Another great video! Like many others I lost my fescue lawn after an army worm invasion last summer. It started with small little white moths flying around on the ground. They would pop up after every step on the grass. Even though I put down sevin dust granules, the 13000 sq ft lawn was destroyed in about 72 hours. I live in hot humid Tennessee. Your videos have inspired me to transition to Bermuda. Seeds sure are expensive right now. 25 lbs is $140. And last week’s heavy rains wiped out most of my germinated Bermuda seedlings. I’ll keep pushing through and will eventually get there. Hoping last year was a freak occurrence. I think I read last years army worms came from a hurricane. Thanks for the content sir.

Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it. Good point about the moths. That's where it starts for sure. Sorry ya got hit so bad. That's fast! Glad I've been able to inspire you. Keep pushing for sure. I think you'll be glad you did when you've got a nice stand of bermuda turf. Yeah, last year's army worms seemed to get everyone. Let's hope it's different this. year. Really appreciate your comment! Thanks for watching.

Good reminder. North alabama ag and lawns was devastated by those things last year. They were pesticide tolerant, wild stuff to see my neighborhood lawns and ornamentals go from green to brown like dormancy in a couple days.

I’m going to check our lawn for these today. We have a lawn full of many different types of grass, clover, and “weeds” (plants with beautiful tiny colorful flowers and violet plants) that we love because it gives texture and a more natural feeling to our yard, but I’ve noticed the past few weeks we’ve got some large patches of grass that are fading to brown and thought (like you said) it’s just heat stress and lack of water (we have well water and don’t waste it on watering grass). I was looking up army worms since I’ve found them in the garden recently and didn’t realize they went for grass so thanks! Good info, though I don’t care much about the grass I just don’t want them in my garden lol.

Fingers crossed for sure! Last year I had them for the first time I think ever in my yard. Freaked me out bc they were def marching across and my yard looked terrible the rest of the season. I actually thought about putting up bird houses next year to try and keep birds around just in case.

It’s wild what they can do. Hope you don’t have to go through it again this year. I like the bird house idea! 💪💪 appreciate ya man!

My first choice is a good pesticide application.
@BudgetLawns2 жыл бұрын
Nothing wrong with that if it works for you. I just choose not to use pesticide or any bug killers because the lawn has a lot of good bugs in it that are actually helping it and not hurting. Thanks for watching and commenting.

I hadn't thought of many of the aspects that you brought up about keeping army worms away without using herbicides. Thankfully I have a lot of birds that hang out around my lawn. Great information 👍! My dad actually brought up what wasps do as far as getting rid of worms this past weekend, but we were talking about the gardening aspect. I like having a good vegetable garden.

Great topic! Christmas is exciting but armyworms...not so much! They ate my fescue by my drive in just two days last year. Started seeing them in the morning just crawling around the edges of the concrete after feasting. Will be on the lookout, this video was a great reminder!

Great info! Tough to tell here in Dallas what is checking out due to heat stress and what might be other damage. I tend to just water the front this time of year as the back is too much to pay for the water.

Great video Travis! Since army worm can really decimate cool season lawns badly I usually apply preventative applications. I've had small infestations before and once their in your lawn will go down fast. However to repair the damage a simple aeration/overseed will fix the damage if needed

Nailed it buddy. You cool season folks gotta be a little more cautious and prepared. Us Bermuda lawns have the beauty of quick self recovery. Appreciate ya bro!

Good video! I haven’t had any problems with army worms. The dynatraps capture the moths, mosquitoes ect. all night every night. Now chinch bugs ate a big section of my lawn last year. That area still hasn’t recovered. It never ends lol

Thanks bud. That's another great tip. Hadn't even thought about the dynatrap. I think my wife actually just ordered one. Sweet. 👊👊 You're right. Never ends. If it ain't one thing, it's another. Appreciate ya bro!

So this is an unrelated question to the video. But how would you install an underground irrigation line if you did a lawn renovation last fall and don't wanna tear it all up?
@BudgetLawns2 жыл бұрын
I don’t have an irrigation system but I’d imagine you don’t have a choice but to dig trenches. It makes a mess outta the lawn. I know that’s not what ya wanna hear. Thanks for watching.

We are looking at 104 temps twice this coming week. Is it a bad idea to start heavyish daily watering before that happens? I mow sometimes daily. My Bermuda is looking great but I don’t have much to take care of.
@BudgetLawns2 жыл бұрын
Brutal. Similar temps coming here this next week as well. It really comes down to how much you wanna fight the heat. I'm not one to do whatever it takes to beat it. I prefer to stick to my normal schedule and whatever happens, happens. This is record heat coming up for us. Temps we haven't seen in a decade or more. Sometimes ya just got to chalk it up as abnormal and let it ride. That's just my opinion though. We have some watering restrictions in place around our area. So I also try to do my best to not overuse water. Not to mention, I don't want a massive water bill. But you do you. Gotta do what makes it work for you. 👍👍

Great video! I haven’t had to deal with them yet, but I always have mole crickets and can’t seem to get ahead of them. Have you had any experience dealing with or advise? I do have birds that visit my yard daily, but I always have to put something down at least twice a year if not more. Respectfully, Kevin

@@BudgetLawns Thank you Sir for replying! Your videos and common sense approach are amazing! At the beginning of this spring I had about a 1000 square foot area of dirt. I frantically was trying to fix everything at once, and seemed to get nowhere. Your videos and information refocused me to just worry about the grass, and doing the basics. I now have about 200 square feet left to fill in. The yard has a long way to go yet, but I wouldn’t have gotten this far without your words of wisdom. Thank you! Respectfully, Kevin

You got any suggestions for fire ants
@BudgetLawns2 жыл бұрын
They're a pain from what I hear. I've never dealt with them so I don't have a good recommendation from experience. I would find something that specifically targets them. I leave regular ants in my lawn as they're actually good for the soil and help aerate. Fire ants are a different story, especially with kids in the lawn. Sorry I don't have more precise info than that. Thanks for watching.

Sorry not to change the subject but what about goose grass I have been battling this for the last 2 seasons. I try to lay down a pre emergent late fall and early spring along with a crabgrass preventer from a leading manufacturer. I constantly case my yard an dig out this nasty grass when I spot it. Any tips? Thanks Randy Hopper Cheney Ka.
@BudgetLawns2 жыл бұрын
I’ve had it in my lawn and didn’t do anything special or more than what you just mentioned. Pre emergent and pick what I see. The biggest factor I think in any weed control is simply mowing. Mow a lot. Promote a dense turf and the weeds will lose the battle. Mowing low with Bermuda really helps in my case. Appreciate ya watching. Hope this helps.
