Kazakhstan's Shoot-to-Kill Policy Makes Its President Stronger than Ever

No one has been watching the recent protests and violent crackdown in Kazakhstan closer than Vladimir Putin, president of regional superpower, Russia. More than 150 people were killed and 10,000 arrested after protests over the price of gas led to Kazakhstan's ruler ordering a shoot to kill policy on protesters. But the sudden instability in the former Soviet state may have surprised Putin, and given him reason to consider his own next moves.

for sure. Violence can be a tool for good or bad. Recently governments in places like this have been forcing citizens into violence to force change and then try to frame it as the protestors are "foreign agents" and that there is no reason for violence lol. It's been a pretty common play book here in the last 10ish years for revolutions around the world. Sometimes it works...sometimes it doesn't. Kazakhstan is way to close to Russias orbit of power for them to let a peoples revolution of democracy and freedom actually succeed. I feel bad for people who are super close to Russia and their power sphere. It makes improving your governmental situation next to impossible as Putin will just send in troops to save it's puppet regime.

What needs to happen is the military should have a coup and find someone who can support supply and war effort. People don't love their country enough to do so, however. Or it's simply too risky to even take such risks. In the military, you have to slowly plant that kind of seed and have all the military leaders agree to overturn the government. However, it's also very likely they have enough information to know how impossible it probably is. Somebody has to take the fall for it, it needs to cost the government and foreign powers greater than its worth to fight. I don't think a country like Kazakhstan has the capability of doing so. The only countries powerful enough are ones that have people who can afford to pay for it, like the U.S. That's why politics are so trivial in the US, if anyone took any rediculously drastic move, there would be too much at stake on both sides of the war that it wouldn't even be worth it.

Gas prices doubled in Kazakhstan. Exxon Mobil's stock went up 20%. Bitcoin dropped from 65K to 45K. Kazakhstan is the 2nd largest Bitcoin miner after the US. You can say whatever you want to say about the West encircling Russia and imposing sanctions against them, but two things are certain. No matter how many sanctions are imposed it will not deter Russia. And the only diplomacy the US / NATO Western alliance knows is military force.

In this case, i have to agree with Tokayev. He has done the right thing. The demonstrants wanted fuel price reduction, when it is given, they instead asked for presidential resignation. When it is declined, there were lootings and riots. Utter chaos and lawlessness. You might call this a coup. Law and order has to be kept, regardless if the public likes it or not. Everyone lives under the law. No matter how bad the president is, a coup is an illegal act. If you want him to step down, win the parliament, at least prompt an investigation. Use the legal political process, not rioting. Even in this case, you can't be breaking the law.

Perhaps your right, but there is much to consider when exploring the post Soviet space, especially the CA. Although the five stans have presidential bicameral or unicameral governments, these states have different methods for ruling. One could not judge unless the matter is researched. To go all wise with legal methods, there is much to achieve both in the nation and the government. The methods you're suggesting are not yet applicable in that region. The trouble is in elite ruling as one, where presidents of these States like to present themselves as Fathers of their nations, that lead to success and prosperity. Thus, (also considering that they like to rule for as long as possible) in most cases people blame them for everything. It won't work if they keep changing the president as they do in Kyrgyzstan, nor it will work when they keep one for long. All I'm saying is that there is a lack of administration, understanding between the government and people.

As native citizen of Almaty I was an eyewitness of these events. On the the second day, when our army and police were unable to regain control of the city, they just left us, some small groups barricaded in the buildings and tried to hold the siege. My apartment is in the center and it was hard to see how looters started to attack every shop on their way and steal. What they couldn’t carry on their hands were destroyed. On streets appeared a lot of armed people and they started to shoot. Me and my friend were under fire two times during these days and both times it was so called “protesters”. Imagine this feel of terror, when you call the police and you know that no one will respond on your calls, it was anarchy. Edit: If my words sounds like a propaganda to anyone, so let it be. I am tired of convincing others about what did I witness, but you can ask any questions and I will try to answer them. I wrote only what I saw with my own eyes. Everyday I was going out to feed my cat, take a photos and videos of what happening on the streets. It was unsafe and I would never recommend this. To be honest I wasn’t on the New Square, I am living on Arbat (it’s near so called Old Square among locals) and tried to protect few shops and a little grocery from looters, but it was futile. There was a lot of vehicles on a streets without registration plates full of protesters, some of them were armed and more people who took a part in looting or as I understood “patrolling” streets were armed too. A lot of them were hillbillies from the regions (we call them “mambets”), they weren’t natives of Almaty. On the other hand, not all of the protesters were armed, only some groups of them, as I mentioned above, but our local news says about “20,000 armed and trained terrorists”, which was a total lie. If such an army of armed protesters ever existed they could overthrow the government with ease. Western news says it was peaceful protesters and then started violence, local and Russians news says about “army of terrorists”, but the truth is somewhere in the middle. I wrote what me and my friends had to face those days.

Danggg.. my daughter’s gymnastic coach is from here. He was tough but fair. Very good at what he taught. The girls thought he was really hard on them. But he loved them enough to be tough because he knew they had what it takes to succeed in this extreme sport. Our team took first in state and many more firsts after that. I saw him trying not to cry watching them up on the podiums. Oh wow..my nephew’s wife is from Russia too, and they had their twins in Moscow then ASAP got them out. They are bilingual at 3. She said Russians truly fear Putin. The coach also said he had to get out, but wouldn’t talk much more beyond that. Her family are sweet and they may own their flats and have some kind of wealth, but they do without because Putin wants it that way. There’s no grocery stores or malls like we in America have. She was amazed at Target and Whole Foods. Sad..😔 Russian’s are not always mad or mean. She’s scared for her mom and dad back home. Putin loves they fear him. The people are good and they work hard. The stigmas about Russian’s are not true. Putin is evil incarnate. I fear for the people. 💔

People are being tortured, they hardly try to find so called "terrorists". The recent event that happened in the city of Shymkent, when our police is trying to dig up dead bodies out of graves in order to label them as terrorists is outraging and against all morals and law. I've come to the same conclusion, it's obvious tbh, putin was a major leader in the soviet Union, so it makes sense his morals haven't deviated just because the union "fell"

@@aaronsmith4940 um he never had position of power in the soviet union. He was a kgb paper pusher.. it wasn't until the 90s that he became the head of the fsb (kgb) of the russian federation.

Thanks for report, i hope u continue coverage of situation in Kazakhstan. As Kazakhstani i feel unrest about people detained and missing at this point and we need full investigation on what actually happened. Many hypothesis flow around, but there is no clear report and government media can be no trusted at this point in my opinion.

Cuz nobody know what happened including kazakhstani. This was a mess and those responsible for shootings shall be punished, at both government and non-government sides. We are told about terrorists, group of criminal, radical islamists controlled by Nazarbayev’s nephew, etc. perhaps it was all at once, but i truly believe that all across country protest was real, people are tired of autocracy, injustice and corruption, but now tons of killed, injured and detained and those who did that to people shall bear responsibility for their actions, including police and army

@@lisalessa8893 agree totally with the peaceful protests in the beginning, but weren't those people, that took weapons and started robbing people's businesses and even beheading police a pity criminals? They definitely are mambets from southern regions, and they were provoking so much in Almaty, that some people joined them. Or maybe they actually are trained terrorists from the Nazarbayev clan, nobody knows. The problem is that Almaty was damaged badly, other parts of our country, especially Zhanaozen and Aktau were really successful and peaceful, that's because people there know about protesting since 2011.
