I find that many aspiring KZbinrs fall into the trap of getting too caught up with having the right gear. I do too at times, but at the end of the day, don't let not having the perfect gear hold you back. And also don't let your gear interfere with the story. The story is more important than the gear you use. A turd filmed with a red epic is still a turd. A well put together story filmed with a potato cam will be more interesting any day of the week. I've always liked this video which shows Philip Bloom making a video with a barbie camera kzbin.info/www/bejne/b4e2ZHZnbZh6bsk

As a former pro-still shooter I’d like to agree with a previous statement here.... most pros will not share a lot of the technical behind the scenes info like Phil does. It took me a good while to learn things along the path of my career to set up because no one would share. It takes more to running a business than just being a good shooter and good business men know that and they aren’t intimidated by sharing on how to help us amateurs make better videos. Thanks Phil...

Thanks for putting this vid together bunch of good info. The chin mount is by far the best angle in my opinion, I even like it more than the chest gimbal angle, and so much easier and less to worry about than the gimbal setup. I want to experiment and try to find a similar angle to the chin mount using a Fox Dropframe helmet and mounting on the ear section of the helmet. Not sure how it will work out, but may potentially work decent... Would be nice to not have to wear a full face on easier trails.

Thanks for sharing. You have the best footage out there IMO. I have tried messing with "fuzzy stuff," but keeping it glued on is a huge hassle. A buddy of mine recently replaced his foam "Windslayer" cover with a mic cover from a Sure SM58 microphone that he had lying around. He just stretched it over the camera, and then cut a hole for the lens, and that way it covers all the holes in the foam wind cover. It's a slightly more dense foam as well. He just pushes the button down through the foam. I plan to try it and see if it makes a difference side by side with a standard foam cover . If you go to the Hero 8, with as good as it sounds wthout any cover, I'm guessing with just a foam windslayer, it's going to sound pretty good. I have yet to see anyone try the 8 chin mounted, but I don't know if it will impove anything. It might be slightly smoother, but I'm not sure that's going to help or hurt, because some motion helps it be more immersive. Your footage is already stable enough, with crisp audio, for me to watch all day as it is now.
@SkillsWithPhil5 жыл бұрын
I will be getting the Hero 8 whenever best buy or any local store around me has them in stock. I can say pretty confidently that I will not be using Hypersmooth high/boost unless I'm doing a follow-cam and the focus is on another rider. The hero 8 is appealing to me because of the form factor and new settings menu. Otherwise, I could go another year using the Hero 7 without any qualms.
@willbros14995 жыл бұрын
@@SkillsWithPhil ... That's kind of how I feel about it as well. I think the "high" setting for Hypersmooth will look better than "boost," with the chin mount, based on what I've seen online. Boost is too much, and I think I recall that it crops more as well. I hate how the menus are on the 7. I'm constantly pushing the wrong buttons by accident! I'm just going to continue to hope you and others don't put it on a chest mount. The body roll that a gimbal corrects for can't be corrected with Hypersmooth, and that makes me queasy after just a very short clip.

The first one was one with adhesive, so I cut it and glued it. i did test recording and it was awful. Turns out it had a rubber adhesive part, not just the fuzzy part. Found another, this time - a double sided tape. I've split it into fuzzy and hooky pieces, glued the fuzzy and boom - worked as advertised.

I've seen this video a loooong time ago and was gonna get the Proframe soon but have had another look and found the IXS Trigger FF. Very lightweight and you can stick one of those GoPro patches right on the bottom of the chin-part of the helmet. That is you don't need any zip ties to make it fit. This way you don't have to screw on the GoPro everytime you want to mount it on the chin but rather clip it in like you always do.

