to many members of her crew (Seven....B'Ellana.....Kes, etc) She became a counselor. An ambassador to new species. A teacher to younger members of her crew (and Seven) I'm proud of her.

Janeway was always my favorite captain. Makes me sad she's so heavily critisized when she's been thrown into easily the most danger of the Star Fleet crews followed on a show. They were completely and utterly alone and had no choice but to band together. I didn't agree with her all the time but I don't believe she was meant to be written like the, like Picard and Kirk where they are usually portrayed as being in the right. Janeway is often protrayed as being in the grey area. She's doing her best to stick ti her moral copass and Star Fleet and Federation guidelines but that's difficult to do when it it would take them 75+ years to get close to Federation space. She was met time and time again with one outlandish crisis after the next with no choice but the face them head on

I do agree Janeway was the best Captain for her situation and I did enjoy Voyager more then DS9 (personally hated the series). I also liked Archer more than her due to the fact of he was the first Captain of a vessel that came into contact with Klingons and Romulans, also having the guts to blow up a Borg ship from the inside. Then again, thats my opinion.

Katherine Janeway is an exceptional scientist and probably one of the brightest minds in the Federation. As a command officer, however, she began as well-below average and it is only due to her father that she was given command of a starship. Don't get me wrong, she is an exceptionally capable and driven woman who would undoubted have ended up as the captain of a science vessel and, ultimately, as the Director of the Daystrom Institute. Her experiences in the Delta quadrant allowed her to grow as a command officer, eventually becoming an above-average captain... but not by much. It is only due to the quality of her crew that they survived to get home (and that includes two temporal mulligans--one by Harry and Chakotay, and the other by Janeway herself). I really like Star Trek Voyager, and I like the fact that Captain Janeway was not nearly such a polished leader as Kirk or Picard. It made the show a lot more interesting as we watched ALL of the characters grow and develop. The only thing I would have changed in Voyager is that Kes would have never existed. I absolutely DETEST the character of Kes (and for that matter, Jennifer Lien is a friggin fruitcake IRL). Kes contrasted sharply with Neelix' character and he really doesn't start to develop until she leaves in season 4. P.S. I like the "Redacted" entry on the Omega Directive... that was a nice touch!

One thing I love about Janeway, is that she makes the effort of knowing everyone on her ship. Picard may have known the officers, but he kept himself distant from even them.... With Janeway, she knows even the random crewmen that could easily have been lost in the shuffle, and knows them well enough to talk about what's going on in their lives (aside from... you know, "Still stuck in the Delta quadrant ma'am.") Granted, she's on a ship with less than 200, not over 1000, and circumstances did kindof force the crew into being more of an extended family unit, but she still made the effort.

To be fair; an _Average_ Federation Captain has pretty damn good qualities, each with their own individual species or personality traits that they use to adapt to each situation. *All* the Federation Captains are good captains, but her challenge was definitely one of the greatest, though. A more brazen or individual Captain would have died, imo, she was level headed and reserved and that's what saved her, in the end. Didn't pick sides (apart from with the Borg which was alliance or _become_ Borg or die and that's no choice at all) didn't trade tech as much as she possibly could, protected her crew first.

I strongly recommend reading/listening to her autobiography, published 2020 and narrated by Kate Mulgrew in audiobook form. It is absolutely fantastic and I believe it is basically considered canon by the show's producers (judging from the copyright written on the cover). A few things the book states that differ to this video: - Tighe is never mentioned in the book, and the only person she remotely wanted to settle down with was Mark, who proposes to her on several occasions without their relationship despite her declining. She finally accepted over video call just before Voyager left. She mentions that she had flings throughout her various postings before Voyager, but she maintains that there was never any intentions of these going further. Early on, she did have a semi-serious relationship with a guy but she dumped him as he wanted to put his career ahead of hers and for her to essentially give everything up while he sought out a command role. - Janeway was nowhere near her father when he died. In fact, almost everything he did was classified. He was working on a new type of ship at the shipyards designed for combat with the Cardassians. The ship could traverse different environments, from space to a planet's atmosphere to under water. They successfully trialled it several times on an icey planet, and he asked to see it for himself. That time, it failed and he died. Janeway was informed by Captain Paris and had no idea it had happened before then and was completely shocked to learn where he was at the time. She was granted leave and essentially became depressed for a short period of time. - She didn't give up tennis for 19 years. She did lose a match as a teen, however, and took it extremely badly, but went on to win the following year. - She's not the Borg advisor, Seven is. - She didn't discover coffee at the academy, her paternal grandfather introduced it to her when she was intensely studying at his house for her Starfleet entry exams. Obviously this book was written after you made this video and you relied on the sources you had at the time.

