As the heathen are wont to say, ‘Real knows real, playa.’ There are great swaths of performers from all manner of genre that point to Prine as an influence. I’d be more shocked if a country artist, a real one not an autotune king/queen, didn’t know who Prine is.

Kacey's brilliant song is so representative of Prine's wit, turn of phrase, and captivating melody. How excellent it is to see and hear a new generation of songwriters who have been influenced by this giant among songwriters. R.I.P. John.

As you get older you realize why you gravitate back to country and folk music: It's about the stories. Kacey Musgraves sings a great story. John Prine's sung a life time of them. Hats off to you both.

John’s influence was so much bigger than people realize. The man has influenced musicians for generations… I mean, Bob Dylan called him the greatest songwriter ever. Kasey’s admiration and love for him is so apparent here. And, John is so humble. He knew talent when he heard it. I’ll miss him forever.

I think a lot of us would have been happy to burn one with John Prine. I know I would, even during the time when I hadn't smoked for 20 some years. John Prine was one of the important musicians of my youth. Back in college, my friends and I would get together, smoke a few, and sometimes listen to his music, sometimes play it as part of an afternoon or evening playing music. "Illegal Smile", "Sam Stone", and "Your flag decal won't get you into Heaven any more," were particular favorites, along with Harry Chapin, John Bassett, and a few others- we used to spend hours playing those songs. What's kinda funny, is looking back, we were also looking into the future, because each of those songs remains relevant today. I lost my brother to the opioid epidemic a few years ago, an illegal smile helps make my retirement pretty mellow, and watching people run around with their flag decals and MAGA hats reminds me of the back of the dirty book store. I'm sorry you're gone John. I'd have loved to burn one with you, but I thank you for all the memories you helped me make. But your songs carry on. I'll be listening to one of my college friends playing a tribute to your music next Saturday, and hoping you know how much we enjoyed your work, wherever you are.

I was watching Dolly on the Porter Waggoner Show with my Grandpa (so i'm kinda older). LOved country music ever since. So how is it that I didnt know John Prine until last year? Now my wife always requests "other side of town". His face changes, his voice changes, but what the h doesnt. hoping to see him in Indy in 2018.

She is showin' why and how she is a performer, writin' and singin' her songs and playin' the guitar in that dropped tuning like she has done it all her life. Hoo-rah.

I first saw this video a couple of months ago. I cried then, from the sheer momentousness of it. It's even more poignant now. I love Kacey, and of course, I love John Price.

Kacey is everybody’s cool ass cousin the way that John is everybody’s favorite uncle. Just listening to Prine makes one feel a sense of comfort and protection. Kacey captures the same unique feeling with this song. Anyone who loves folk and country songs and writes songs is constantly trying to live up to the Prine standard and failing.

It makes me sad that he had to die before I discovered his music, but this video made me laugh and cry and it was just what I needed right now. The way John gets kind of bashful when the first "to burn one with John Prine" hits is just a great human moment. Its obvious that these two have a special relationship and just observing it makes me happy.

Here's a story for you. My late brother in law spent two years with John Prime in the Army back in the sixties. They shared a bunk bed in Germany for two years. Anyway fast-forward thirty some years later John Prime is doing a concert at Fairmont WV and my brother in law went to see him perform. Denny, my brother in law, tried to get back stage to see him. He told security that they lived together for two years in Germany and were like brothers at one time! Security, yeah right! They never let him in to see John, what a shame. I am sure that would of been one hell of a reunion.