I will use to shoot my skiing, snowboarding, family and MTB adventures. Than, the main goal will be to upload the videos to KZbin (with no professional video editing). I'm thinking of using these settings: - 1080p 30fps; - superwide; - ISO 100-1600; - EV -0,5. Have two questions for you. First Should i go 60fps over the 30fps? Second I would like to know if there is any advantages on shooting in 2,7k instead of the 1080p (at least for my purposes). Oh, and at this moment, i don't have any dedicated 4k/2,7k TV or computer (still my old TV and computer with 1080p resolution 😁) Hope you get the time to help me out 😉 I also want to congratulate you for your channel and for your riding!!! Hi. Instant freedom, when you turned 'vignette' off! I have never used it as a means to focus the viewer's attention, but to remove the vignette caused by a not so good wide angle lens. In my opinion, the best shots in your videos are third person anyway, as your smooth moves over the bike are really wild to watch and the thing to learn from. The chin mounted cam makes you kink it down very steep, if you still want your handlebar sponsors to be visible. As with vignette above, I'd prefer to see the wide horizon, rather than the racer's tunnel vision. Maybe you can make two marks to align the cam mount to.

You're obviously using the stabilization capability in the Hero 7 Black. I'm curious when you abandoned your gimbal? Was that an immediate thing, or did you do so gradually? Also, I recall a video a while back that went over how you recorded sound. If I recall, at one point, you were using two GoPros (a Hero 4 and a Hero 5 or 6). I feel you when it comes to feeling like you're doing a production with all the gear. I don't use a full-face helmet, so I'll probably stick with the chest mount. But do you feel the Hero 7 (and now the Hero 8) offer better stabilization than a gimbal? Stay upright and keep the rubber side down. -Brian

That video that you're referring to is either one of the two below. I ditched that set up a long time ago as syncing the audio became a royal PITA. Half the time I would forget to press record/stop on one of the cameras and be left without and audio or video track. Also, there was two camera batteries that needed switching. The chin mount works for the kind of riding I do so I committed fully sometime last fall. I made the GoPro hero 7 reviews. @SkillsWithPhil5 жыл бұрын
The wind reduction sounds super processed and I can't stand it. I'd rather have some wind noise than use that setting.

I run mine in stereo mode with the wind cover and it gives alot better audio, but don't forget the windcover at home lol

Hey Phil, what do you think about the Hero 8 media mod? I don’t know whether to roll with the media mod or a hero 8 and a windscreen?

I too have a chin mount I haven't used it yet my thought is that it would add excess weight to the front of my helmet and make it uncomfortable and awkward to ride, did you experience that too when you 1st started using that mount and just get used to it?
@SkillsWithPhil5 жыл бұрын
Not to push the Fox RPC, but it's tighter than other helmets I've used in the past, and the chin bar is closer to my face. There's less Leverage pulling the front of the helmet down, and the helmet doesn't move as much since it's tight. On my older helmets, I did notice that quite a bit. Googles helped keep the front from falling

Great MTB skills 👍 Why 4K 30fps? Bikes go fast, wouldn’t you benefit from 60fps?

What's the best way to chinmount to a fox proframe?

Youve just got a sub out of me from this video!!! I do have 1 question, I myself am going to start mountain biking so im going to do the whole gopro thing. I notice some peoples gopro mtb vids start to get fuzzy(video quality) when they ride faster, or even in this video @ 5:29 is this common and why does it do that? or is it because im not watching this video on a computer?

That comes down the video bit rate and video compression. This is most often due to KZbin's compression. Even if you record videos in 1080p, it's worth upscaling that video to 4k. You're not going to magically enhance 1080 footage into 4k CSI style, but you will get a higher bit rate which is what you want. Here's some helpful information on this subject (definitely worth learning about) #1 kzbin.info/www/bejne/qGe1oWCrpJt7o6s #2 kzbin.info/www/bejne/p5OqgnWKZ7uqrMU #3 kzbin.info/www/bejne/anStp5Spjq-DbNE Cheers!

Looks like wind cover + fuzzy stuff makes you go into lightning speed aswell 😲
