Over the last fifty years (I’m 70), I must have spent thousands and thousands of pounds on plants , both for garden and house. Plants are my passion, my garden is my happy place, my idea of heaven is to live in somewhere like Kew Gardens! I have had many comments from family and friends over the amount of money I have spent, my answer always has been ‘ some women spend money on shoes, clothes, hair and nails, me, I spend it on my plants’ . I’m retired now and on a much depleted budget, but tomorrow I’m off to buy some succulents ( love always finds a way) 🥰🥰👩🏻‍🌾🌺💐Happy gardening x

I work in the ecotourism industry as a tour leader/guide. I have learned over the last 10+ years that the people who give you the most trouble, who want to extract the most out of you, who make you work the hardest, will NEVER be happy no matter what you do or offer. At a certain point, I had enough of a client base that those people who are troublemakers just go on a personal blacklist. They just take up space on your calendar and create stress -- and take away time from people who are good repeat customers who deserve your 100%.

I have a small business, and many of my friends own small businesses. It’s shocking how salty people get over others who achieve any sort of success. There’s a misconception that opening a business makes you “rich”. They don’t understand how much one has to hustle just to break even. Small privately owned businesses are passion projects that you bust ass to make happen. Not everyone is a business owner because often times it takes years of sacrifice. So many will judge anytime you spend money, go on vacation, raise prices, etc etc etc. Nothing is ever good enough. These clients are the same hypocrites who turn around and post “support small business!” on social media. Good job staying strong and keeping your head on straight. All that matters is YOUR happiness. I wish people weren’t so hateful, but the next best thing is ignoring it. Best wishes!

Well this video was necessary. I'm not gonna lie it crossed my mind that you might say you favor certain plants to manipulate the market but since I watch lots of your videos I've noticed you trash talk plants you sell and remember you saying the the obliqua is going down in value so common sense seas you do not intentionally try to manipulate the market. I think you hit the nail on the head when you said price shaming is done by jealous people. I also think price shaming is done by people who are simply angry they can't afford the prices. They also shame people like me who pay the prices. It's really toxic. That's why I don't publicly tell people how much I pay for my plants. They try and make you feel stupid and ashamed for what they call over paying. Nothing worse then non plant people finding out how much you paid and sarcastically saying " You paid that for a leaf ?"... Edit: I can so relate to having extra money for plants or self care because I don't go out and party or eat out much. I'm a homebody who rather be home chilling with my plants lol. A lot of times I think saying, “they’re just jealous,” is a really gross way to not examine our own actions. But in cases like this I completely agree. Plants are a luxury & the entitlement some people feel that somehow they’re owed these hard to find plants is disgusting. I feel jealous of some people’s plants. But those feelings are mine to own & deal with. Projecting that disappointment out as an attack, instead of dealing with our feelings is truly pathetic

Feel your pain here. I have had a private collection of rarer aroids for 3-4 years - so just before the 'boom'. After this past year, I'm so done selling cuttings that have outgrown my collection via fb or having a plant Instagram because of how entitled and difficult people are to deal with. I am getting to the point I would rather throw cuttings of a mid-high 3 digit plant in the bin rather than deal with the abuse and generally nasty behaviour from too many people in the plant community. Whether it be price shaming, feeling entitled to cuttings, abuse over a courier taking too long etc etc. The amount of people who have raised PayPal disputes against me to get a refund after receiving the plant because it had slight cosmetic damage or something stupid is mind-blowing. Hoping if I take a step back it might settle in a year or two when people find a new hobby...

I completely agree! I recently had a customer claiming she's an expert in growing and rooting plants🚩 Sold her 3 bulbs that are healthy viable and actively sprouting node and roots. Arrived in great condition! 2 weeks later, she contacted me saying she's not sure how she should plant it but she did it anyway and she's wondering why the sprout hasn't come up yet from her medium. 🤷‍♀️ 5 weeks later, she claimed a charge back and the reason? "Not as described" I was like wtf🤯 Lesson learned, if they say they k ow what they are doing then it's a 🚩😁👍

Sad to hear you have so many bad customers. We need good sellers! The overwhelming vast majority of sellers, whether shops or private sellers, that I've dealt with have sold me great plants and the two times I had plants die due to sudden cold snaps, both times I got refunds or credits without even asking. Twice I bought cuttings from private sellers that were, let's just say, less than thrilling -- the one sent tiny leaves that let me know they're overfarming their mother plant and the other nearly strangled the stalks the node ends were so tightly wrapped in plastic wrap. Neither purchase was for very much, so I chalk those up to "lesson learned." But you might have the right idea: to wait until the FAD is over and you get people who legit want quality stuff but understand how shipping works.