I like to imagine Janeway sent back to the early 21st century, where she's trapped as an inmate in a women's prison. To survive, she pulls on skills learned from Neelix to gain control of the commissary, while her knowledge of hostile alien cultures helps her navigate the dangerous prison social structure. Janeway's own motherly qualities even help some of the other inmates. You could make a whole series about Janeway in prison - seven seasons worth!

Sir; Captain Janeway remains to me to be an extraordinary person in a unique situation. I can only imagine what it was like in a similar situation on HMS Botany Bay. Collecting data, samples, information for the first time. Not knowing whether its important or useless. Every decision one makes effects oneself and the people under your command. Life and death are the reality you deal with on a daily basis. There are days you would prefer to be alone in dark room where no one can see or hear you. A nice profile Rick on my favorite Captain, Katherine Janeway. I would say the 2 part episode "Year of Hell" as well as "Scientific Method" are good examples of this Captain's range...

She’s maybe my second favorite Captain. Behind only perhaps Picard. The unique circumstances of the Voyager however give her an amazing opportunity to examine what Star Fleet stands for and why. I found her breathtaking and vulnerable and strong and complex. Amazing character. And one of the best “strong female characters” in the history of science fiction.

I love the Janeway character, or how it is supposed to be. But unfortunately, it was Voyager that had Janeway, and not one of the previous series. Not that I would like to replace Picard or Sisko, but Voyager is just... well, it's Voyager. Plot holes everywhere, characters that don't make sense etc. because the writing staff was literally fighting internally for the whole series. Now one has to pick where Janeway is depicted properly and where she is just acting silly because of writer's laziness. That's really frustrating, so this personnel file is really helpful in drawing a coherent picture of her character. Good job!

I liked Voyager and Enterprise ,Best. Janeway is Leader councilor Friend teacher evan Parent, all alone but determined to get the job Done. Excellant Captain, just DON'T get her pissed. Like Equinox, a favorite episode of many. Omagh also. She adopted 7 and patiently taught her. She's a good lady. Like to see her return. Enterprise went out wide eyed and I Loved that show too They did very well but had to grow up fast. As Archer said " we were Explorers and started running into So Many Bad Guys. Tucker said " Now the stakes are higher. Archer said " Weight of The World Trip ".., The show Just got Better and Better ". Wish it continues. Well Happy Holidays Everyone out There and Take Care. Learn and try to be Happy.

Without being stranded in the Delta quadrant. I don't think Janeway would have become Admiral, twice. We had a marvelous discussion of this at a science fiction convention. Some people arguing from a US Navy perspective. and some people arguing from what they believed Starfleet to be about.

Thanks for the video, a good summary of Janeway's life and what makes her tick. I always thought she was the most underrated of the Star Trek captains and certainly is a gutsy survivor has found strength from principals and her crew. The fact she is flawed and plays loose with the Prime Directive when push comes to shove makes her an interesting character. Mulgrew clearly rose to the challenge of doing this the role, she was always interesting to watch even doing mundane things like drink coffee.

Voyager. My gateway drug into Star Trek, the first Captain I ever saw in the big chair, and so also the first one where I saw the entire show back to back during it's original run. Certainly one to forge new paths, and she managed very well indeed, given the lack of a support network Voyager was faced with.

My favorite captain, it’s not a very popular opinion but it is what it is, she was a tough, principled if not occasionally too principled, compassionate captain who when taken into account what happened to her ship and crew handled things admirably. I also founder quite relatable

Captain Janeway is by far the most formidable and capable Captain in Star Trek. She is my favorite Captain! Did she break protocol? Yes, but you have to remember the predicament they were in. And I am sure if they had never left the Alpha Quadrant, things would have went way different.

I know Janeway gets a lot of crap for how she handled herself but I think she handled the situation much like anyone would have. She was in an unknown area of space and she had also lost key members of her crew. She wasn't about to lose anyone else even if it meant violating rules.

Also, Janeway was a scientist and proud of it, not relying on 'just cause' for the answer. But this could also work against her sometimes shutting out possibilities because they didn't fit her definition of what is and what is not.

I'm not much of a trekee, but I've recently been watching through the voyager series', and I gotta say, she's a little all over the place when it comes to the needs of the many outweighing the needs of the few, or just brashly putting her crew in serious danger just to shave a little bit of time off their trip home. There have been multiple cases where she's risked her crew for the sake of one or two individuals, and though this is a common trope in media, where she differs is in risking her crew for simple organisms that likely wouldn't appreciate it anyway.

you know what I want to know? If the Equinox had been in the Delta quadrant prior to Voyager pulled in by the caretakers array and taking basically the same route home with obviously some differences especially in the areas of jumping hundreds or thousands of light years, why is it that none of the species they met along the way had heard of Starfleet or the Federation? I know that the Equinox did away with Federation values pretty much but with taking the same route they had to have encountered at least a few of the same species so it doesn't make sense that no one had ever heard of them.
