I have spent most of my life fly fishing the great Pacific Northwest to include fly fishing in Alaska, fly fishing in Washington, fly fishing in Oregon, fly fishing in Idaho and fly fishing in Montana. Too funny. I have a lot of stuff. Just the other day my son was looking for bag to take fishing on the grand ronde. He walks back in from the garage, looks at mom and says “dad has a dry bag!?” Wife, “ your father has everything,” insert eye roll” Me, “ you can never have everything”. Love video!

I tried to fish out of my kayak a couple of times but it's a 17' touring boat, not a cool sit-on-top. I found that it was impossible to manage a paddle and a fly rod at the same time and it was really susceptible to the wind. Impossible to stand up in. A friend of mine has a sit-on-top that he propels with his feet, it pedals like a bike, and it steers with a small lever, leaving both hands free for rod and net chores. But, it's heavy and cumbersome to move around. I'll stick to my tube, but I would like to try a pontoon boat. Thanks for the video. Awesome fish and an amusing hook up on the first one. Cheers

Have to agree with you. Too much crap to get your line wrapped around and no control while you’re fishing. Pontoon is definitely better than a tube in some cases. A little higher out of the water and oars to move you along. No real loss of fin control.

@@flyguy2021 One big advantage that I can see to a pontoon boat over a tube is that less of your body is in the water so you wouldn't be so susceptible to the cold. Another might be the ability to drop an anchor if you wanted to do some still fishing, like with a chironomid just off the bottom. But, they're harder to pack around....

Great comments Brian - thank you. It will definitely take me some time to get used to the new boat, but I am excited to discover more ways to use it while fly fishing. It was surprisingly stable when standing...never felt like it was going to tip...but I am still not super confident when playing a fish standing...I am sure it will come with time and familiarity (the command center makes all the difference for stability and something to lean on). It's also pretty easy for me to move around, surprisingly light weight. I am most definitely going to keep the float tube...however, I'm looking forward to getting to know the kayak a bit better and finding new places/ways to fish.

I now have all three watercrafts - they seem to all come with some of their own advantages (and disadvantages). The pontoon boat is stable, hold you up high and can carry a lot of stuff (down side is it's tough to haul around...either disassemble it or put it in a trailer if you don't have a truck), float tube is light and fast...but you sit low in the water and can get cold in the winter months and not much room for dry storage...kayak keeps you dry, your stuff dry, up high, lots of room for gear...but can be tricky to fly fish and steer (still working that out for sure). Great comments Frank - I appreciate your insights! I am going to try a two anchor system next time I'm out with the kayak to keep from pinwheeling. I think what I am most excited about is finding news ways to fish with the kayak...like Bass or perhaps even sea-run Cutthroat trout!

Do you use an intermediate line on lakes when your not fishing dries?

I typically will still use a floating line with longer leader to get down a bit farther. Sink lines only when I need to really get deep.