@Fabulous Fancy Plants omg, I've had the same thing happen almost exactly!! I sold some dormant roots, that were absolutely fine, to someone on eBay & bc they had no idea what dormant roots were (which is why they should've never ordered them in the first place!) they claimed they received a bunch of dead sh$t & requested a refund!! I had one person plant what they received and bc, in less than a week they hadn't seen anything come up, they assumed they were dead as well. I guess I'm just a different breed of person. I get that eBay gives ppl 30 days to theoretically request a refund (which I also think is bs, but that's another convo), but when it comes to something like roots or bulbs, unless it's apparent upon arrival that there's something SERIOUSLY wrong with them, I would never return to the seller weeks later to request a refund bc a plant didn't grow after I planted it. I mean, there could be a million reasons why something doesn't sprout....& to me, that wouldn't have shit to do w/ the person who sold them to me....does that make sense? It would be the equivalent of buying a packet of seeds and planting them & then digging them back up a month later and returning them to the store bc they didn't grow!! 20 yrs ago, eBay was not the crazy place it is now. I resell toys & shoes mostly...I haven't delved into the world of actual live cuttings & from the horror stories, don't think I'm gonna! And even in those two genres, I deal with some of the same issues. If something is used, ppl assume it's MY used item...for instance, if it smells like smoke then I must be a smoker, which I'm not, but I buy from yard sales, goodwill, estate sales, etc. & sometimes even after cleaning things, they still smell. I'm like well then go buy the damn thing brand new, for much more money if you wanna be that picky!!! I'd rather lose the buyer than deal with picky ass people who want a nearly new item or even a brand new item, get it and then bitch and moan bc one little tiny thing is wrong...I actually had someone open a case on me bc a piece of cardboard was missing separating a the top of a glass item from the bottom...eBay sided with her...she sent my item back (got her money back, I lost my shipping cost both ways!) & once receiving it, she had opened a sealed item AND the piece of cardboard was inside all along, it was literally underneath the top she never picked up!!! HA! No joke!😂😂😂😂 eBay almost isn't worth dealing with bc they almost always side with the buyer, but whaddya gonna do!

@@skully6223 right!? And when you asked for pictures or proof, they change topic!🤷‍♀️🤯😂 All selling platforms and payment processing services covers sellers for only lost and items not delivered/received and unauthorized purchase. When a buyer claims "Not as described" then as a seller, we are not covered. It feels to me like some people forget that rare house plants are a luxury item. No one /needs/ a variegated gloriosum to survive. The people that are willing to spend the monetary equivalent of a car on a luxury item either buy it as an investment for their business or they just have enough money that spending this price on "frivolous" luxury items doesn't hurt their wallet...which means that if it weren't huse plants they would probably trade in some other luxury item like cars, boats, horses, art, fashion, jewellery, electronics or travelling. They could donate it of course,and some businesses do put money aside for charity, but if it's a business investment they'd be stupid to take too much money outside of their business ...plus donations and the free market still mean that grown people are free to decide where/ how they want to spent their "extra money". I am all for more equal opportunities and (financial, educational) resources for people in all countries but even very expensive plants are not making that much of a dent compared to other markets.

Also on the price shaming thing... I have one word: entitlement. These are entitled people. No other way to describe them. I dont know dudeeee. Like aroids were so much cheaper literally a year and a half ago so it’s hard to swallow sometimes, especially for folks who have been in the hobby for a long time. I have a hard time seeing people complaining about prices as “shaming.” Obviously it’s not acceptable to personally attack sellers. That being said, people being upset that the price of plants have skyrocketed and it went from a cheap hobby to a crazy expensive one is like. Normal. Like woodworkers who experienced the price of wood skyrocketing. Also it’s clear that (NOT FROM YOU AT ALL) there is artificial manipulation of the market by holding back plants, like the photos of tables and tables of strawberry shakes from Thai growers. That’s hard to swallow. In no way does any of that justify personal attacks against you or other sellers but I think sometimes complaining about prices at all can be seen as shaming and that’s not fair.
@Ben-ky9yq
@Ben-ky9yq 3 жыл бұрын
People showing pictures of what appears to be plenty of stock, attempting to create a narrative that these plants are being held, to create drama, increase a fb following and incite others into shaming is half of the problem. Are there what appears to be lots of plants? Yes, but that qty doesn't even scratch the surface of the demand for them. A supplier selling them all at once wouldn't make a difference to prices and additionally longer term would decrease the supply, increasing the price, since the majority of the plants shown are mother stock plants. Read between the lines and see how you are being manipulated into believing that there is more plants available than required, which is just not true.

I offered a guy to sell my begonia Julau tooted cutting and because he knew I was unsure he asked “how much did you pay for it?” Does it matter? Is that fair? We came up with a number much much lower than I see others selling for and he still asked for a discount! Like….?

I've never understood price shaming or people thinking someone controls the market, it's literally just called supply and demand and its a very basic economic principal... If someone wants to buy a plant at a huge price, that's 100% their right to do so and the seller is 100% okay to sell the plant to them at that price if that's what the buyer is willing to pay!

Price shaming is insane. I completely understand that a price of a plant can vary for many reasons, and the simple concept of supply and demand should be understood before anyone has opinions on prices. You can literally name any other item for sale and if it's hard to "make", or takes time to "make" or the supply isn't meeting the demand, or a combination of all of that makes the prices the way they are. In the US, wood has tremendously gone up in price because so many people are building homes and there isn't enough supply, so people will spend more money on it to get ahold of it. At the end of the day, it's still just wood. The negativity on social media is INSANE and people need to learn to not jump down other peoples' throats right away! It's sickening and contributing to so much negative mental health. I'm so glad you are so transparent and these things need to be said more often! :)

So I got in an argument with someone on Facebook about this very issue. Basically someone posted an albo monstera that was selling for $150 and was asking if the price was a good price. And this jerk just commented saying how she was a dumbass because the plant wasn’t worth that and how real plant people will learn to be patient. Like I think the plant community needs to establish there are different types of buyers and sellers. Do I think there are some sellers that are trying to artificially control the plant market? Yes (ie. The obliqua issue). But I don’t get this mentality of plants need to be available at a certain price all the time. Like your growing plant it takes time. It is the balance of fair compensation of time and effort I think. I don’t know maybe I am missing the mark here, but I feel like price shaming is stupid.

Kaylee dropping the hard facts! 👏🏽 Businesses paying TONS of money for specimens to keep and make more plants off of, ISN'T anyone's business. Hell, even a private plant collector with the wallet to pay these prices shouldn't be shamed! You don't shame people for buying pretty cars now do ya? I'd LOVE a McLaren, I ain't even gonna be able to buy one, but I sure as hell ain't even gonna shame anyone for having one wtf? So why would you attack someone for buying a plant YOU can't afford??? It screams insecurity and shallowness. Edit: I have found a rather nice and decently big(swedish, as i am a swede) fb group for plant trading,selling, and buying. There is zero tolerance for price shaming and it is upheld by the mods and fellow members, AND I LOVE IT!!!

My maranta plants are fairly picky, if you keep them in water without soil they lose their color or vibrance. They hate tap water, it makes their leaves go crispy, so I have to use filtered or bottled water. My larger bushy green maranta loses it's color and vibrance if I don't trim it back every now and then. I'd introduce a little bit of soil and worm castings into the leca/pon then transfer into a pot of soil. Make sure the humidity stays above 60 but no higher than 80. They love 70⁰F but can do well in 60⁰F, but I wouldn't go over 75⁰F.

Am I out of this world if I think that you have a right to speak about plants that need a sales increase? I have no clue why people are talking about market manipulation… it’s basic MARKETING! Even if you do it… it’s absolutely normal and natural business step - new model of car - more advertising - so they are trying to increase sells. As a business owner I would be stupid to do not talk about my products … I am confused where this world is going to :) but anyway I really support you as a business woman. You are hard working young lady and just keep going. As part of British plant community I can see the jealousy toward you. WOMAN just fuck it :) haters will always stay haters

Yeah advertising isn’t market manipulation. Calling for a halt on sales of a specific plant is an unethical and illegal tactic in free market. It’s important that people understand that while “supply and demand” is the basic tenant of capitalism, it’s far from the only way it works. 🤔 Btw I just want to point out that I’m not in disagreement with you, I was just adding to the conversation. 😀

I feel like with Marantas they don't tend to get their full colouration until the leaf is fully grown. I also noticed when I divided and repotted mine (leuconeura) , it EVENTUALLY was happier and had bigger, bolder leaves. I know they're recommended to enjoy being a bit crowded, but that's just been my experience. Maybe yours was a little bit TOO crowded, so hopefully the repot will help :)

I feel like people who are shaming others for prices when the purchaser/seller is a business just have no idea or familiarity with running a business. You have to put a lot of money upfront and understand the long term investment and profit that will (hopefully) occur. Yeah, of course those prices are unaffordable for the standard houseplant enthusiast. There are so few of the plant-- why would they be at an affordable cost for a hobbyist? If anything, hobbyists should be excited about those exchanges bc it means that it's likely that more growers now have the plant and will start growing them and selling them, which means one day the prices will start to come down bc the supply will be up. And then you may have a chance of being able to afford one for your hobbyist plant collection! God, take a high school econ class, PLEASE. A bunch of uneducated pricks.

I have a friend that sells plants professionally. She puts alot of time and money into growing a specific rare plant. She sells for fair price in her sales and works fairly where she gives oppurtunity to everyone to buy one and if you already bought one you cant again except when she offers one in auction. In auction buyers send the price into crazy amounts in bidding wars and then tuen around and hammer her for the auction prices! I have literally seen people escalate the price so quickly in a frenzy that they bid against themselves! Yet she will still offer the plants out of auction at normal price. She just cant win with these people shes damned either way and it really makes me sad to see the community in this state

I totally agree with your noticing of the thickness of their roots and the correlation that that has with the water requirements. This appears to extend past aroids such as orchids, like cattleya, some phalaenopsis, angraecums and vandas with thick fleshy roots can handle under watering well and prefer to dry out quite a bit between watering and the ones with thin, fine roots like oncidiums, draculas and bulboyphullums like more moisture and like to stay moist
